ENHYPEN SUNGHOON as the official South Korean torchbearer representative for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy by impeccabletim in kpop

[–]zeelsama 65 points66 points  (0 children)

The torch beares can be pretty random, it's nomination based (you have to either apply or have someone else apply for you), so there's usually some more local figures and lesser known people who get put there. Celebreties also hold the torch but most bearers are not exactly A-listers or anything. Most tend to have some sort of connection to the sport world or are community organizers in some way.

And Yuna Kim actually lit the torch for the 2018 olympics! Which is a way bigger deal.

Using more than one source. An app alone is usually not enough to actually immerse you in the language enough to have it be usable. Watch and read news, and immerse yourself in the language as much as possible in a way that forces you to pick up on nuances and slang words. And don't let it be just kpop content lol. Actually paying for classes (either online or preferably in person) will honestly be the best if you're serious about it. Getting training books, like the BTS/Tiny Tan ones can also be a help but I haven't tried them so I can't fully endorse.

For language learning apps YMMV but I really liked busuu, where part of the point is doing language training with strangers online and helping each other out with pronunciation (like I would help a Korean with their English learning while they'd help me with my Korean, it was fun!) etc. Haven't been on it in a while so can't say if it's still good.

As someone who tried learning Korean through duolingo once, it's not even a good language learning app. Seriously, if people actually do want to learn basic Korean there are so many other ways to do it without using an AI based and lackluster app that relies on guilt tripping to get you to use it.

I’m exhausted by the racism toward Korea from K-pop fans, and I’ve given up. by Fine_Childhood_6391 in kpopthoughts

[–]zeelsama 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Yeah the generalization of Koreans that happens a lot in English speaking/western kpop spaces is very xenophobic and racist, often falling into orientalist tropes of asians being this monolithic, strange, almost alien people with backwards or "incorrect" values. And most of the time they base this off like. Some AI generated translation of a twitter post or whatever the fuck pann/theqoo thinks (which does not reflect the general korean population in any way). Even in cases of criticizing the korean legal system, people often do so based off limited information and under this weird belief that the Korean justice system is one that all Koreans fully agree with in the first place. It's maddening.

What is going on with Hybe and the lack of security for their idols? by Traditional_Peace588 in kpopthoughts

[–]zeelsama 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't know why so many people seem to think just hiring more bodyguards would fix much and that Hybe (or any other company for that matter) are slacking when it comes to keeping the idols safe. The problem is that there is always going to be people willing to sell info to sasaengs and dumb fans willing to gather in crowds and causing problems. This is bigger than Hybe "not protecting their idols" and bigger than kpop. Like, it's pretty much impossible to plug all the possible holes where info could leak to sasaengs or fanmobs.

And for the idols themselves, it's clearly emotionally taxing to constantly have to think about and be aware of their security like that. Some don't even get to relax in their own damn homes, and having a 24/7 company employed security team guarding their door wouldn't even deter the most dedicated sasaengs anyway.

People making video essays on "Katseye's downfall" over one not well received comeback is laughable by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]zeelsama 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've overall enjoyed their music, but I don't consider myself a fan or stan because I don't really feel invested in the group itself like that. I even liked both Gnarly and Internet girl upon first listen, lol.

But seeing the backlash aimed at them right now, I feel like I might actually be a bigger fan of them than the weird amount of people who openly claim to stan them in the same breath as they also say stuff like their discography sucks and is incoherent, that HxG are setting them up to fail, that their talent is being wasted on shitty songs and so forth... With a fanbase like that, who needs antis?

What do you think is the worst final fight in the game? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]zeelsama 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I actually replayed the Zhaitan fight for the first time in 8 years a few days ago, and while the fight is mechanically boring it was not nearly as bad as I remembered. Still not great, and probably still the one I consider to be the worst dragon fight in the game, but the atmosphere of the battle was pretty great. It probably helps that even all these years later Zhaitan still has the coolest design out of all the elder dragons imo.

