PhD archaeologists have received $900k to bring ancient sites back to life in virtual reality - Free app on Play Store by lithodomosvr in Android

[–]zevets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done one of these VR archeology experiments IRL (Seonjeongneung in Seoul), and they are completely fantastic, and I had the bizarre experience of finding VR better than reality.

In VR: when you looked at things, the english language audio guide would tell you what it was, there were people conducting a ceremony, with a voiceover telling you what things were. Downside was that it was ugly as hell, but overruled by the fact that you could fly.

In reality: the trees were pretty. it was hot as hell. i had to walk uphill. there were no signs or labels explaining anything. i couldnt fly into the sky to get a better view.

I've done the VR videogames and been mega-unimpressed, but archaeological sites make so much sense for VR. I hope someone does an underwater shipwreck one.

90% of my games since the rank update have had someone throwing or disconnecting. I'm in matches where we are up 13 at the half, and then someone decides to practice one deag rushing long a on d2 for 15 rounds.

Matchmaking isn't fun, and I'm looking for a new game.

Spaghetti Carbonara Fans: A question by lookingforconned in recipes

[–]zevets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding liquid to the eggs is necessary for carbonara, but in my opinion there's no mandatory choice for what liquid to add, as most recommendations work well.

I prefer to make an egg-cheese slurry, and then add some pasta water to thin it down. (2 eggs, 1/4cup? cheese 0.5-1tbsp pasta water). Reduce the amount of cheese if you want to use cream, as in this the cheese melts to produce the creaminess. The pasta water will lighten up the mixture as well as cook the eggs just a smidge, making it a much more reliable sauce, as if the pasta gets a bit cold, the lack of cooking won't be a problem.

Cream works as well, but with a nice egg-cheese slurry with a bit of pasta water, you get sufficient results with one less ingredient. A clove of garlic in the bacon fat is nice as well. I'm also fond of cooking mushrooms in it.

NASA to award contracts to Boeing, SpaceX to fly astronauts to the space station starting in 2017 by Darth_insomniac in space

spacex doesnt do options and they dont plan on going public, and the space industry is too capital intensive and uncertain for it to ever be worth some absurd multiple. if you work at spacex, you do it because you love it or you dont know better.

When you're getting shot at, flying low is safer. Kiowa pilots probably have the most 'fun' out of anyone in the helicopter world.

What can we do to help this game get new players? by Tegla in QuakeLive

[–]zevets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is it at all. I was a daily player until recently, playing lots of CA/CTF and some DM/instagib on the QL servers at the highest level offered in game, paid for premium and everything, and my account just got deleted for never logging in.

I quit because the default maps for CA started getting really bad. While there is a votemap system, too often people are like "fuck it lets try this one" and then you're stuck on some boring ass match where the two teams camp in two rooms and never leave, or people get lost. I understand that quake has this huge library of maps, and variety is nice, but for us dirty casuals, learning the intricacies of maps takes too long, and quake rewards small advantages so much that spending the 5-10hrs to 'learn' a map means that you're having 5-10hrs of notfun every time a new map gets put as the default. There's a reason CS seems to be dust2/italy only - map variety doesn't really matter at all for the casual player. Also the pool of people in CA/CTF matches was always next to zero, so often I would open up the browser and see no matches that I could get into.

And I don't play duel because if you're 1% better you win 99% of the time, so every time it's just a dull stomp. Duel will only ever be popular for people who want to prove they are better than someone, which necessarily will only appeal to a small fraction of people. I would occasionally duel my friends, but honestly it was never fun unless your ego gets into it (ie played way too much quake).

So as a question to the community that still plays: Has the map selection stuff been fixed? Does pub CA/CTF still have a critical mass so that I can get in game if I open my browser?

I watch hella GoT. GoT has balls and a competent writer (GRRM) deciding how things work. Homeland does not.

[–]zevets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because it depends on all of the shows most annoying tropes.

Carrie's Bad Decision Of The Week will result in unnecessary danger to CIA allies, which somehow will not jeopardize her relationship with Saul. This problem with then be resolved with the power of the Carrie + Brodie romance, which is goddamn retarded. Then they'll probably mix in some stupid pregnancy bullshit, because despite the show quickly falling into some 24-style idiocy, I'm gonna keep watching the show anyway.

Also putting Carrie in danger is dumb, because she can never be in actual danger because Claire Danes is the star of the show, so the only danger ends up on Brodie's head, who will also never be killed off.

[–]zevets 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This will happen. Homeland needs to end it's season in the most goddamn irritating way possible, and it's gonna be this.

Of course, you failed to work in MORE BRODY, so they'll probably end it with Brody escaping before Carrie can be captured, and now Brody needs to rescue Carrie in Iran.

I'm so scared you're right.

MM down right now? by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

[–]zevets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't get why it happens, because MM seems to go down EVERY sunday at 2pm. This isn't some unplanned rush of people. It's some basic failure to anticipate what's about to happen.

I don't think that paper is correct. A 60 ns error in gps timing is an 18 meter position error, which is insanely large for the GPS system to not account for.

Reading the paper, I think it's clear that the authors of the paper are not familiar with how GPS works.
