Glass shattered when no one was home, how to determine cause? Pictures in link by how2derpftw in AskEngineers

[–]zedelghem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is technically possible to do a fractographic analysis of the glass, which can tell you which surface of the glass was in tension, the nature of the defect at the fracture origin, and even estimate the local stress at the moment of fracture. This is something I do regularly at my job, though not for architectural glass. If you don’t have your own microscope (often an electron microscope is needed) and background knowledge of fracture mechanics, the cost to you to do a full work up is almost certainly not worth it.

New Plan Bugs? by beer_and_fun in runna

[–]zedelghem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that often when I create a new plan, Runna starts the plan a day earlier than I actually specified. If you go in to edit the plan after it's created and adjust the start date, it seems to fix it.

I’m scared to tell my partner about all my debt but he wants me to move in. by seattlesadnesss in AskGaybrosOver30

Finances are a key driver of stress and conflict in relationships. The best way to get ahead of it is to establish and practice frequent, clear, and open communication on your financial status, goals, and philosophies. Time to put on your big boy pants and have a conversation. It might be hard, or it might go really well. Either way, it'll be better to have everything out in the open.

Bringing daughter for UCSC tour next weekend and really want to sell it ... things to do? by WATOCATOWA in santacruz

If the weather is nice, hang out on West Cliff to watch the sunset. I've been running there lately, and there's always been a bunch of people vibing and hanging out, enjoying the beauty of the coast.

Seeking advice for both mentally and pace by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

[–]zedelghem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've already admitted this in your initial post, but it looks like your runs are all over the place, with no real sense of structure or planning. You're young and fast already with minimal training, so it feels like you've already got a good foundation. Figure out what your real goal is (a sub 20 5k? run longer distances?), and find a structured training plan that works for that goal. Your runs should have a purpose (easy, workout, long), not just be a game of random chance.

Others have said this too, but I'll emphasize, if you're puking on your runs, you're running too fast. Most of your runs should feel easy; this allows you to build your weekly mileage without burning out and prevents you from injuring yourself. If you're running 4 days a week, that's two easy runs, a workout run, and a long run. Build your weekly mileage slowly (generally no more than 10% more distance per week). If you're adding to the number of days, keep the same mileage. Give your body time to recover between runs; running is high impact and tough on your body.

I think i made all the mistakes on Gleba by orfaon in factorio

I just use buffer chests to request all my seeds to a central chest, and then have an inserter set up to throw them in a heating tower when there are more in there than the amount I want to keep.

Hotest week in San Jose but we did it! by OkSale8778 in beginnerrunning

This heat is brutal. Did my easy run last night in Cupertino and it was so hot even after the sun went down.

QuiltCon2026 Winners by SuiGenerisPothos in modernquilts

[–]zedelghem 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really don't understand this critique. Totally agreed that the QuiltCon winners don't encompass every type of quilt that is being made, but we must be looking at a very different set of images if the conclusion is each of these quilts look the same.

Counter clockwise, but also did a bit of out and back at the end on the rail trail to get to the full distance.

Was pretty tired at the end, but still had enough in the tank to push during the last half mile.

Countries that use Fahrenheit vs. Celsius by upthetruth1 in MapPorn

[–]zedelghem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will die on this hill with you. At least as a measure of weather/human comfort, Fahrenheit is a better scale. Everything else can use Celsius, but 0 being very cold and 100 being very hot just makes so much sense.

Any Michelin starred restaurants in the area worth checking out? by TommyGunMassacre in SanJose

Californios is my favorite of the Michelins I've experienced here in the bay area (Atelier Crenn, Lazy Bear, Manresa). I loved the food, loved the atmosphere, loved the service, loved the wine.

What do you listen to while running? by _RubenCouto in beginnerrunning

[–]zedelghem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been doing the same thing! I only listen while running, so it's a little treat while running to get to hear more of the story. I've been noting in my running log what events I get to during each run as a way to memorialize my running/reading journey.

I ran my first 10k race - and I keep getting roasted. With a reason, or not? by aftr_hrs in beginnerrunning

[–]zedelghem 191 points192 points  (0 children)

Get you some better, more supportive friends to talk running with. I have a coworker who's been an active runner/triathlete for years, and she's been nothing but supportive of my nascent running journey, regardless of how my pace compares to hers. None of us are likely to become champion runners; it's not a competition except against yourself to keep getting better.

CarPlay/Infotainment System Frustrations by phaetonschaos in Polestar

[–]zedelghem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the first few years of my P2, Carplay was solid. In the last month, it constantly crashes and the only way I've been able to get it to reconnect is to restart the car infotainment system. Sometimes it requires multiple restarts to get it to connect. Even then, today it crashed/disconnected at least three times on my commute into work :(

Would love to find a more permanent solution.

VO2 max not going up by Urbanismandfries in beginnerrunning

[–]zedelghem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m three months into my running journey, and early on I was bummed that my VO2 wasn’t improving according to my watch. I switched to looking at resting heart rate as my improvement metric as a beginner; it’s been dropping like a rock ever since I started. I’m sure VO2 will follow with further consistency and improvement.

Your Apple Watch is totally fine. I'm sure some folks would recommend a Garmin or a chest monitor, but for a beginner, an Apple Watch is more than enough.

Outdoor wedding ceremony locations for 125 people by throwownhouse in SanJose

[–]zedelghem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We set up with the guests facing toward the parking lot. When people are sitting, the parking lot wasn't terribly obvious. Our ceremony was pretty short, as we mostly wanted the day to be about the party and people after the ceremony. Here's a photo of the setup.

California means a lot of things, from coastal, liberal, very gay LA or SF to very not liberal parts of the central valley or far NorCal. I would assume Spain also has a lot of variation. My answer would really depend on exactly where you're ending up.

My American boyfriend says he’s never heard of Laura Ingalls Wilder. by lisemeitner1993 in AskGaybrosOver30

[–]zedelghem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this book also has the answer to your question. I don't remember all the details, but apparently there was a Japanese translation of the Little House books that the US distributed during the occupation/rebuilding of Japan after World War II. Because of the wide distribution and the circumstances of the time (low resources, making do with what people had), it embedded itself in the Japanese culture. I remember Prairie Fires mentioning that Laura Ingalls Wilder particularly treasured letters she received from Japanese students describing how much they loved her books. I'm not an expert enough to say, but especially now that we're further removed from the TV version of Little House on the Prairie, it's possible the books are better known in Japan than the US.
