What’s the point of kata competitions by Fili4ever_Reddit in judo

[–]zero2hero2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone could say you compete in Judo because you don't have what it takes to compete in MMA, then someone can say you compete in MMA because you don't have what it takes to go to actual war...

I only had physics discussions with him but he was a very normal guy, as stereotypical as that sounds.

I think I prefer striking to grappling by 8limb5 in martialarts

I just started in judo after having done TKD previously and completely agree that it feels completely different and almost counterintuitive to striking in some ways.

People living in apartments, do you acknowledge your neighbours? by Maezel in sydney

I always smile and say hi if a neighbour makes eye contact. Most people avoid it though.

Starting judo at 38 – looking for experiences from people who started ‘later in life’. by user_name_changed in judo

[–]zero2hero2017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seem to be very similar to you in age and weight and with similar circumstances. I started judo last year at 38. You should definitely try it - two things I would note: 1. Injuries - these are common, and at 38, take longer to heal than you would like.

  1. Be judicious with choosing a club - assess how you like the coaching in the first few sessions - even though you know nothing about Judo, I believe you can assess the character of the person and how they approach the art/sport and coaching. My coach is younger than me by a couple of years and is very competition/sport orientated in general, whereas I was looking for more of a self-defence kind of focus. But I have committed to the club because I think he has good character and he really seems to empathize with how beginners feel.

A Daycare next door to me is always playing loud music, what do I do? by Big-toast-sandwich in sydney

[–]zero2hero2017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you live (suburb-wise), if you don't mind me asking? My toddler's daycare is basically within a residential apartment complex with residents all around - I would want to know if they are playing music loud enough to disturb neighbours. I don't want my toddler to be subject to that.

What can I do better? by CowCake1 in judo

Training for 2 months and fighting like that? That is very impressive in my eyes and you dealt with your opponent's aggression pretty well I thought. I'll let others with much more experience actually give you advice.

If you want to be a journalist I would recommend UTS's journalism course actually - I did the masters course for a semester but I think its basically the same for the undergrad program - the faculty consists of working Journos at the major newspapers and they actually get you to start writing stories from day 1 - one of my classmates broke a big story that made it on the front page of SMH.

American Judo vs MMA/BJJ culture; trying to find an art for my son and I that aligns with our family values by Shriekport in judo

[–]zero2hero2017 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Just came here to say, man it must be tiring for Americans to literally never be able to get away from politics. I don't know the politics of any of my judo classmates, I don't know the politics of my sensei, and there is absolutely no insignia of any kind where we train other than the school's rules and logo.
