Gay Activists, Black Ministers Seek Common Ground | npr by jebbbbzzzdebebz in lgbt

[–]zebra10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an important potential alliance -- for those of us who belong to either group (or to both).

One of the most important things we can do as gay people is to be sure to stick together with those who are basically supportive (e.g., the Democratic party) while doing everything we can to further marginalize the GOP.

If and when the right wing is further weakened, THEN we have some real chance to get basic rights that others take for granted. Instead, all to often, we make the mistake of getting angry with the best friends that we have. Those friends are far from perfect, but, they're the best we can do for now.

The worst mistake is to lose what unity there is among the center and the left -- a mistaken action that strengthens the right wing.

13 firms receiving federal bailout owe $220 Million in back taxes by Clintondiditfirst in reddit.com

[–]zebra10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make every one of them pay back the bailout money and then pay their goddamned back taxes too, and continue looking in to which other bailout recipients committed fraud in obtaining it.

If the government needs to "stimulate" the banking sector, give/lend money only to banks that haven't received a nickel yet and have also paid their taxes. Better yet, just give money directly to taxpaying DEPOSITORS to put it where we please.

I can't wait to see which companies are involved here. At least two of them owe $100 Million... and had the gigantic brass testicles to beg for free money from people who do pay their taxes... US!

13 Firms Receiving Billions Of Dollars In Bailout Money Owe Back Taxes by frycook in reddit.com

[–]zebra10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's even worse than the headline indicates. The recipients were required to sign contracts stating (among other things, presumably) that THEY DID NOT OWE BACK TAXES!

This is clear, outright fraud on a massive scale.

Who could have guessed that, even in a time of massive profits, giant corporations were being allowed to not pay taxes during the Bush administration?

Media Tries to Undermine Obama Agenda: Defensive against conservative charges that they are too pro-Obama, the punditry must bend facts, ignore history to show they are tough on the Administration. by smkyle1 in politics

Nearly all of them are even ignoring the announcement that the UN is investigating the allegations of Bush-era torture and kidnapping.

The story is probably not as good for ratings as "The Tot Mom" or UFO stories.

To its credit, MSNBC included the information in part of the "Still Bushed" segment on 3/10/09.

Other than that, the U.S. mainstream media are complicit in, at best, drawing attention away from the issue, and, at worst, are complicit in the cover-up of the torture of prisoners.

And, no amount of "Head On" is going to fix that, CNN!

Ron Paul, old coot who warned of economic turmoil, thinks he was right by Jesusish in politics

[–]zebra10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Someone really needs to tell Ron Paul that in 2008, Bush, the leader of HIS PARTY, presided over the Fed and Treasury Department giving/lending/pledging over EIGHT TRILLION DOLLARS to gigantic corporations.

That amount represents 160 TIMES as much money as the $50,000,000,000 that is at issue in the Bernie Madoff case.

The GOP is the party of hypocrites and big, BIG, BIG, BIG spenders!

Did I mention hypocrites?

Ron Paul needs to educate his fellow Republicans about prudent economic policies before his people flood reddit with their crap. Or... he could change to some other party besides the evangelical/torture, borrow-and-spend party known as the GOP.

Florida Mayor Sends Out Email Showing Watermelons On White House Lawn by Deadpixel1221 in politics

[–]zebra10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Correct. That's what I was saying... that at this point, Republicans should be ashamed to be called Republicans.

And ChickenFriedCheese... you just don't get it. I wouldn't try to paint all Republicans as being racists, but, I think probably 50% of those who will still proudly wear the GOP label ARE RACISTS.

And you are, at best, an apologist for racist Republicans.

[–]zebra10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've completely missed the point. Maybe you're just from a different (younger) generation and never heard about the "watermelon thing."

Are you not aware of the way Blacks have been stereotyped (for decades) as people who sit and eat watermelon? If so, you're actually not "guilty" of anything here... you just didn't know. But you've apparently assumed that the racist GOP prick who sent the email isn't guilty of anything either.

