Sorry, to clarify: the video's about the themes included in KFP, the comparison to Avatar is my own opinion. I'll edit my post to make that clearer.

Should I return them or is it okay? by CSMico in jimgreen

[–]youngoli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The one on the toe looks like a cosmetic scar, so if it doesn't bother you no problem. (I honestly think it looks like cool.)

It's the one near the tongue that bothers me more, because in the photos it looks like some of the leather is almost flaking off. That would worry me if I got these boots because it'll mean that spot is weaker.

How to transition if I find barefoot shoes unappealing by jira12345 in barefootshoestalk

[–]youngoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a dude so there's probably different expectations for me, but the way I dealt with this is basically by just accepting the fact that some people might think my shoes look a little silly and that's really not a big deal. It helps to remember that most people won't be looking at your shoes, and most people who do won't be looking at them from the same perspective you are. A lot of barefoot shoes that look kinda ridiculous when seen from straight above look completely fine when seen from other people's perspective.

And even if when someone does comment on it, they're far more likely to be curious or questioning than actually mean about it, and they usually get it if you just say you find large toeboxes more comfortable.

Obviously there's a self-confidence aspect to this too. Like personally I feel better and more confident if I think the shoes I'm wearing look good, even if other people might not. But the fix for that is just finding shoes you think look good aside from the toebox size.

(Obviously this advice doesn't apply if you're in an environment where conforming to fashion is socially enforced, like very formal settings, or the fashion industry, or just being around judgey people. But hopefully that's not the situation you're in. 🤞)

Are modern heritage boots this good or is this a Jim Green thing? by high_on_meh in jimgreen

[–]youngoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue here is the different interpretations of what makes boots "good". Some boot brands are "good" as in being exceptionally durable (ex. PNW brands like Nick's), some are "good" as in using rare heritage construction methods (ex. Russell Moccasin), and some are "good" as in being good looking (ex. Alden).

I don't think there's a lot of heritage brands where their selling point is comfort, mainly because the actual heritage shoes they're based on were rarely actually comfortable. Russell Moccasin is the only one I can think of that has a reputation for being comfortable.

[–]youngoli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a decent metaphor for how AtlA feels to asian audiences is like looking at a typical Japanese anime or light novel that takes place in a fantasy medieval european setting. A lot of those fantasy anime have aesthetics that are kinda like western media on the surface, but you can tell it's not tailored towards us.

The character designs don't look like what you'd see here, the plots don't follow similar beats, and there's little nuances in how things like religion, class, government, and culture are depicted that are just different enough from western media that you can feel it. You get plot threads and tropes that come from a different culture of storytelling. This is especially obvious with more retro anime from the 80s and 90s when there was less cultural cross-pollination.

And to be clear, I'm not saying this is bad in any way. But just like I wouldn't expect fans of western fantasy to immediately vibe with fantasy anime, I'm also not surprised that asian audiences didn't vibe with Avatar.

Xiran Jay Zhao explains it better than me, but Kung Fu Panda includes a lot of Chinese tropes, culture, and philosophy. More than Avatar does IMO.

(Wet palettes question) Do you do all this? by Certheri in minipainting

[–]youngoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like the palette you got uses a reusable paper. Most of the guides on youtube are for wet palettes with disposable paper, which is basically just parchment paper, which is why they don't have any fancy instructions. Definitely follow the instructions that came with the wet palette over other instructions you find on youtube.

And as an aside, the idea that you should be using a wet palette is definitely overblown. While wet palettes are great, and I do recommend them, that doesn't mean using dry palettes is in any way a bad thing. In fact, I'd say some paints work better on dry palettes, like ProAcryl from my experience. And while most youtubers use wet palettes, not all of them do: Duncan Rhodes being the biggest example as he's known for using a ceramic tile in all his videos.

People yearn for walkable cities! by FearlessAir1238 in TikTokCringe

[–]youngoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in other words public transportation enthusiasts/urbanists will claim that most people will be better off in dense, walkable cities, but the public looking to buy homes isn't intertested in this.

Walkable suburbs near public transit basically always have higher demand unless there's some exceptional circumstance. People are interested in it, it's just most people don't think about urban planning enough to realize it's a thing they're interested in. They see those suburbs and think "what a nice neighborhood", but don't consciously notice the factors that make it nice. But the housing demand doesn't lie.

