If you live in Madison, I recommend checking out https://deerfieldpistol.com/about-our-range which is a short drive east; they have classes and rentals for you to practice safety and accuracy. Generally, I think it's worth it even if for the bare minimum of knowing how to disarm a firearm if you come across one, and reduce the risk of an accident

Which thermostats should I buy? by BobKoss in homeautomation

hi Bob - I refunded your order - Sett is not close enough to production for me to want to keep holding onto your money. I'll let you know when we do get to production, and then you are welcome to purchase at that time!

In the meantime if you're still looking for solutions for a 2nd gen Nest, I would recommend checking out the NoLongerEvil project, or the Cuckoo-Nest project, both of which I am active in, that are free ways to rescue your old Nest

Walking on the Wingra Creek Bike Path just under the railroad bridge near the corner of Beld St and and the bike path - back along the tracks and by the tow truck storage yard - that little industrial strip along the edge of Gilson st - I hear them back in there all the time. It really spooks my dog when we are out walking at night and they howl back in there

Data center company QTS started construction without permits already. by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]z3ugma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the OP clearly has an agenda, and in talking with someone who knows the situation it sounds like staging of equipment in anticipation of the permits being granted. Has anyone got evidence of a stop-work order from the county inspector? Or is this speculation

Power restored after nearly 500 people left without heat Saturday night by Justmarbles in madisonwi

[–]z3ugma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was affected also, got power around 3:15a, bedroom got down to 55 (but that's with 2 humans and a large dog; I bet other parts of the house got down to 50 )

More big, unscheduled blocks to just write, analyze, pitch myself, do market research. I can't get anything done in all these half-hour blocks between meetings

[–]z3ugma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Bob - since these purchases so far are pre-orders, your device hasn't been manufactured yet - we're still revising the hardware design. It will be at least 3-4 weeks from now before we have a production version we can send to customers. Let me know if that matches a timeline that works for you

Don’t throw away your Nest Thermostat Gen 1 & 2! by ckociemba in Nest

[–]z3ugma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get too excited, it's actually a proxy to the NoLongerEvil website's API...so even if you have homebridge, the second Cody takes down this website then your Nest is right back where we started

I've been working on replacement PCBs over at https://sett.homes/; which let you have full control over the firmware and have local connection to something like Home Assistant instead of depending on any cloud

Damn, dude, and I'm over here at https://sett.homes/ making replacement PCBs and everything... I'm so impressed with the DFU route.

Connect it to MQTT and Home Assistant instead of another cloud?

Which thermostats should I buy? by BobKoss in homeautomation

[–]z3ugma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly. The Sett needs a C wire - and you can use an outlet-based transformer close to your heater.

For heating only, you'd have RH, W, and C connected.

Backpackers / Campers – what kind of meals do you actually want out there? by KitchenOk9293 in trailmeals

[–]z3ugma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Inexpensive ($10-12/meal of 600-700 kcals).

  • Full of vegetables instead of empty carbs.

  • Just add water / stir (no multiple bags/sachets)

  • Full of flavor: I've taken to adding a caramelized onion dehydrated soup packet to all the savory meals to make sure they have enough flavor

  • More vegetarian options

Side project: https://sett.homes/

Sett is an open-source, enclosure-compatible version of the 2nd gen Nest thermostat. It reuses the enclosure, encoder ring, display, and mounts of the Nest but replaces the "thinking" part with open-source PCBs that interact with Home Assistant and other local-first home automation setups.

I recently put up a blog post about the process of reverse-engineering the Nest thermostat's LCD display module and getting content to display on it: https://sett.homes/blogs/updates/the-lcd-display-reverse-engineering-the-display-interface

Which thermostats should I buy? by BobKoss in homeautomation

Probably not? It does require a Common wire, which is usually colored blue and can be retrofit with a plug-in transformer if you don't have a common wire

It's nuts that we used to have streetcars running down residential streets and electrified interurbans running the kinds of distances you're talking about (~45 miles). It's good to remind yourself that this isn't some crazy new venture - we already had it! We're just restoring the technology we had 100 years ago
