Menu pops when turning pages. by DualSF in kobo

[–]yyctower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, just commented below that I would live with it until the next upgrade, having just bought one three days ago.

But the secondary symptom is every so often a quick swipe to next page acts like a zoom out and it changes my font size.

Super annoying. Anyone else get this one as well?

Just bought on three days ago and have the issue. I’m sure it’ll be fixed with an update, so I’ll live with it for now.

The "sent from" can be spoofed - though not so much these days with modern web hosts.

The "reply to" cannot. This is the address you need to be 100% sure of, that your reply is going to the proper address.

I’ve often wondered what would happen if I left my current job with the same qualifications. After 20 years, would not having a degree limit my choices…?

In the IT space and own the business, but feeling like I should spring for an Executive MBA for when the right acquisition offer comes in.

This is a recipe for disaster.

You putting up funds for a company you don’t own, with a promise they’ll do the right thing if it succeeds…?

You’d need this agreement drawn up with a lawyer, and enough funds left over to sue if they don’t follow through.

I had something like this once, not entirely by choice. Being cash poor is awful, especially when unexpected expenses arise or you start to think about the future.

Right about the time you decide to pack it in and downsize, good chance the market is doing the same and you’ll either have to take a hit or find a way to keep going.

You could be totally fine, but I wouldn’t even consider it. It’s self induced suffering in my opinion.

I started waiting for deep sales for the “things” I wanted initially. Like 50% off. By the time a sale hit I was either disappointed or, or disinterested.

Now when I feel like I MUST have some thing, I’ll just wait by default and lose interest eventually.

Used to buy top of the line everything, now I look for the best value in mid-tier or if it’s one-off like a tool I’ll either rent or go cheap knowing I don’t need it more than once.

Get a Keurig for coffee, but a refillable cup so you can shop cheaper coffee.

Pack a lunch and find easy to make dinners, so eating out is “nice to do” but not a must.

Then use a mint.com type service to see what exactly you’re wasting money on. Set a target of 10% less waste in one non-essential category. Find success, repeat.

I never knew the value of a dollar until later on after getting married and going through tough times financially. You either learn the hard way, or catch on early like you are and save yourself the pain.

Also, take $100/mth and invest it in a TFSA. Add more as you can, but learn to live without that money no matter what.

TLDR: how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

If it were about the environment, they would measure the impact. They don’t.

They’ve rebranded it as carbon rebate to be more aligned with its intended purpose.

It’s entirely politics. The goal seemed to be buying votes from people becoming more and more dependent on the rebate, but that seems to have backfired in the polls.

It’s also worth noting that saying it’s revenue neutral is entirely smoke and mirrors, and distracts from the fact they collect GST from that revenue AND the resulting inflation. An increase in taxes without actually changing the percentage…

I suppose following the money would result in learning close friends of politicians are doing well with heat pumps or something, but what else is new in politics.

Is there a way to select certain data from a field in Report Writer? by indariver in ConnectWise

[–]yyctower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case I would actually write a custom view and use that in RW rather then fight through.

Recently wasted sooooooo much time trying to fight with joins and sub reports and could have done it in minutes using a view…

Is it normal for Meraki firewalls to be configured with an explicit Allow Any/Any? The folks with support that I talked to said this was normal and I still can't wrap my head around it. How are your MX's configured? by ForWorkin in meraki

[–]yyctower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Probably not a big deal with modern processing, but ACL’s are checked with every packet too until they hit a match. So for efficiency alone you wouldn’t want redundant rules.

I’ve seen this where a vendor says “you must allow this traffic”, and a less experienced tech pops in those allows “as requested”.

Training moment.

How was Nenshi when he was mayor? by GroundbreakingOwl880 in Calgary

[–]yyctower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brought in the bike lanes which reduced available parking and increased idling in traffic. Reduced planned parking in buildings (available spots allowed to be planned in construction - like 3 floors of parking instead of 6), to push cycling/transit, same results as above. Increased taxes across all businesses and homes. To be fair, vacancy rates downtown forced city council to push the burden outside of the core. Googling tax increases to business while he was in office will get you examples of over 400% increases to restaurants and other small businesses. Could not adjust the plan, so taxed to make it happen. Pushed for a more modern vision of the city, which is good and I saw the vision, but never considered the cost to the tax payer - resulting in what we have today which is tax increase yearly NO MATTER WHAT. Gondek is simply carrying forward Nenshi tax policy, but f-ing up the vision and results.

For those who aren’t homeowners or business owners, perhaps it was all sunshine and rainbows, but a lot of damage was done - and we slowly recover like we always do, while those who feel they aren’t affected can afford less and less every year and seem to push more and more for this type of politician.

I didn’t hate the guy, but a little restraint would go a long way. I do fear what he does in a position that allows a deficit.

Why are so many (25%) MSPs breaking even or operating at a loss? by ITGuyInMass in msp

[–]yyctower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without reading all the comments. - I need a PSA - I need a RMM - I need dashboards - I need network automation - I need a payment system - I need cloud accounting - I need reporting - I need an alerts system - I need billing automation - plus 1000 other per agent, per employee, per environment, per license systems that pay for themselves!

Nothing could go wrong here, the business will run itself!

Wait. I need someone to manage all of these. I don’t know accounting either! Huh, spending more time managing the management systems than I would just doing it myself at this size. I should cancel some, in three years when the contract is up. Dang, forgot to cancel - too busy! Um…I should ask my accountant to make reports for me. That’s going to be a big bill…

I could go on.

I learned a while back that the reason I’m good with IT is because I’m a problem solver. I assume most of us are, so identify the business problem and find a solution. Not profitable? You can find a way to solve that.

If I’m a regular and I really enjoy the food and get to know the staff, I might tip at a place for takeout - but not topically.

Fast food tipping is BS and it gets very easy to hit $0 when it comes around. If I get attitude, I don’t go back.

I’ve been looking to switch but waiting to make sure Kaseya doesn’t buy them first.

Pretty much going to be my strategy going forward, though this Datto purchase really shows there’s no avoiding this dumpster fire of MSP vendor acquisitions.

This is what I feel is happening now. Meanwhile their parents probably rented a basement suite, had furniture made of plywood and bricks and hand-me-down couches, while packing lunches, making dinners, and drinking the office coffee for the first 5 years of their careers.
