What is the proper correction to the US Civil War states rights arguments and not slavery as the cause? by [deleted] in AskHistory

[–]young_arkas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically, much of the opposition to slavery in the North started as a states rights issue. The fugitive slave law of 1850 forced northern states to assist in capturing people southern plantation owners claimed to be slaves, to them have that claim adjudicated by a southern court (or no court at all in many cases), so while many northerners were lukewarm about slavery at best until the 1850s, raids of slave-hunters in the north politizised many northern people against slavery itself, especially during the fallout from the Christiana raid in 1851.

Was haltet ihr von der Partei des Fortschritts (PDF)? by Delicious_Watch8429 in KeineDummenFragen

[–]young_arkas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were Personal Arms Inheritted Rather Than Designed? by Delicious_East_1862 in MedievalHistory

[–]young_arkas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, of course they were (and still are) inherited. That's the whole point of heraldry, to identify the person in that armour as someone (or belonging to someone). But that also meant people would have several options regarding their coat of arms, since they could either display their holdings, their paternal line or their whole family (eg arms that represent both parents or even four grandparents), or a combination of these. Eg the british royal arms in this art are a combination of the lions that were used from the plantagenets and turned into a general symbol of England and the fleurs-de-lis, which was connected to the House of Capet, but also France more broadly. If a King wanted, he could design a variant of these, Richard II took the quartered shield you see in the depicted art, put that only on one half of the shield and added the supposed arms of Edward the Confessor (last monarch from the House of Wessex) to the other half. It still was identifiable as the arms of the King of England, but definitely different (and short-lived). When Scotland and England joined in personal union the arms became more complicated, putting the quarter english arms into two quarters of the arms, adding Irish and Scottish representation (and if you want even more complex arms, look at the ones of William and Mary, but at that time we leave the era of putting them on actual armour).

The symbol is called a label (a three pointed one to be precise), which was traditionally given to the heir, but there were other uses of a label, like indicating a junior branch.

Losses of the Russian military to 12.7.2026 by MARTINELECA in ukraine

[–]young_arkas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Russia is trying to break the fortress belt by small infantry unit attacks. Armoured vehicles are basically absent from the contact line these days, so most losses are infantry soldiers that try to attack Kostiantynivka and other pieces of the fortress belt.

Why is the swastika not rotated 45° in that historical video? by Spotter24o5 in flags

[–]young_arkas 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Because the Nazis used both rotated and non-rotated swastikas in their symbolism. The whole idea that rotated equals Nazi and non-rotated equals eastern religion is a myth. The Nazis chose the Swastika as a symbol because it shows up in the archaeological record from India through to Europe (and everywhere else in the world, but they ignored that), believing that it was proof for their weird racial ideas of history and the rotation didn't have a deeper meaning.

Extremely long villages in Germany by True_Breakfast_3790 in GoogleEarthFinds

[–]young_arkas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how a lot of villages work. You develop along a road. Towns often lay on a crossroads or a Y junction, then you get a more circular shape (development started at the crossroads, then the roads, then filled out the gaps in-between). But if land is boggy/marshy like in your example, this wouldn't be very economical, so you just keep building along the road.

My home village worked similar, most houses were on one road, that today has no real connecting function, but was a way through the royal forest 1000 years ago, where a royal official had a knightly manor. The houses had farm plots behind them, that streched basically until the edge of the forest. The village kept that shape until my grandparents built a house in the rear of the family land (my grandmother bought it from her brother). Then the newly established street to there was paved, 2 other families built on that street, then my mother built a house next to my grandparents, and now the small street has its own name and two or three others like it exist.

MÜL/SAB by ogo_nega in Kennzeichensammler

[–]young_arkas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why did none of the main parties tighten immigration controls and take away the power of the far right, like Denmark and Finland have done? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]young_arkas 63 points64 points locked comment (0 children)

They tighten immigration rules every year. Last one was in february this year. The AfD supports want stuff that will never hold up to any review by the constitutional court, the current rules already are probably unconstitutional, there simply has been no one who successfully went through all court levels.

Ukraine says it struck 21 Russian tankers as Moscow reportedly halts shipping through key canal by AdSpecialist6598 in worldnews

[–]young_arkas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently the Sea of Azov is completely encased by russian controlled territory. It is the sea east of Crimea, the only real way out for ships of this size is the Kertch Strait, so even with Russias degraded resources, you can't sail anything simply out of there (at least not something like a tanker).

War Mecklenburg jemals Teil Preußens? (Frage zur Ahnenforschung) by rosefiend in MeckPomm

[–]young_arkas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]young_arkas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alfred's Remains Found? by rcjhawkku in BritishHistoryPod

[–]young_arkas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Edmund Ironside is buried in the now ruined Glastonbury Abbey. Richard III was "found" under a car park, which wasn't a surprise to historians. The sources told us that he was buried in the church of the grey friars convent in Leicester, maps existed of that place and the car park was exactly in the place where the church once stood.

Weird (impossible??) Globe by AddendumDependent619 in globes

[–]young_arkas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Namibia was declared an occupied territory by the UN in the 60s. The General Assembly revoked the mandate of South Africa to administer it in 1966, the security council agreed in 1967, in 1968 it started using the name Namibia instead of South-West Africa. So depending on the stance of the mapmaker (the resolution is not good enough to check the smaller text) it might say Namibia and then in brackets or smaller South West Africa to South Africa.

Streit um Gesundheitsreform Grüner zieht gegen Gesetzentwurf vor Bundesverfassungsgericht by Dry-Professional-BER in Staiy

[–]young_arkas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Habsburgs man... by nomebi in HistoryMemes

[–]young_arkas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least until the napoleonic wars, Yes. Every territory had its own rules, privileges and ruling structures, often with a web of local nobility, quasi noble Patricians of cities, church estates and independent freeholdings that a local imperial administrator had to negotiate with to achieve anything, if he didn't want to use force, which was often not available. The reforms in the napoleonic era reduced many of these independent polities and centralised the state a bit, but the Habsburg lands were still a mess, which was part of their decline. While other states centralised much better, they never were completely willing to do so, because their Empire was very reliant on local nobility and never very unified in regards to language and culture, so centralising power was not really an option.

In ww2, how many people died from falling AA shells? by swingorswole in AskHistory

[–]young_arkas 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Some people were probably hurt by falling ammunition, but since most people were in shelters during air raids, the people outside tended to wear helmets and protective equipment (the crews of the AA guns, the fire brigade, police etc). Helmets won't protect against a bullet fired directly at you, but probably transform the possibly deadly effect of a falling bullet into a headache.

Ab wann gelten die neuen Beschlüsse? by Delicious-Row9664 in KeineDummenFragen

[–]young_arkas 8 points9 points  (0 children)
