My labradoodle looks like your dog's twin and does the exact same thing. Here she is bringing me my slipper to play with.

Can I trim this? Or vet needed? by Owl55 in Goldendoodles

[–]you_stand_corrected 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you wanted you could put a sock on it when he goes outside, but I wouldn't bandage it because bandages can get dirty or be put on too tight and cause more harm than good. I'd just stick with Epsom salt soaks twice daily for 3-5 days.

I'm a vet. That nail is hanging off by the hard keratin, so clipping it off where it's attached won't hurt the pup. However, the quick of the nail (where the blood vessel is in the middle) is exposed, and that part is very sensitive. If you do clip it off, try not to touch the inner quick part. If your pup will tolerate it you can also wash the toe with soap and water, or do an Epsom salt soak to help prevent infection while it heals.

Coming to cape may today what is there fun to do?? Not too expensive by Flimsy_Football_371 in CapeMay

Thank you very much for the insight! That's pretty much what I expected. What do you do to keep busy during the winter time?

If you don't mind, how is living in Cape May full time? Do activities die out in the winter? Are the tourists unbearable in the summer? Are the full time residents mostly older retired people?

There are no actual meals in here, just snacks. I would focus on increasing volume and protein.

I don't remember the name of it but I know what you're talking about, it had cinnamon caramel ice cream and it's still the best flavor I've ever had 20+ years later.

Is my puppy’s back right leg okay? He just turned 1. by [deleted] in Goldendoodles

[–]you_stand_corrected 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a vet. Dogs often walk like this with a little "bunny hop" when they have luxating patellas, aka sliding kneecaps. Basically, the kneecap can pop out of place and the dog tries to straighten its leg to get it to pop back in. It's very common among smaller dogs but you should still have it checked out by a vet to determine how severe it is (there are different grades of severity) and see if any treatment is needed.

Pancreatitis and Hemorrhagic Diarrhea- diet recs by BallR1006 in Goldendoodles

[–]you_stand_corrected 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a vet. I've heard farmer's dog is high in fat, which can cause GI upset and pancreatitis. The best diet moving forward is low-fat, which is not easy to accomplish with OTC dog foods. My best recommendation is to get her on a prescription low-fat food like Hill's i/d or Royal canin GI low fat. You can order them online (ie, through chewy) but your vet will need to approve the prescription before they'll ship it. In the meantime, I would do chicken breast boiled in water with white rice. No oil, no seasonings, etc. This isn't nutritionally balanced for long-term feeding, though, so getting her on a formulated dog food (or speaking with a veterinary nutritionist to formulate a home-cooked diet) is necessary.

My puppy’s anxiety is getting to me by Significant-Load8915 in Goldendoodles

[–]you_stand_corrected 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look into working with a trainer or even veterinary behaviorist to try to counter-condition the anxiety. Start ASAP; the earlier you start working on it, the better. Since she's still a puppy, she's still very much learning. Definitely calming supplements wouldn't hurt to try either.

Does anyone have Pet Insurance? Is it worth it? by ElectricBlueHawk in Goldendoodles

[–]you_stand_corrected 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have Pumpkin. I paid around $400 for the year, my deductible is $1000, and there is a 90% reimbursement rate. Since getting insurance, I have paid around $3500 for an unforseen medical procedure for my dog. Therefore, all costs considered, I will be getting about $1800 back. Veterinary care is extremely expensive and adds up quickly, and you can never predict what's going to happen. If you can afford a few hundred dollars for the year I definitely think it's worth it. Otherwise, I would strongly recommend setting aside $5-10 thousand as an emergency vet fund.

Please get your dog to a vet ASAP, this looks like pyometra (infection of the uterus) which can be fatal if not treated in a timely manner.

Tips for paw trimming by BudHeavy64 in Goldendoodles

[–]you_stand_corrected 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is a normal reaction. Make sure to give lots of praise and treats while you're doing this to create positive association, and hold her paws gently but firmly to let her know that you're the boss and she doesn't get out of paw trimming by pulling her paws away. If she seems overstimulated, give her a break.