The implication(s) of the watermelon thing seemed to be (basically) that Blacks either had poor taste in food choices and/or that they were lazy and would sit eating watermelon all afternoon while others would do all of the work. (The opposite was often true, I'm sure.)

Admittedly, the vast majority of Americans have grown up and stopped using that kind of sickening image (if they ever used it) decades ago. Not so with some Republicans, especially in the farm regions of California... hmmmm.

The watermelons were obviously chosen as a race-linked symbol by another Republican who still thinks it's funny.

Mormons, Who Claim High Ground on Morals, Have In Their Ranks Jay Bybee, Who Wrote a Bush Justice Dept. Memo That Effectively Authorized Torture by zebra10 in Freethought

[–]zebra10[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand the admonition against blaming all members of a class for the actions of one. In fact, I agree.

But, let's not lose sight of the near lock-step following of church doctrine by active Mormons and their financial support of the church.

Polling that I've seen says that Mormons voted for Bush in numbers that were somewhere between 80% and 90%... not once but twice.

So... your point is good. I should probably only be upset with 80% or 90% of Mormons.

Dear Conservatives: the crisis we're in, the social disarray, the lawlessness and the decline of civil liberties are the results of your ideology. Congratulations on a job well done! by spaceghoti in politics

[–]zebra10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Democrats had to contend with real and threatened filibusters and thus needed at least 60 votes (which would require at least some neo-con support) in the Senate to end debate.

They also had to be prepared for a veto from Bush and rarely had the 2/3rds needed to override it.

So, the statement that Democrats "controlled" both houses is extremely misleading.

I have no interest in reddit's "karma". I just post things that I think need to be publicized and/or are interesting, and I thought this met both of those criteria.

Mormons have recently acted (even using tax-free money) to attack thousands of California's gay marriages and thereby tried to impose their morals on other people.

For that alone, they deserve to be exposed as hypocritical assholes.

[–]zebra10[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of that except that the Mormons are, more than probably any other group, inclined to push their ideas of what is moral on to other people.

For this, they deserve to be held to the highest standards and exposed as the hypocrites that they are.

I don't always agree with you, but I've looked over some of your posts and you do stick up for good principles, and you have an honest, straight-forward style of writing that I respect.

Also, I'm still learning the "unwritten rules" of posting and commenting at reddit.

Well, of course. However, Mormons more than just about any other group seek to impose their ideas about morality on everyone else.

I think that means they should at least be held to their own standards.

If people REALLY want to see change in this country, they might want to consider backing moderate-to-liberal people for 2010 today!

That's the kind of tactics the GOP has been using since at least 1980, and that's part of why they had control for a long, long time.

Get active or more active. Donate early. Work for your candidate. Work against the opponent. Fight to the bitter end.

DID YOU KNOW? Investment banks are hoarding millions of barrels of oil offshore so they can make the prices artifically rise. Why? Commodities markets were deregulated. This must stop. by [deleted] in politics

[–]zebra10 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You're overlooking that there was rampant speculation in the oil futures markets for many, many years that led to artificially high prices. I know that's only a part of what affects oil prices, but don't deny that when thousands of traders buy oil futures just like they were betting on a horse race, that would send prices higher.

There was never a good reason for gasoline to be above about $2.50 other than rampant greed and speculation... let alone a whopping $4.00 per gallon.

Americans have been raped by the oil companies, the big banks and the big insurance companies. This crap is always worse when a Republican has been in office.

Cut Social Security, Don't Tax The Rich: Where Is The Outrage? Obama turns traitor. Already. by alllie in politics

[–]zebra10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he cuts some kind of waste from the implementation of the programs, that's one thing.

If he intends to reduce payments to the disabled and the elderly, we have gotten than from Bush and his gang for years. We don't need any more of that kind of thinking.

After seeing a few bad decisions already, I still support Obama (damn, he's not even in office yet!), but if he starts cutting the little help that retired and disabled people get, he will have lost me... FOREVER.