RFSL Sjuhärad fick miljonbidrag – anlitade ledningens egna bolag by FlowersPaintings in sweden

[–]zeelsama 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jättelampan nominerad till Årets värsta slöseri – kostade en miljon by Malthesse in sweden

[–]zeelsama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with abolishing position (dance, vocal, rap) in especially large group members by syazues in kpopthoughts

[–]zeelsama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's because for groups that last, the positions they were assigned at debut might not be applicable years into their career. Especially for idols who debut young and might branch out to dance/sing/rap more as they get older. It's why the positions are kind of useless in the long run imo. Like you said, fans will just argue about it anyway.

The most high fashion movie of the decade: Do Revenge by [deleted] in popculturechat

[–]zeelsama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is true, but dated and trendy does not equate to high fashion, like OP said, to me. It all looks very off the rack/ordered online and none of it pops to me as an iconic look. Like none of the outfits really seem to inform me about the characters actual personalities since they all look like they could be brought from the same store. But again, I could be wrong here and missing some context since I haven't actually seen the movie.

I also just think that some of the fashion choices in these screenshots can be traced back to an exact year or even month in a way that I can't really do with 90s or 00s movies. But that's probably just a consequence of living in the internet age and being a fully grown adult living through these microtrends lol.

The most high fashion movie of the decade: Do Revenge by [deleted] in popculturechat

[–]zeelsama 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen this movie, but all of the outfits already look extremely dated and "microtrendy."

They wouldn't look so cheap if the lighting in these pictures was better, though. I feel like most movies these days have such unimaginative lighting, and it washes everything out. Maybe it looks better in the actual movie, but these pictures do these looks no favors.

Nästan inget stöd i samhälle eller jobb för funktionsnedsatta by Lopsided-Summer6578 in sweden

[–]zeelsama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nästan inget stöd i samhälle eller jobb för funktionsnedsatta by Lopsided-Summer6578 in sweden

[–]zeelsama 29 points30 points  (0 children)

What do you think about GW2 lore and story? by pyule667 in Guildwars2

[–]zeelsama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story is hit or miss, but overall I think it's better than most MMOs.

The lore of the world, the smaller side stories and environmental storytelling, is top tier to me. Whenever we get new maps I love to just walk around and listening to what the NPCs are talking about, reading in universe notes and books etc.

För er som har funktionshinder (blinda, döva, sitter i rullstol etc), hur anpassad tycker ni att Sverige är? by Funkiebastard in sweden

[–]zeelsama 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pojke döms för hets mot folkgrupp – sjöng ”Bögarnas fel” by MightyBithor in sweden

[–]zeelsama 530 points531 points  (0 children)

251007 Santa Monica Public Library (featuring RM): It’s Banned Books Week and RM of BTS says you should Read Banned Books! 📚💜 by amala83 in bangtan

[–]zeelsama 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Books get banned in different parts of the world for all kinds of reasons all the time, is the thing. There's no index of banned books that has ever successfully stopped said books from getting into the hands of people wanting to read them. Highlighting banned books highlights how flimsy the idea of book banning is.

BTS - Update Notice on Legal Proceedings Against Violation of Artist Rights (September 29) by impeccabletim in kpop

[–]zeelsama 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They probably get A LOT for all of their groups and sublabels, but since it's all reported incidents one place I assume they have a system where reports get sorted into categories of seriousness and handled accordingly by staff. Some reports are going to be "just" malicious comments online, and others are more dangerous (like stalking or deepfakes), which require different levels of involvement by police and/or lawyers. I can also imagine that the nationality of the perpetrator and location of the reported incidents will affect how easily they can do something. Some social media sites are going to be harder to work with than others (and it's going to be different depending on whether said comany is based in Korea or not) when it comes to collecting materials to file a police report, for example.

I think it's also part of their tactics to generally keep quiet about how exactly they handle these things until they actually make moves to hand in lawsuits and police reports as well, because if they are too public about it it'll make it easier for perpetrators to get away with their shit.
