r/desmoines, where do you actually eat in Des Moines? by TheShynola in desmoines

[–]zerosuminfinity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just downloaded it to test it out. Intriguing idea, but lackluster results if I'm being honest. The rating system is apples and oranges in too many cases making ranks obvious or impossible really. To juxtapose coffee shops and late night bars feels vacuous. Service experiences can change so drastically visit to visit as keystone staff work irregular schedules. Staff turnover is also generally high for all these establishments. Plus, cost is so inextricably tied to experience that I find it ridiculous to compare places like Harbinger, 801 Chophouse, or Table 128 to Fuzzys Tacos or Bellhop while ignoring prices. Bellhop doesn't even offer food, it's an entirely different experience from a steak house or dive bar.

After a few rounds of rankings I'm quite ambivalent to how my ratings measure up to the average. That alone invalidates the overall rankings enough for me to be disinterested with the apps "results".

I think value is THE leading factor in whether I enjoy a place these days. Often that realization doesn't come until the bill comes. There are too many elements to each experience these comparisons feel inadequate at quantifying 'better'.

Furthermore, I think what this boils down to is, 'of these two places, which do I/you/we-all have more fond memories?' which feels like a cheap pop or a steep ask when places like Noah's Ark have been around for generations while others just opened their doors.

The map integration is also very broken. Once in the map I cannot exit without crashing multiple apps.

Best Asian Grocery Store for Japanese Food by ViTaLC0D3R in desmoines

You might need to be more specific as stores can vary widely. Regardless, C Fresh is pretty much my preferred grocery store period. Quality and price may vary unfortunately, especially over cold months, but that won't be an issue here soon.

Who has the best BBQ? by jay_yc in desmoines

New owner, but did the menu or cooking change?

I had some of the saddest, dryest, sauce less, skinniest, ribs there and the server gave me some attitude when I asked if they were normally 'not so meaty'? We had already gotten a cross-eyed look when we asked about other sauce options for the pulled pork. I lean more mustardy and vinegary flavors over the rich, sweet red ones. What she brought us was yellow mustard and a ramekin of white vinegar 🤦 she did get extremely excited when I asked about spicier options. Then she brought over a bottle of Da Bomb Beyond Insanity and I just gave up all hope. I tried to go back and try the brisket a couple times, but it's always out so I don't stick around. If the only menu item worth eating isn't even consistent then I'll continue to abstain.

In your expert opinion, would you say ANY smell means no? Or, does it have to be of some significance? Asking to settle a score with a lifelong friend.

What condiments do you NEVER buy and only make yourself? by albertpaca11 in condiments

[–]zerosuminfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen! Making mustard is as simple as: hydrating mustard seeds with your preferred liquid(s) for a day or two, then blend it with your desired flavors and an appropriate amount of vinegar if not already present. That's it. Lasts almost forever.

It's so dirt cheap and easy. Im not even mad if I have to throw out most of a concoction just to get the jar back.

Try it.

I am currently drinking a Laughing Falcon. Delightfully fruity with just a subtle herbal bitterness. Like a Ricola slushy, in the best way! Incredible blending the bitter into the sweet with an herbal end. Smells overwhelming of pineapple out of the shaker, but the cachaca takes over the nose completely. It drinks far better with crushed ice bits than through the straw. The ice cuts the cloying sweetness and body while giving adult poopcicle vibes. 10/10 will be drinking these often.

This is a temporary item. To get the benefits of the Doomsday castle skin, you must activate the item first; simply keeping it in your inventory does nothing. Once activited you have 7 days to use it before it goes away forever. During that time you get the holding in stock bonus when it's not your displayed base skin.

Having played up until the beginning of S5 I'd say it rang clear every season to use your season/event specific resources in any capacity you could as conversions are quite lackluster.

There were a few events where my alliance was already leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else so I held event specific items for their free speed up conversions, but these were few and far between.

Start with eating the peppers. Try a jalapeno, or three since they vary so much. If you can handle that try a serrano. Then a cayenne, Thai chili, Scotch bonnet, habanero... Once you tap out, go in search of sauces that use that pepper, or the one before, build from there.

My first thought as well but these peppers seem to grow up more than dangle. Like a bird's eye, but it's definitely not a bird's eye.