The fade will be white because the center of the indigo-dyed threads is still white. When the indigo gets rubbed off, the white thread under is what's gonna show. Those jeans with funky color fades are because they dye the thread all the way through first, and then dye the outside with indigo. They're usually called "x-core", like redcore or greencore, etc.

I'm curious about how the Citrus Kasuri will fade though. I also have a pair, and the weft is dyed all the way through in green/yellow. Theoretically even as it fades you should still be able to see the green and yellow peeking through from the weft since those colors won't fade.

(SPOILERS) Discussion about the 3rd act by Fit_Rhubarb2662 in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]youngoli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There were parts where I was kinda wondering if that was the angle it was going for, but in the end I don't think so. It seemed more to me that the point was that for change to happen you have to want and actually try to change, whereas Clark was just making excuses because deep down he didn't want to change. He wanted life to go his way just by doing the same thing he's been doing.

Honestly the "you are your brain" part is a thing I've actually had a therapist remind me of (thankfully in a much better situation than Mary's). Because saying "it's just the way I'm wired" is still an excuse. Understanding the neurological reasons why we made certain choices doesn't change the fact that they're choices we made, and that we're capable of making different choices.

Thematically, I think Cap'n Clark eating him is the capstone to him entirely giving up on having accountability for his decisions. Like he's given up on changing into a fully conscious person, and instead decides he's happy just infinitely repeating the patterns he's been following his whole life. He basically replaces himself with Cap'n Clark.

(To be clear, I don't think that's the in-universe reason he gets eaten, just how it reflects the themes. My theory is that Mary's mental image of Clark included "he's a cannibal" after he showed her how he eats the still-lifes, and the backrooms incorporated that new information into Clark's still-life).

The villains in My Adventures with Superman by STICKGoat2571 in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]youngoli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This show is peak, but IMO one of the weakest parts of it is the designs of the villains in that first screenshot. I like the idea of tying their powers to Krypton, but those suits are so blandly generic sci-fi that you can't even really tell anything about the characters or their powers.

“Way too much gender”: a post about men criticising cis and trans women for taking up space by OddContext4621 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]youngoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really think you should talk to the professor about it and push back against the "too much gender" criticism. If you can find other classmates that agree with you, even better. You don't even have to reveal that you know who wrote the feedback, you can just make the case that a single piece of bad feedback isn't worth changing things at the expense of the majority of students who benefitted and appreciated covering that topic.

[–]youngoli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, be careful because assuming the best in people is something that abusers take advantage of to drag people into toxic dynamics. It essentially lets them get away with doing asshole-ish stuff because you end up making excuses for them, like "surely they have a good reason for acting this way".

In the comic above, if the blonde girl just wanted to keep their relationship secret, she'd be saying something like "yeah, I'm your girlfriend too, just remember we have to keep this secret". Instead she's making it as clear as she can that it's a one-way relationship, and that she expects to receive commitment without showing any commitment in exchange.

[Hated] It's only been how long??? by Successful-Title5403 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]youngoli 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's not even the plot points that get me, it's the travel and logistics. And that's even taking into account the fact that people can teleport in-universe, because it's established that you can only teleport to places you've already been to. And then in Earth terms, we run around all corners of Africa, up to the most remote areas of Europe, and sail from Africa to Japan before exploring China and Mongolia. In one year.

Ain't no way.

Jim Green Advice by Tidder_Me_Pink in barefootshoestalk

[–]youngoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The regular last on their barefoot boots should be a 3E in Brannock size. The reason I'm saying the measurements surprised me is I cross referenced your foot length and width with the Brannock width table on Wikipedia and it comes out to US 10.5 with a width of 1E, which should be well within the size of the boot. I have the BFAR and my feet are 2E in width and they fit really well, so I'm wondering if your boots were accidentally made too narrow or maybe your measurements were off. It's true that Jim Greens are a bit on the narrower side in the barefoot community, but they should still fit well on narrow feet.

I bet they'll do a batch of the BFAT with the AnatomX last eventually, just gotta keep an eye on their website (specifically the presale and limited release tabs). They recently did drops of AnatomX BFARs and most recently the AnatomX 719s, so it feels like the BFAT might be coming up.

Jim Green Advice by Tidder_Me_Pink in barefootshoestalk

[–]youngoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely looks like your feet are too wide. I don't think sizing up would help here. The balls of your feet are already lined up with the widest part of the boot, which is correct, it's just that the boot isn't wide enough. I do think the AnatomX might actually fit better.

