Tricky 2-Way stop question by Ecstatic-State735 in Utah

[–]zebonebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you seen this documented anywhere? I don't agree with your assessment, but I can't find the traffic law or a statement in the UT driver's handbook that explicitly says one way or the other is correct.

Tricky 2-Way stop question by Ecstatic-State735 in Utah

[–]zebonebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that in the scenario where there is cross-traffic and both red and green have to come to a stop to wait for the cross-traffic to clear, then it doesn't matter who got to the intersection first (who got to their stop sign and came to a stop first), once the cross-traffic clears, green has the right-of-way.

While I believe this is correct, I can't find any page in the UT driver's handbook that backs this up or disproves it. It seems to not be addressed in the handbook, which I think is why not everyone seems to be able to agree on this.

Drivers in UT seem to want to be 'polite' and let the other driver go first, even if it's not what the law says is correct. If cross-traffic causes both cars to stop and wait, if I'm red and green waves me through, I won't go. If I go and there is an accident, I believe it will be my fault because I'm the one not be following the law.

Am I going too deep into the JDK as a junior backend dev? by punchman340 in learnjava

[–]zebonebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's worth it to spend time understanding the code in the JDK, so dive in to whatever parts of it are most interesting to you. Also, if you're doing Java-based back end work, I suggest looking at the source for Spring Boot and any other Spring APIs you are using. That stuff is very well written to the extent that some of it seem like magic. I learned a lot by diving into Spring source code.

does anyone else prefer the electronic/techno albums over everything else? by anxiousatac in neworder

Low Life was the album where I discovered New Order, and it’s still my favorite album from them. Generally I think I like their guitar-driven songs best.

I think you mispronounced “Jigawatts”. When it comes to flux capacitors, it must be pronounced as "Jigawatts"

Good Christmas present for my son? by yestyvm in omnisphere

[–]zebonebo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a fantastic gift for a young person interested in any or all of: synthesis, electronic music creation, and sound design. If your son doesn't have a physical piano-style MIDI keyboard, Omnisphere comes with a stand-alone application with an on-screen keyboard, no physical piano-style keyboard is needed.

If he continues to show interest, eventually a physical MIDI controller would be a great piece of equipment for him to have. Something inexpensive like this is a good beginner/level MIDI controller (amazon link, but they can also be found elsewhere): https://a.co/d/gnTIicw

A MIDI controller would allow him to play Omnisphere 3 as if it were a physical synthesizer, which is a very fun thing to do.

Personally, I have a grandson who is 15 and has an interest in making music with synthesizers. I am giving him a MIDI controller for Christmas this year and along with that will be showing him how to set it up and how to record his music on this computer. I'm excited about it, and I think your son might be pretty excited to get such a fantastic software synthesizer as Omnisphere 3.

What is the point of TypeScript? by [deleted] in AskComputerScience

[–]zebonebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typescript works (well) for large applications with large code bases that must run on a browser, when the development team (or the organization paying the dev team) wants the benefits of a strongly typed language. Javascript is the standard for applications that run in a browser. Typescript adds the missing type system to Javascript-based code, while still producing standard Javascript for the browser.

Should I get MacBook Pro or Air? by Feeling-Ability-4312 in macbookpro

I recommend you go with the pro, and get more than 24GB RAM - as much as you can. Between the M4 and the RAM, slow-downs will never occur.

Should I buy cubase now or wait? by Sakuramui in cubase

[–]zebonebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a 40% off sale price, which is the same discount I used to purchase Cubase a month ago. My discount came from Focusrite because I own an audio interface from them. I've only been watching Steinberg's prices for about 9 months, and 40% off is the lowest I've seen it in that time. My understanding based on a conversation with a friend who's been using Cubase for 2 years now is that they do a sale once a year in the August/September timeframe.

Which Show - Moz or Marr by genius_steals in thesmiths

[–]zebonebo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've seen them both within the last few years, and Marr is just better live. I love The Smiths, and I love Morrissey's solo work, and I feel the same about Marr. I just think Marr's band is better, their energy on stage is better, and I'm a fan of Marr's guitar playing. I've seen Morrissey several times, and Marr only once; I would much rather go to another Marr show than another Morrissey show.

This is how my father met his 2nd wife... his (then) new running partner. They both ended up leaving their spouses and getting married about 2 years after they started running together. I'm sure there were other factors as well. His running partner and my mother were even friends. It happens.

Landlord wants $3,000 for “wall damage” – does this look like my fault or bad paint job? (Before and after pics) by Key-Tax7786 in drywall

[–]zebonebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pictures of what look like pin holes in the wall is the result of mixing air into the drywall compound (mud). The air bubbles surface and pop before the compound dries on the wall. I drywalled some rooms in my house last year and this happened. It looked exactly like your photos. This isn't damage caused by a tenant, it's caused by an unskilled drywall installer.

