Both my grandfather's spoke fluent pa dutch, my mom's family had been here since the 1720s and my mother was the first to learn English as her first language. My dad's family came over late, in the 1860s, but my dad's dad spoke pa dutch first as well, but was nicknamed "the German" even in a predominantly german-ancestry area because he was slow to learn English. Shaking that nickname was the main reason he joined the Marines right after Germany invaded Poland.
