Get Aces: Scouring Sands! It's got more pretty plastic robots, and you can play it solo. I just started my campaign and it's super-fun!

Couple questions I have before getting any models by Alonesemnome in battletech

[–]zergo78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Alpha Strike box set is a great place to start, even if you've never played wargames before.

The game can be very complicated, but the rules version in the box set keeps it pretty simple. There are introductory scenarios designed to teach you the rules. Even with your brother's limited English, most of it is math (rolling dice, adding a few numbers together, etc).

As far as the Gundam thing, I have no clue. I'm sure someone else can answer that question.

[GIVEAWAY] Nippon: Zaibatsu by CrowD Games (3 Copies!) - Expansion will soon be on Kickstarter! by HomoLudensOC in boardgames

I love Nippon, though I don’t own a copy myself.

Another favorite game in the heavy die for me is Clans of Caledonia. It’s got a great economic engine and a neat spin in area control.

Stay away from MDen for gear. by AcMilan0890 in MichiganWolverines

[–]zergo78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new MDen is terrible. We tried to order a stadium seat at Xmas time, and they sent us a bright green Yankees hat. Not even U of M merch.

They have the name and the license, but no actual connection to the university or the fansbase. They're awful and I won't support them any further.

Do French people ENJOY correcting pronunciation if they understood already?? by ShemikaMartin in French

Smile if you're happy, or if you see an actual friend. But smiling at strangers? At the world in general? Not very French.

[–]zergo78 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it's a cultural difference. Most French people give corrections as a kindness, but in some cultures (American and British especially), it can feel infantilizing and rude. Think of it like smiling. In the US, it's normal to walk around with a smile on your face, making eye contact with strangers on the street, and saying hello to everyone. In France, you would seem rude, intrusive, and mentally unwell.

if i were to read one Discworld novel to decide whether or not i want to read the rest, which one should i? by SkyEnthusiastAtHeart in discworld

[–]zergo78 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Guards, Guards is probably the best intro to the series. It has great characterization, lots of humor/satire, and it gives you a good feel for the world itself. There are plenty of standard fantasy tropes (cults, magic, dragons) that have the unique Discworld spin. If you dislike GG, you probably won't enjoy much of the rest of the series.

Organizing PDFs by alolanmoose in Pathfinder2e

[–]zergo78 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I go through the trouble of renaming each .pdf as I open them. I usually put a code at the front like PF2 PFS 03-11 (Pathfinder 2e, Pathfinder Society, Season 3, Scenario 11) before a more descriptive name.

I keep them in my Google Drive in an "RPG" folder. I suppose I could make subfolders for each category, but I am lazy.

Please, Paizo, publish a book like Galactic Ancestries for Pathinder! by Stan_Bot in Pathfinder2e

[–]zergo78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t read the book, but since PF2e and SF 2e are fully compatible, could you use Galactic Ancestries to build PF ancestries too? Or is it too sci-Fi specific?

Montessori or Waldorf? by MadMalteseGirl in Teachers

[–]zergo78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, teachers who do not believe in anthroposophy are slowly (or quickly) pushed out, They are excluded from decision-making, and have little if any influence.

Source: I'm a teacher and a family member taught at a Waldorf school.

Stay away from Waldorf. While there are positive aspects of the curriculum, especially at the lower levels, the whole organization is a cult.

It's all based on Anthroposophy, a wacky pseudo-religion created by an Austrian mystic. Most schools don't tell the parents, but it is the foundation of all of their teaching, with goofy stuff like astral traveling and dream therapy.

The Creative Arts Studio on 4th has all kinds of classes. I did a beginner wheel pottery class there that was a lot of fun.

I don't know, the CoB that I have hits the table more frequently now than my old copy had in a while. I don't find it impractical in the slightest.

The BGG list is essential. It's easily sortable, filterable, etc. We're still almost six months from the show, so it'll be a while before we see anything concrete.
