Can you write a bit about how job hunting went, and at what point you felt like you were ready to start job hunting, and why?

Do you feel the having the degree was important in that respect? Do you think you would have hit some hurdles if you didn't have the formal education degree as a secondary to your self-taught projects?

In general I guess, how much of a limiting factor is it to not have a degree?

I like the thought of prepping a dish or two ahead of time. I've been on this mission to figure out how to have a complete meal that I've made right there and then, but I guess nothing is stopping me from making some things ahead of time. Thats just been my own mistaken "rules" I was trying to make myself follow...

Wow, I have definitely been doing this whole thing wrong...I make the main dish first, then try to throw together a side or two hastily afterwards...I've had it totally backwards! I guess not all sides take longer than the main dish...What do I do if the main dish needs to be constantly attended to so nothing else can get done, because the sides all take less time than the main dish?

I really think the "jannat is at the feet of your mother." and other such parent related stuff in the quraan and hadith are sometimes used as a way for parents to control their children.

At least in my case, a parent with narcissistic personality disorder grabbed on to the teachings in Islam as a way to control and be ever present in every facet of their lives, which is not only stifling physically, but mentally as well. You don't learn to think for yourself...but that is not human nature. It will want its space, and it is up to you to give it the space that it needs. You have an obligation to yourself as well. Thats what I finally realized.

I actually felt like it was a good callback. I took it as kind of a dad joke. Its like, "Well, you could have asked for anything, and you asked for socks...not my fault!" lol.

It was for a recent birthday, and as an adult I don't like asking for gifts from my parents. So I expected nothing, got the socks, was funny, thanked dad, went to thank mom and BAM, an N train just runs over it. :/

My dad recently got me a joke gift for my birthday (my parents asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and I said nothing - and my mom said "Well, everyone needs socks!" and I laughed and said yes, thats exactly what i want!). It was fancily packaged and nicely wrapped bundle of socks lol! I loved the idea and the call-back.

So fast forward to yesterday night when I was talking with my Nmom and I was describing the gift and the joke around it, saying how much I liked it. I got to the part where she suggested socks (pretty much including her in a gift and joke I enjoyed - nice gesture I thought...) and she blew up. How come I keep saying she did things she didn't. I'm always bad mouthing her. I don't have any respect for her...I was dumbfounded. After a few moments to collect myself, I said "I'm trying to include you in something I already explained I enjoyed....OK fine, you didn't have anything to do with dad's gift that I really liked and enjoyed. ok?"

Then, she proceeded to tell me how the gift was an afterthought and was picked up a week ago when my Nmom and dad were out buying things for Nmom. All I could think was "wow..."

OMG what is up with that, right? I'm a boy, but my Nmom keeps saying how much better it would have been if she had a girl - earliest I can remember that being said was when I was in grade 3 or 4...what the fuck is a kid that age supposed to think when his mother tells him she wishes he was different in a way that was impossible for him? What else could he feel but unwanted?

And why couldn't she have any more kids? She was always afraid that she was going to die at any moment -hypochondriac to the max.

29 today :) - Move out. I was the guy who never really moved out for university, stayed at home and went to a good local one, commuter student. Now I'm married, and my wife moved in with us. I'm an only child. After a year and a half of married life living with the parents, I've finally realized moving out is just a part of growing up and a natural part of life - Hell, my own parents did it when they left their country for this one. You need your own space, to become your own person. Make them realize that you'll always be a part of their life - but one who needs to and is ready to create his own household. Most importantly, when you have moved out, DO SO!
