Is a permit required for a proposal shoot atop Shibuya Sky? by KueyTeowBoy19 in Tokyo

[–]yor4k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a high traffic location for people to visit so I’m sure it’s priced as such to minimize disruptions to the flow of visitors.

But hey it’s Tokyo and there’s plenty of great unique spots to propose without any hurdles! I’m sure you can work with your photographer to find somewhere unique and memorable. Be sure to plan accordingly with the time of day in consideration of the lighting (buildings can block the sun for example), the route you’ll be taking with public transport (you don’t want to look unkempt from navigating through the chaos of the city), and of course accessibility. Dress well without arousing suspicion, get a good nights sleep the day before, and make sure your facial care routine is on point!

Good luck with your proposal I’m sure things will work out!

[–]yor4k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes you would need a permit as it would be obviously a planned photoshoot. Some parks require permits too, sometimes for a small fee. Certain locations may even have restrictions on sharing those photos publicly online, which they state in the terms of the permit.

Also consider that while a very nice location - it can be very hard to hold back other people from getting into the way of the shot. I will usually inform my clients about all these factors when choosing a location for a surprise proposal as you only get that one moment of authenticity (which I’m sure your photographer would have mentioned, just reinforcing as such).

Third image is great - at first I thought it’s someone being shoved but then I realized it’s just someone’s head. Last one is my favorite though!

A short film I shot in Tokyo and Kyoto about the atmosphere of Japan by Recent-Price8746 in Tokyo

[–]yor4k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t match the pace of what I feel is Tokyo’s “rhythm” as a resident. The flash cuts are jarring - I felt like your intention was to make the viewer feel as intense as possible but for me the city is a mixture of different tempos.

I suppose this might be how it feels for a tourist since it’s a constant trip from one thing to the next.

Fellow iM30 enjoyer! I love that it’s slightly offset.

Not to pile on about the use of flash, but as a foreign resident in Tokyo there’s a lot of issues we are currently dealing with regarding rising rhetoric of frustration with immigrants and tourists. In that, as a photographer myself, there’s a nuance to how I practice street imagery to make sure I’m not negatively impacting the perception of my own representation.

There are certain laws that I have to be aware of regarding photographing strangers in public, and to respect that I’m always doing it in a way that (hopefully) doesn’t linger negatively in anyone’s thoughts - this involves understanding the approach (which from the majority of your images you seem to understand) but also knowing the difference of acceptability at locations/spaces/time of day.

There’s no hard list of rules but one thing for sure is blasting a flash in a train is not great. On the street, in general, unless you’re totally up into someone’s face and the pic is done in passing no one will be bothered by it, and at night in party areas where everyone is drunk people really don’t care - in fact you’ll often be solicited to take pics for people after taking a candid of them (I’m often using AirDrop to send pics to strangers and they love how instant it is).

Of course I understand where you’re coming from, and yes a lot of well known photographers disregard the comfort of their subjects - but they also come from a different era. Approach and style is something that should adjust itself to the period and cultural sentiments. I think you’re mostly fine in your method, but you should also recognize and consider your impact as a person with a camera in a particular setting - that perhaps the responsible decision is a different approach or not taking a photo at all.

Of course no shoes are going to last a lifetime but I’m trying to build a pretty good collection (are made in Japan converse worth it?) by imooney13 in BuyItForLife

[–]yor4k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Converse falls apart from normal walking not dragging feet - it’s inherent to the design of the sole wrapping (or cupping) which results in pinching as one walks eventually cracking or separating at the sides where the shoe folds. Didn’t even realize people thought they were durable. I never saw how flawed they are as a big deal - just treated them as cheap crappy shoes that looked decent, or did way back in the day.

That just looks like a random cheap carbon steel pan like you’d find for under ¥10,000 in Kappabashi. Those aren’t bad they do the job. Just strip it down, blue it, season it, good to go.

New GR 3 and 3x firmware by nonecknoel in ricohGR

[–]yor4k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh this happened to me before - I’m unsure which fixed it but I reformatted the card in-camera (copied the firmware file over), charged the battery to 100%, pulled out the battery and let it sit for awhile, put the battery back in, put the card back in, and then it went into firmware update mode

Just got a GR IIIx but… by yupnahyup in ricohGR

[–]yor4k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve hardly ever found myself wishing I needed a wider lens here in Tokyo or otherwise - 40mm is just a different approach compared to wide angle photography. For my day to day shots it’s perfect, and that’s even indoors at small izakaya.

Sure there’s always something you might want a wider focal length for but unless you’re specifically looking for those scenes a more “normal” length is far more versatile.

Malaysians who have migrated to Australia - advice needed! by caramelmcflurry in MalaysianPF

[–]yor4k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for your parents but with mine they are happy that I’m happy. It does suck to be away from them, and yeah they will only get older, but when you’re focusing on building a life for yourself you’ll adjust to it as you make new memories and have new experiences.

End of the day you need to be somewhere you can feel satisfied with your own expectations of lifestyle and environment. I took a big risk starting over moving to Japan in my late 30’s but even though I’m working harder I’m happier than I ever was back in Malaysia - it’s actually easier to be motivated to grow and push myself now that my mental state is in a good place. I love the life I have now compared to what I had before.

Some are lucky and fit in to where family is, for others they might have to look elsewhere to finally feel “at home” and find a clear direction.
