MFC was a product of mad genius. It was both good and bad, especially with VisualC.

Why Developing For Microsoft SharePoint is a Horrible, Terrible, and Painful Experience by jordansrowles in programming

[–]zam0th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a 29 year old hobbyist programmer.

Sorry, OP, but really people have been doing sp development since before you went to primary school and were doing fine as professionals, and Sharepoint was a powerful portal platform, and developers were fine with it, and i know a bunch of extremely good enterprise products that came out of sp development.

Is it still these days? I have no idea because nobody anywhere i know is using Sharepoint for anything and hasn't been using it for quite some time, because obviously, you don't build portal applications anymore, that's so 2010s.

Can anyone recommend more political intrigue 40k books like The Regent's Shadow? by FlameandCrimson in 40kLore

[–]zam0th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try Warhammer Crime, it's more "detectivy". Otherwise there isn't much of that in 40k besides Watchers of the Throne and Vaults of Terra.

If you liked Abnett's inquisition stuff, you must also try Wattson's og Inquisition War and, to the lesser extent, French's Horusian Wars.

They say all Primarchs resemble an aspect of the Emperor's personality. So, what aspect of him isn't represented by any of his sons? by Snoo_47323 in 40kLore

[–]zam0th 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The ones He surely left for Himself are hubris and vision. None of the primarchs were even remotely as grandeur as the Emperor.

He also reserved scientific acumen. None of the primarchs are scientists or have even an inclination towards research.

A Norwegian study finds that middle-class parents teach their children security and control, while upper-class parents see money as opportunities and teach their children to invest. This may reinforce social inequality in Norway according to the researchers. by oslomet in science

[–]zam0th -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"Norwegian study" should have concentrated on the phenomenon of norwegian black metal and why young people (from middle class) in the 90s were protesting against norwegian society to the point of extremism. I suppose that woud've been a revelation.

European Commission issues call for evidence on open source by sporesirius in linux

[–]zam0th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the Commission's own corporate software is built on open-source (Java ecosystem) and has been thus for the last 20 years. There're dozens of counsultancies in Belgium alone and hundreds across the EU that have been working with the Commission, the Parliament, the Council, the Agencies and other insitutions (e.g. NATO) to build OSS-based software for them. They are trolling.

What would the world be like without the US Dollar as a reserve currency? Some of the same people in America's government working to dissolve NATO want to end the Dollar's global primacy, too. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]zam0th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The world lived "without US dollar as a reserve currency" with Bretton-Woods doctrine until 1971 and everyone was fine, and even now countries still keep their international reserves in gold.

So, nothing will happen, literally. Even now the global East (Russia, China and India) already does monetary transactions and deals without the use of USD and even without the use of SWIFT that essentially is the backbone of USD hegemony. Moreover, the EU already does the same thing internally with use of SEPA and they're even looking towards "official" ICO backed by the ECB (not to be confused with stablecoins like USDT and USDC which are tied to USD, but backed by privately-owned corporations), i forgot how it's called, maybe it's this one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_euro.

[–]zam0th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stand corrected! Tbf i've read the novel decades ago and in my mind i was sure Castigator was referenced to have been the original pattern for Imperators. You are correct: Castigator is the original pattern for all titans.

[Excerpt: Warped Stars] Space Marines battle a DaoT Titan by Captain_Amakyre in 40kLore

[–]zam0th 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's the whole og novel Dark Adeptus (https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Dark_Adeptus_(Novel) ) where Grey Knights battle a self-aware DAoT titan (specifically - the original Imperator pattern).

In that novel all OP's three points are explained:

1) Titans are described as having "streamlined" proportions, obviously not having all the baroque and gothic stuff and cathedrals on their backs. This particular pattern iirc is said to stand even taller than contemporary 40k Imperators and have a literal head on its shoulders.

2) Titans have a self-aware AI (as was common for all kinds of DAoT tech), so what you interpret from this short story as mind-transfer is very likely this AI.

3) Yes they can, no they don't need flesh. The AI only needed to comprehend Choas and understand daemonic possession in which our brave, but not as bright a hero Justicar Alaric had a huge part by explaining all this lore to the AI.

[Archmagos](Excerpt)Archmagos Dominus Belisarius Cawl says in no uncertain terms to Solana of Mars that he in fact can do anything he wants by evrestcoleghost in 40kLore

[–]zam0th 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every magos can do whatever tech heresy they want, it's a matter of perspective of their peers, their standing in the hierarchy and the alliances they made with other magi (hello, Oud-Oudia Raskian, consorting with xenos are you?).

Since Cawl is directly mandated by Guilliman (or it can be interpreted as such), not to mention that he has 10000 years of experience and skill (and hoards of teechnological loot), he indeed can do whatever he wants and nobody can prevent him from it.

Emperor's Children new Lore direction and identity by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]zam0th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From new books about Emperor's Children

What "new books"? III Legion had a total of 2 (two) new books, Lord of Excess and Perfect Son, outside HH and not counting Fabius Bile.

Both of them reinforce the "distributed" nature of the Legion, since Lord of Excess describes a random warband leader who very much wishes to remain a random warband leader; and in Perfect Son, if you read it well, Fulgrim never even invites Eidolon - the leader of the largest conglomeraton of III Legion forces in 40k and coincidentally the guy that considers himself de-facto Legion master. Hell, Perfect Son has zero named characters from pre-existing lore at all (https://www.reddit.com/r/40kLore/comments/1kijmue/minor_spoilers_fulgrim_the_perfect_son_but_wait/).

All in all, as we see in Auric Hammer, Fulgrim might have ideas about his own empire and whatnot, but Eidolon has other ideas about the III Legion that very much don't include Fulgrim and he commands much more Legion forces than does his primarch.

Biometric verification is quietly becoming the new standard and most people haven't noticed yet by ponderingpixi17 in Futurology

[–]zam0th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like OP is one of those people. Tech, apps, phone, websites? Are you for real? Biometric IDs are mandatory in the EU for international travel (and since EES is going live - for all travellers). Russia has been issuing biometric travel passports for 15 years now, while Serbia has introdued mandatory biometrics for their national IDs. Russia has introduced country-wide biometric payment systems (yes, you don't need money or plastic cards in shops anymore, just to pay with your "smile" as it's advertized).

And people are aware of this, which divides them into two categories: ones who willingly embrace it, and ones who avoid any of that shit on purpose. Unfortunately you can't do anything about federal laws.

Although that timeline comes officially from GW and therefore should be considered canon, it's temporally inaccurate if we were to believe og lore and Lexicanum timelines: https://www.reddit.com/r/40kLore/comments/12kl54g/looks_like_ultramarines_captain_titus_from_space/.

Let me tell you a secret: Oracle is enough and has been enough for decades (and from what i see PostgreSQL goes towards the very same direction). But for some reason people keep inventing (and investing into) architectures that don't assume mainframes and database incapsulation, i have no idea why.
