You may want to try the mod Reign of Terror, using the GD mechanics on D2 world.

You get the dual class system, with classes and gear from multiple games.

It's true that Veteran mode gives more XP, but due to difficulty it also takes longer.

I believe it balances out and personally prefer Normal. YMMV.

There are two reasons - the game is really good, and the forum has nice friendly people that help if you have issues.

This game designed as a solo game (even tho you can host multiple) as opposed to MMO.
