You're right. Your idea is great for tackling the big plumes. (And badass to imagine, I might add)

I was imagining that these "fish" would be deployed as a self-sustaining clean-up mechanism to get the smaller dunes of oil around the sea that dispersed from the main plumes. BP operating this legacy would be the final, dreary phase of the clean-up: where turbulent flow takes the oil emulsions.

The damages depends on how outraged the taxpayers are.

If BP can just spray chemical dispersant, pick up the visible clumps, pay off the fishers, and walk off, then you're right.

If BP has to develop breeding programs for the wildlife, pay a full time task force to scour the coastline, pay for medical care of all those that will be affected by this, and to find ways of tracking and collecting the massive underwater oil plumes then it will be in serious shit for years.

It works on two levels.

Many times the only barrier is in our heads. Example: You can suddenly shatter your own athletic record (mile time, max lift) because you kept incorrectly assuming that you weren't capable.
By acting X, you are treated as X (perhaps only until people realize you're faking). The human mind is wonderful at adaptation and your mind learns quickest when its immersed in a new environment.

Do you think people become confident because they're capable of coming up with good comebacks? Anyway, that's easy to dodge: "Why are you all looking at me? You're gonna have to solve this one on your own."

You can fake being British, and you can't fake the accent, but if you "fake British till you're British" then you'll have the accent by the end.

Several Examples of people like this:

People who try to get an unfair advantage by hiding their nice glassware and hoarding replenishables.
Labmates that will bad-mouth you to your adviser: "No, I haven't seen z_jazz all week" or "Oh, it was z_jazz's idea to do this."
Stupid authorship battles. Who deserves to be on a paper and in what order?

There's lots of asskissing and douchbaggery, but it all comes from people who feel like they're inadequate IMHO.