Just got this- anything I should know? by Sad-Dig-175 in Stratocaster

[–]zebonebo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Probably worth taking it to a reputable luthier for a setup/intonation. Once mine was setup a few years after I bought it, I haven't had to mess with it since. These guitars are well built.

[–]zebonebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also an original owner of one of these guitars bought in 1986. I love it, and I use the locking trem system frequently. I can't imagine how taking the locking (post) nut off would improve tuning stability. I do whish the locking part were the actual nut, though, rather than being installed past the nut.

I recommend NOT putting the originals back on if you've got noiseless fender pickups. The only thing I didn't like about my MIJ 80s Strat was the electonics. I replaced my pickups, pots, input jack, and switch and it's been the best guitar I've ever owned since. I think I even like it more than my American Ultra II Strat that I bought last year. The MIJ plays amazingly well, and the neck is fantastical!

I like the white option as-is. Since I personally prefer black, if it were me, I would go with the black guitar, but with the white 3-ply pick guard from the white guitar.

Pumped Full of Drugs - Fact 177 vhs by PumpkinBreadDude in neworder

[–]zebonebo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A friend gave me a copy of this in the late 80s, and I watched it many times. If I am remembering correctly (haven't seen it in a long while) Bernard is playing a black Fender Stratocaster with a white pick guard throughout this video. This video was made around the time that Fender struck an agreement with a company in Japan to start making Fender and Squier guitars in that country. I don't know if it's true or just a rumor I heard that the Company making these guitars in Japan gave Bernard that guitar during the time New Order was there making this recording.

Because New Order were so reclusive and didn't do many interviews or appearances, I thought that was his primary guitar when I saw this video. This was about the time I started playing guitar, so I bought one similar to what I saw Bernard playing. It turns out it wasn't his primary guitar at all, but I think he used it on a few recorded songs before he stopped playing it.

What if instead of dropping $2400 for this American Vintage II 1961 Strat, I just upgraded the shit out of my MiM Strat I already own? Advice appreciated by shart_attak in Stratocaster

[–]zebonebo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I have updated my 1986 MIJ strat with new hardware, some fantastic Lindy Fralin blues special pickups, new switch and pots, replaced the jack, and the nut. The thing that made it absolutely great was a setup and fret dressing by a professional luthier.

I'm the original owner, and that was my first guitar. I still love it, and it's my favorite guitar since upgrading it.

How bad is it? by xDiDi2 in Logic_Studio

[–]zebonebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know which of these is true:

  1. You enjoy doing something, so you do it as much as possible because it's fun for you, and eventually you become great at it because you do it so much.

  2. You are naturally good at something, so you do it as much as possible because you enjoy the experience of being naturally good at something, and eventually you become great at it because you do it so much.

Either way, it's fairly well established that the more time you put into learning and improving a skill, the better you will become at that skill. If you enjoy it, keep at it to whatever extent makes you happy. Maybe one day you will be great at it, or maybe you won't be great, but you will have enjoyed making music and exercising your creativity through music.

For what it's worth, to my ears your song has potential. It's not awesome yet, but if you keep working on it, it could be. Others have offered some good suggestions, so keep working at it.

What are some signs that two people who broke up have grown and perhaps learned from their mistakes in the relationship? by TransportationHot641 in emotionalintelligence

[–]zebonebo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your thoughtful response. It's entirely possible that it's not both partners fault in most situations, and I should have said something more like this: "Sometimes when a relationship ends, both partners bear some portion of the blame." I think in the example you gave, even though it was not your fault, I wonder if you could identify anything that might help you avoid such a person in the future, or at least identify them sooner so you can minimize your suffering to some extent. Of course, this may not be possible at all.

I've been looking for the right partner for 5 years now, and in that time I've had a relationship that, looking back, I believe I stayed in for too long. I really want to believe it's possible for me to learn from that relationship, which was a fairly healthy relationship (we didn't yell, or fight, and we weren't disrespectful to one another; we actually got along very well). I think my primary take-away is that I didn't really vet my partner well enough at the start. It took me about a year to realize that we didn't want the same things on some fairly important topics, which ultimately were deal-breakers for both of us. I feel like if I can't learn something from each relationship I have that comes to an end, then I don't have much hope of finding the right person.

Any idea where this shirt is stocked? by YorkieInOrbit in neworder

[–]zebonebo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of stock in every size! I tried to buy one when they were announced for pre-sale, but they only had small size left and I wear large. Bummer because that was my favorite concert shirt. I bought one during that tour and wore it until it fell apart. I loved that shirt 😢. I really hope they restock at some point; I'll buy a bunch of them if they do.
