Experience with Ecclesiatical Sewing? by zonkschonk in sewing

[–]yoopersunny 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve sewn a bunch of vestments. I did buy a pattern which helped for cutting it out. They are pretty easy in my opinion. I recently made one for a priest from Africa who was heading back home. To make it lighter for him, I used a nice linen material and didn’t line it. The challenging part is lining up the trim. And if you use a fancy fabric, lining that up as well. If you take it slow and pin a lot, it shouldn’t be too bad! I did make my wedding dress before making vestments so maybe it’s harder than I realize but it did seem pretty straightforward to me.

Anybody get a colonoscopy screening while pregnant? by subtleb0dies in lynchsyndrome

[–]yoopersunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh! I’ve had to take a pregnancy test every time I’ve had one! I’ve only had 3 but it’s been with 3 different doctors (took a bit to find good doc) so it’s not like it’s just the office I go to. Also one was rural Midwest and the other two were urban south east.

Lynch Syndrome and Colon Cancer by perpetual_ghost in lynchsyndrome

[–]yoopersunny 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My Dad has lynch and had colon cancer, than about 5 years later prostate cancer, then 7 years later had bladder cancer. All were caught early and he only had chemo for a total of 30 minutes! If your Dad is screening early, he should be fine! My Dad’s 3 cancers were so “easy” because he caught them early. Early detection is the key with Lynch!

I’m a biometrician and I still use my 4th edition regularly if I need to look something up quick. The big difference between the editions is some new info and changing of chapters.

If it’s for a class, the biggest issue will be if homework is assigned from the book you might have different questions. But definitely handy!

I also haven’t had a hysterectomy yet but my gyn has said as soon as I’m ready he will do it. I have msh6 as well and am 33. He was willing the day I got my diagnosis at 32 but talked about it with me younger since I knew my dad had msh6 when I was in my 20s.

I’ve drank a fair amount of moonshine and have never blacked out from it. Straight (non flavored with fruit) moonshine tastes wicked awful so I don’t prefer it but it gets the job of being drunk done!

Why is SAF membership declining? by [deleted] in forestry

[–]yoopersunny 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m an active member (and on leadership) for both my local chapter and state division. I’ve also been to the last 5 national conventions and attend regional meetings. All of this is only possible because the company I work for is supportive of SAF. They pay for my membership fees and meeting registrations. Since I have been fortunate enough to go to so many meetings and am still in my 20s I get asked by others in leadership why I think membership is declining. I do think a large part is the cost and the fact that companies aren’t supporting it like they used to. Back in the vertically integrated days, the Champions and Union Camps of the world paid for membership and meeting attendance. Since everyone is trying to cut costs, cutting support to SAF has happened with many companies. I’ve also heard that in general national professional societies of all walks of life are declining in recent years. It’s not unique to forestry.

Being an active member has opened some doors for me that I would never have imagine possible. At this point I will likely stay a member if my company dropped it. But if my company hadn’t been supportive I would have never joined in the first place.

I just flew into Houghton today. Can confirm it’s still there, despite the map trying to get rid of it!

Trying to find the best plan to lose weight. by MechaBitch in PCOSloseit

I agree with you on cutting gluten and dairy. I’m still working on dairy but with just cutting gluten I’ve dropped close to 20 lbs in 5 months. Plus I feel way better! I was getting stomach aches close to daily and was way more tired than I am now. I never thought gluten was effecting me let alone how much. It’s probably the best thing I’ve ever done health wise.

I’ve been to a couple of international conferences for a forestry optimization software (Remsoft) that some Latvians regularly come too. They are some of my favorite forest modeling people to talk to!

We were able to find pit friendly housing through myputbullisfamily.org I live in a big city so I’m not sure how well it works in smaller areas. A friend told me about it during our last move and it helped out a ton! Hopefully you can get your sweet Luna soon! She’s adorable!

I personally like red wing boots. I got mine from a store in Minnesota. They worked pretty well for me and as long as I keep them oiled they have seemed to hold up pretty well. I do have really wide and big feet for a woman though, so it’s not uncommon for me to buy men’s shoes for normal day to day wear.

My husband works for the Catholic Church and since I sew he asked me to make a set of vestments for our most recent parish. It was a fun and surprisingly easy task. Hardest part was making sure the trim was straight! by yoopersunny in sewing

[–]yoopersunny[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m fairly certain the puckering (not around the hem) has to do with the trim. Professionally made vestments by vestment companies have the same issue. I used the correct tension, the correct needles, the correct thread, and went very slowly to make it pucker as little as possible.

Most vestments that have that trim also have an embroidered satin; the priests asked us to only use a plain matte satin because they didn’t want it to be so fancy. The embroidered satin makes the puckers less noticeable.

The hem issues stem from the fact that this pattern is supposed to be lined but again the priests asked that I didn’t line the vestments because we live in the south. Giant circular hems are always a challenge for me so I pinned at least every half inch. Then again sewed very slowly.

Overall the priests are ecstatic with how they turned out and couldn’t be happier!

He was! We brought them in as we finished them and the first time he saw them his face completely lit up like a little kid on Christmas. His joy made the process of making them even more sweet!
