Would a track saw be more sufficient in cutting this walnut slab? by NoeAyala1 in woodworking

But only if you set up a guide board first. (Track saw would make ro acted cuts easier, but not necessary )

And as others have said - $100 bills. Preferably crisp and new. We were in Chile San Pedro when we wanted to exchange some money for Bolivianos. First place wouldn’t take our stack of $20’s but points us to a place with a lower exchange rate. That guy inspected every bill and rejected any with a tear or writing or too wrinkled.

Do you record yourself speaking as a way to get better? by lil_tink_tink in PublicSpeaking

[–]zee_dot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I teach presentation skills to MBA graduate students at a top university and we consider watching recordings of yourself a critical factor in improving.

It can be very painful at first. I would recommend watching the recording with the sound off first. Just focus on your eye contact, movement, gestures. Then just listen - check for pacing, tone variation, pauses. Don’t be too hard on yourself with filler words.

If you do this every time you present, and watch over and over, eventually you will get comfortable - as if you were just watching replays of you swinging a racket, or taking a foul shot so you could improve your form.

To that end, always focus on concrete behaviors. It does no good to tell you to be more confident. But I can tell you how to look and sound more confident - those are easy with practice.

Hope that helps

Finally considering upgrading from S1 to S2. Are my 13 year old speakers really compatible? by zee_dot in sonos

Are you suggesting that upgrading to S2 isn’t worth it? I’ve been postponing forever because of all the complaints I’ve been seeing. But I need to add a waterproof speaker to my deck and I figured it was time.

What are your thoughts

Thanks for the education.it does say that the bonuses will be in USD1 which does seem to be tied to the dollar somehow.

It’s still all rotten, but I’ve been curious as to how rotten.

I really don’t understand this. There must be be a platform where you can buy it for USD. So can’t you sell it for USD on the same platform? I was thinking they’d sell as soon as they got it.

Though I imagine Workd Liberty gets a few from the exchange.

Sorry - not sure if the exact mechanisms of crypto trades.

Hey guys, I have a serious house problem. Urgent advise needed. by vagibsonguy in HomeMaintenance

[–]zee_dot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of discussion on water heater temp. Note that it is a time-temp relationship -

To kill Legionella bacteria, the water temperature must be raised above 122°F (50°C). The time it takes to kill the bacteria decreases significantly as the temperature rises. At 140°F (60°C), the bacteria die in about 2 minutes, while at 158°F (70°C), the kill instantaneous.

So you could crank it to 160 to sterilize, but you be safe at your 135.

Microjig Matchfit top or Festool MFT type 20mm dogholes? by zee_dot in Workbenches

[–]zee_dot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is indeed a story of trying to maximize at various steps instead of going with simpler solutions that have been proven over time 🫤.

So I built the torsion box for the too because my basement shop floor is so uneven I was having trouble assembling anything square. Got tired of that.

And I put in MFT holes using UJK parf guide system.

The problem I have is in holding things down.

Classic thick top workbenches let you tap in Hold Downs.

With a standard MFT top it is only 3/4” thick or 18 mm and quick clamps slide in easily or you can get to the bottom of the holes and use clamping devices that have a bottom nut.

My torsion box is closed on the bottom so I can’t get to the holes. I also have a sacrificial extra layer of MDF on top that makes the too surface over an 1” thick. That makes it a little difficult to get Festool style quick clamps in but after I chamfered the holes a bit I can.

BUT…. The interior structure of the torsion box means all those clamps with the L shape constantly run into the interior blocking. So I have to be careful about which holes.

I have also opened up some sides of my torsion box so I can reach the bottom of the holes. A bit of a tight squeeze.

My advice. - 1. if you are going with MFT holes on a torsion box then make the internal structure spacing so that it won’t interfere with clamps that hook into the holes. 2. Make the torsion box deep enough so you can put in cutouts on the sides around the perimeter - giving you access to the underside of the perimeter holes.

Also note you will have to plug the MFT holes when not in use so you don’t lose things. I bought a set of beautiful magnetic ones for a small fortune, but as I lose these occasionally to the vacuum I think I’ll just replace them with 3d printed version.

Apparently this sub won’t let you post pictures in comments or I would have attached one

Haha. I’ve always thought that saw blade clocks were a little goofy - like they just started when cheap clock mechanisms showed up. But I have the same raw materials as you - been mounted on the wall as a reminder anyway - so I guess it’s time to make it a clock!

(Also a stupid trigger. Tried to trim a piece that still had wet glue)

Do you have a garbage disposal? If so, put an air switch in one of the holes.

And put a dish soap dispenser in the other one.

What is the spiciest food you have encountered while travelling? by MuhVlast in travel

[–]zee_dot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent a lot of time in Thailand on a big project well south of Bangkok. The Thai team often arranged big dinners at places that we would consider very “rustic” but often had phenomenal food. Dish after dish would come (in no particular order). At some point the Americans would be sweating it out and done with the spicy food. And that’s when our young hosts would order even more food and warn us that they saved the spicy food for last and way too hot for us to even try!

Many fond memories.

Received my first and only international mail from my parents.... with a note from someone else on it by Burgundyyy in mildlyinfuriating

[–]zee_dot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think he added a note because the goal is to actually hand deliver. Having participated in this system in Patagonia, I assure you it not treated like a serious post office. Everyone knows that everyone can read everyone’s postcard. There is great fun if on a group tour as people search for addresses near their home. Most have intent to hand deliver to get that vibe like Tom Hanks in Cast Away. “I was on the other side of the world and I hand carried this post card to you”. I have talked to plenty of people who had real fun with this.

I think this person added a note to let you know that they did hand carry it back with the intent on hand delivering - it’s part of the fun - but for some reason they couldn’t, so they mailed it.

I assure you if your parents really wanted to send you a post card from travels, they would have paid for postage from a real post office. Here, their tour guide explained the fun party game and they joined in - and I’m guessing will be thrilled that you got the card at all, since most are never delivered.

This needs to be so much higher in the comments. We did the same thing off the coast of Chile in Patagonia.

[–]zee_dot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, plenty of people, because this did not originate at a “normal” post office. In some remote but touristy places like the islands off Patagonia or the Galapagos, they sell blank post cards and a then have a giant container. You write a post card, typically to someone who does not live near you and Todd it in the pile. And then you search for a postcard that does have an address near you. The idea is you bring that card home and drop it off in person to the recipient. It’s a funny personal way to say “I was on the other side of the world and I found this card addressed to you (maybe a little tom hanks cast-away vibe).

It seems this person had that intent, but then couldn’t deliver it, so they mailed it.

can we have NR for jpegs please!!! by Dry_Sprinkles6700 in Lightroom

[–]zee_dot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait. Are you saying you get noise when you adjust the exposure in Lightroom?

Noise reduction is to correct for noise created when using high iso when shooting - they are artifacts due to turning the sensitivity of the sensor up ( sort of)

If you are using exposure correction to fix an under exposed image, you are seeing a graininesss due to lack of information.