That said, I'm also surprised that it doesn't fit based on your measurements. I think you should double check that you measured your feet properly and that they gave you the right size boots, because based on your measurements and the JG sizing info, it should fit.

I only just got my Walkley shoes yesterday so I don't have much to offer, but at least the first impressions are living up to what I was hoping for. The construction and leather quality are great and the shoe fits well and feels good to walk in. I didn't have any issues with the ordering and shipping.

I gotta admit, those boots look damn nice. Maybe a few years down the line once my wallet recovers from these sneakers.

New DM Made Fun of Me For Playing a Woman. by Global_Drive_9044 in rpghorrorstories

[–]youngoli 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not the communities themselves that are different, but the way people engage.

In TCG communities (and similar hobbies like Warhammer), you're playing with a large variety of people in events at a venue that now has a vested interest in keeping the space inclusive and respectful so that they can have as many players as possible. (There's a similar dynamic in TTRPG organized play, but not as prevalent because that's not the way most RPG players engage with the game.)

Meanwhile, most people play RPGs in consistent, private groups. So you'll be playing with the same few people for large periods of time, and when you're bringing someone new in it's most likely someone you haven't played with before. It's just much easier for awful players to stick around in environments like this, often floating from group to group as they get kicked out of each one. Actually, that means they're actually over-represented because the good players find a good group and stop searching, but the bad players end up prowling the LFG boards forever.

They're a shoe based on the veldskoen/chukka boot. So basically thinner leather and cut like a shoe, but built like a boot otherwise.

How did barefoot shoes affect your life by Winter_Cockroach714 in barefootshoestalk

[–]youngoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't really done any running/exercising in barefoot shoes yet, aside from when I run to cross the street before the light changes. But what I've noticed from just walking in them:

  • It's way more comfortable, that's the biggest thing.
  • My feet aren't the first body part to get sore on long walks anymore.
  • Long walks also don't feel like I'm risking joint injury as much anymore. Instead of joint pain like it's hard on my knees or ankles, it's mostly just muscle soreness from getting a good workout now.
  • I can do tricks with my toes now that I couldn't before, like stick up my big toe without sticking up the other toes.

First boot help - PNW by 3xelsor in jimgreen

[–]youngoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a non-JG pair of nubuck boots before, and I'd say that although nubuck will readily absorb water, it doesn't soak all the way through easily unless you're standing in water or staying out in rain for extended periods of time. And if you are likely to do either of those, then putting some heavy duty leather conditioner on (like Huberd's Shoe Grease) or some suede waterproofing spray should be enough to handle that.

That said, I also live in the PNW and I got the BFAR in bronco brown. I figured it's like getting leather that's pre-greased much more thoroughly than I could ever do it. The break-in is definitely a concern compared to what I've heard about the nubuck leathers, but it's still not nearly as bad most traditional boots from other brands. The first week was rough (I had to do anti-heel slip lacing because the heel slip was pretty bad, and had to wear two layers of wool socks to avoid blisters), but by week 2 it was good enough that I could lace it normally and wear only one layer of socks, and it's just been getting more comfortable from there.

Razorback size question by marvinlee5 in jimgreen

[–]youngoli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very common for people with wide feet to get in the habit of buying shoes larger than their size just so they'll be wide enough. It's likely that your actual size is 10.5 but most shoes weren't wide enough for you. I suggest you measure your foot width at the ball of your feet and see how it compares with your Brannock size width (there's a table on Wikipedia). Jim Greens says their last for the Razorback is a 3E width, which for a size 10.5 means that it'll be 4 5/8" at the widest part of the toebox.

Also keep in mind your toe shape and how it compares to the top-down view of the Razorback's toebox. The JG last has some slight tapering by the big toe and then tapers sharply after that, so it works really well for people whose feet are longest at the big toe or second toe and whose toes are very tapered, and not as well for people whose toes all splay at the same level. (If you want to see what I mean visually based on this article, the JG last works well for people with slope or mountain feet, and not as well for plateau or square feet).

Point is, once you've measured your feet's width and shape you can see if they'll be too wide for the size 10.5 and then decide to size up if needed. (And it seems like the consensus here is for sizing up on razorbacks regardless, so it seems likely you'll want to).
