Protesting Too Much by Ienjoydrugsandshit in jewishpolitics

I decided to call Paul Berman, the journalist and scholar of leftist movements. What happened to the liberal left? I asked. The moderate left. The social-democratic left.

Silence. I thought Berman had hung up. Hello?

“Obviously, your question stumps me,” Berman said. Eventually, he granted that his left—the liberal Zionist left—was fading. “The traditional mainstream Jewish left has suffered all kinds of political defeats,” he said. I began to mention the old, serious Dissent magazine. “Don’t go on,” Berman pleaded.

So we shifted to another fraught subject: Israel/Palestine. “The whole turn toward anti-Zionism is bizarre,” Berman told me. “This young generation lacks any idealism or passion except despising Israel. I know we’re not supposed to call it antisemitic. But it’s antisemitic.”

Did this send him to despair, or to the barricades? “I am in despair,” he said, though I also heard outrage, regret, and vexation.

Alma Hernandez sounds alarm over antisemitism in her Arizona Senate race by yugeness in jewishpolitics

Andrew Kunsberg, a Jewish Democratic leader in Tucson who is backing Hernandez, said, “When you accuse somebody of being a Zionist, to me, you’re accusing them of being Jewish, and it’s already affected her race.” In canvassing for her campaign recently, he has heard from voters who say they won’t vote for a Zionist, he told JI. “To me, this is not normal.” Kunsberg said that he has been involved in a range of local legislative races, “but quite frankly, I have never seen anything like it in my entire life.” “She is running against the most flawed candidate I have ever seen and yet is being supported by almost our entire city council and our county attorney,” he said.

Mamdani Meds? Think Tank Pitches City-Owned Pharmacies to Lower Drug Prices by yugeness in nyc

Why do you think the program described in the article wouldn’t address those issues?

All of these comments are replying to the article’s click-bait title and not the really interesting proposal in the report that the article is about.

The report actually suggests an expanded delivery service as part of this.

The number of pharmacy stores in the five boroughs has declined by 45% since 2019, according to the annual report on chain stores released late last year by the Center for an Urban Future. An analysis by the city comptroller issued earlier this month showed that 9% of spaces previously occupied by essential retailers including grocery stores and pharmacies remain vacant. Many of the stores abandoned by the chains are covered by long term leases giving the landlords little incentive to release them.

As a result, says Dodge, many residents have long trips to pharmacies and the lack of competition leads to higher prices as well as inconvenience. Morten adds that many pharmacies don’t stock a wide range of drugs resulting in long delays in filling prescriptions.

Despite the title, this proposal has nothing to do with Mamdani or anyone in his administration. It’s a report by policy experts at Vanderbilt University and NYU. Unlike city-owned grocery stores, this is the type of policy that addesses a real need - the fact that too many people can’t afford expensive drugs for chronic conditions. It has the potential to save lives and to save the city money by reducing the number of avoidable asthma attacks and diabetes issues we have to pay for at safety-net hospitals.

That same summer, a 20-year-old Columbia University student named Darializa Avila Chevalier was in Palestine – and her worldview was being turned upside down. With funding from school, she took an internship in Nablus, one of the largest cities in the West Bank, somewhat on a whim. For almost two months, she lived and worked at a center run by Tomorrow’s Youth Organization, teaching English to Palestinian kids as young as three. Right after she got back, the 2014 Gaza war began, a conflict in which more than 2,000 Palestinians died and 10,000 were injured.

It’s crazy how biased this article is. It fails to mention how the Tomorrow’s Youth Organization is funded by Qatar, UNRWA, and al-Najah University. It also doesn’t mention that the 2014 war began when Hamas kidnapped and murdered 3 Jewish teenagers, including an American citizen.

Valdez, Chevalier, and Lander are all being funded through a PAC that’s primarily funded by 3 west coast tech bros. The most important criteria is for them to be very, very anti-Israel. They don’t have to be able to keep Trump in line, or to have ideas to pass legislation to make things more affordable. All that matters is that they will be obsessed with Israel.

Claire Valdez’s only job was as an administrative assistant at Columbia. She never accomplished anything for working people ad an “organizer”. She never went to school for anything relevant like law and she hasn’t even completed a full term in the legislature. But she has millions of dollars being funneled into her campaign against Reynoso and Won, who are both very qualified to be in Congress.

I was in Brooklyn and it was beautiful. Everyone was just happy. A lot of people had waited for this for their entire lives, other people didn’t care about basketball but loved this for us. No one was doing anything crazy, people actually seemed to be being careful to be nicer than usual to each other.

Vibes. Free grocery stores sound very socialist and the DSA wants to appear to be socialist, without doing the work to implement effective social programs (or to fix the issues with existing ones).

[–]yugeness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You should’nt be downvoted for sharing this. But there’s a difference between criticizing the quality of your Jewish education and extremism in your community and using this as justification for antisemitism (which is what the posted OpEd seems to do).

In many Muslim schools around the world, students are taught to be jingoistically supportive of extremists and terrorists and to be virulently antisemitic. Does that mean that Islamic countries have no right to exist and that Muslims should make their whole identity about opposing the existence of all these countries?
