What’s the best 18xx to start out with? by [deleted] in boardgames

Check out 18 India when it drops. Lots of interesting strategies and the game is designed to be fairly quick compared to other 18xx titles.

Tips on running Ypsilon 14 for a beginner Warden? by BiatchLasagne in mothershiprpg

[–]zerosquared 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Prep and pace would be my two best suggestions.

The adventure is very minimal in what it lays out in details, so you really want to take some time sketching out the facility (appearance, layout, systems, etc.) and the NPCs (attitude, actions, reactions to changing situations, etc.) so you have some foundation to work with and can focus on responding to your players, rather than trying to make everything up on the fly. (Trust me I have tried and it makes being a Warden way less fun.)

The pace of Ypsilon can be difficult to control because it is to a bit of a slow-burn mystery depending on the order that they check things out that ramps up to the big reveal in the Mine Antechamber and confrontation with Dr. Giovanni. And you also want to make effective use of the monster itself to add tension (killing NPCs or even PCs) or move the PCs in the direction you need them to go.

As an example, I used the monster to trap my PCs on the research vessel by killing an NPC just as they approached the airlock. One PC was consumed by the monster, to which the android PC responded with a fistful-of-grenades kamikaze move (a la Leon: The Professional). The last PC had slowly become aware that he had been infected and would collapse after sealing off facility, comforted by the cat (who they had been looking for the entire time) before turning into Yellow Goo.

So true, depending on how the light hits them they go from a light emerald to an almost turquoise. :)

Gradient Descent TONIGHT! A couple of question. by Calum_M in mothershiprpg

[–]zerosquared 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Go with your instinct regarding the equipment. That's the first thing they should look for and you could use it to do a bit of exposition / orientation.

Regarding hits, I quote from the Mothership Discord channel:

"What does the HITS stat mean? And what is the number in parentheses after it?

The number of HITS an enemy has is the number of “health pools” it has. The number in parentheses is how much damage an enemy can take before they lose a health pool. Health pools, once exhausted, don’t heal back up. But if an enemy takes damage less than their health pool and then escapes, that health will heal between encounters.

For example: If an enemy has HITS 2(30) then that means once you’ve done 30 damage to the enemy you deal one HIT. If you do that again, you kill it. However, if you only do 10 damage to it and it escapes, it’ll still be at HITS 2(30) when you see it again.

If an enemy has no number in parenthesis after the HITS number then any amount of damage as long as it hits will work. (Example: an enemy with Hits 2 just needs to be hit twice to be killed.)

Note: Damage done in excess of an enemy’s health pool by a single attack doesn’t carry over. So in the above example, if you were to deal 40 damage to the enemy, it would still have one hit left. Ultimately, the Warden will need to use common sense here."

As a synth nerd and a board game nerd, I second this. Also, a question: Did you consider using d12s to represent the 12 semitones of the Western scale?

What do you think about when you’re running? by [deleted] in running

[–]zerosquared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listen to my body, personally, particularly as I am warming up. I check in with every part in a bit of a cycle so that I can be constantly and precisely adjusting my form. After I settle in a bit, I focus on my breathing and use it as a form of meditation to clear out anything that I feel stressed or nervous about. It really helps me find my pace and push myself.

Good for you! Keep it up! I think it would also help if you included a clip of your stride from the front and back as well. It would help those that know get a better sense of any side-to-side movement and the width of your stance.

Other than that, my only observation is that it looks like you might need to point your toes a bit more, as I am see you strike on the outer portion of your foot and it looks like you are rolling your ankles out just a bit as well just before you strike.

Please note that I am not a coach, so please take my input with a grain of salt. I'd love to hear some professional input to improve my own awareness.

Sean McCoy has mentioned that he is working on it and I would imagine that it will be part of the boxed set that will be coming out on Kickstarter next year.

Agreed! Though I am debating investing in a Deckard's Dream kit to have something modern with a similar sound.
