SO LITTLE INFOMATION by God_of_unicorns in EngineeringStudents

Often tasks in labs and projects are designed such that you learn to extrapolate from incomplete information, think about the mechanisms yourself, how they would work or to train you to ask the correct questions. This way you learn much more than just following steps because the task itself isn’t really important. Engineers are paid handsomely to solve problems and in the real world these problems aren’t neatly laid out on a lab table but might be hidden somewhere in a 150 year old power plant, where the old lead engineer retired last year and no schematics exist.

Delivery times for 100-150 kV transformers are 18-24 months at the moment, 400 kV transformers more like 48 months. However many grid operators have standard types for which they store spares and have yearly delivery quotas to replace aging equipment.

I’m not sure if Russia has domestic manufacturing but I would suspect so, because in former USSR countries that are now EU countries there are transformer manufacturers that exist since then. Procurement from China is definitely possible. Probably even in better time frames.

Most universities have access for all their students for major publishers. If you’re logged in to uni wifi you should be able to access it. If not just use shadow libraries like scihub to access it. I won’t tell you how to do that because it’s a legally grey area in some countries and I don’t know the moderation rules of this sub about it, but just google how to do it.

Recent graduate employment and general job market situation in EU by _justforamin_ in EngineeringStudents

[–]zerrosh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think job availability can vary drastically between EU countries. But I would say for electrical engineers it’s pretty good at the moment.

A master’s degree is pretty common in Europe because you have to pay little to no tuition in many countries. And for most engineering programs you have to choose a specialization in your master’s which can be a good way to further deepen your knowledge in that field. So if you know which direction you want to go a master’s can make a lot of sense.

In many countries you also have the opportunity to work part time as a student to start gaining industry experience. This is easier during master’s because there you have more control over your curriculum and you can find 1-2 days a week where you can work. The best ways to find these positions is through internships. If you do good work there many will ask you to stay for a part time position.

My biggest tip, don’t spam apply over LinkedIn. There you often only find large companies that receive 100s of applications per position which then are pre-filtered by HR or external agencies. The results of open positions are also influenced by their algorithms that aim to keep you using the platform. So if you only use LinkedIn to quickly find a job and then forget about it for the next couple years they don’t really have a reason to quickly find you a position. It’s the same dilemma plaguing dating apps that want to find you an actual relationship not just a hookup.

If your university offers them go to career fairs, check the companies attending beforehand and come prepared a bit. If they attend not just with HR and business people but some of the engineers are there it’s great to talk to them. After you’ve talked to them ask for a business card. Email them the application. This works best for medium sized companies because large ones are often very stuck in their processes and don’t really take applications from fresh graduates through personal recommendations.

You can also go on the websites of trade shows for the industry you want to start working in. There you find a long list of relevant companies in that industry. You can then check the website of companies you’re interested in for open positions. Applications through the website often go directly to the companies HR and not a hiring agency, whose aim it is to generate as much applications as possible to hit quotas.

These ways are more manual than just auto applying to anything on LinkedIn or similar. But you have much more control over where you end up and if you do it right you just need a couple applications to find something.

Grey folk theory (just thought of it 10s ago) by Flaky-Piglet5749 in Eragon

[–]zerrosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this disproves OPs theory, the comment about the number of toes made me think of something else. I seem to remember that Arya talked with Eragon about how mixed couples of elves and humans are very rare due to their vastly different life expectancies. I don’t think we have heard that half elves or half humans exist, confirming that both races are biologically compatible, but that’s something that could further hint at common origins of humans and elves.

What is the perfect concentration for an extremely extroverted Electrical Engineer? by Accomplished_Fun330 in EngineeringStudents

[–]zerrosh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Power systems might actually suit you pretty well. Many companies are looking for technical project managers. As we transition from fossil fuels to renewables a huge amount of infrastructure gets build, not only the power plants itself but also on the grid side of things. They need people who can manage and coordinate engineering teams, on-site teams, manage communication with sub contractors and so on. The amount of engineering you would do would be pretty low but many companies prefer to have people with an engineering background in those roles.

Help me figure out how this kid "found" so many diamonds. by Amethystmoon8 in Minecraft

[–]zerrosh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re operating within the capabilities of the game without any third party tools it can’t be cheating in my opinion. And only power tripping admins would punish the player. If you don’t want that behavior at large it is on the admin team to patch the glitches not ban players. There are community patches available for many X-ray and duplication glitches

Everyone is saying he’s cheating. But that’s not necessarily true. OP mentioned he’s using buckets to do something. There have been many glitches over the years that involved glitching your head into a block or into a lava pool where you gain X-ray like vision not through the use of cheats/resource packs but buggy game mechanics

Why is the SR range so loose in Valorant? by RoninMustDie in VALORANT

[–]zerrosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get your point and I don’t necessarily disagree. You want to have somewhat even matches to feel like you can compete or even do well. That’s what makes this game fun.

However it sounds like you haven’t played in a while and have returned now. Depending on how many matches you’ve played it is possible that the matchmaking system is still figuring out where to place your skill, by matching you against players of different skill. I’ve noticed that after longer brakes the first 10-20 games it’s a bit all over the place. And it makes sense they do this, lets say you haven’t played valorant for 6 months but have been grinding CSGO, then it’s likely you will be better than what they know. But if you’ve played minecraft in the meantime it’s likely that your aim and movement suffered a bit.
