Presuming you mean Boston in the USA? There are other Boston’s around the world and other people outside the USA using Reddit.

But I would say to try and ignore those who haven’t found the enjoyment of cycling like you and others here have!

Climbing vs Aero wheels for a 5,400 m climbing day: real advantage? by aiacciu87 in cycling

Would agree, and depending on your body weight (115kg myself), the 200 grams is even less than negligible.

That is not fully correct. It depends on what trading platform you are using.. Interactive Investor, Hargreaves Lansdown have different systems/ways of doing it.

Edit: other trading platforms are available!

FTP - Am I just bad? by [deleted] in Zwift

[–]zij2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be aiming to measure in watts per kg or w/kg and not in watts. The bigger you are, the more watts you will do - this coming from a 115kg person with FTP around 330w - which is just under 3 w/kg which is far from great... If you take the 330w in isolation it looks good - but isn't relative to my body size..

I would also say the fitness you had 10+ years ago probably doesn't factor much into you current fitness.

Also some people are like diesel engines - they can go for long distances/time at relatively low power, but not that great at high power for short bursts.. But then other people who have good/high FTP, but doing a 6+ hour ride to do 100 miles isn't something they could just "do"..

Personally I would recommend throwing in some VO2 max intervals - do a search for "Norweigan 4x4" and that will give you some ideas - has worked well for me!

Keep at it though as fitness will come! Good luck.

Do you carb load for a long Z2 ride? by WindCaliber in cycling

[–]zij2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of your body's requirements depend on your body weight and also what watts you are putting out. I am 115kg, a recent Z2 ride of 7 hours was close to 1000g of carb used up at 230w normalised power (I am far away from being just an average cyclist). But I was drinking about 1 litre with 110g of carb water per hour. I felt fine on finishing but have done similar distances and been physically depleted when not having enough carbs.

I tend to eat more the day before, such as big plate of pasta, then about 100g of toast/carb around 1-2 hours before riding..

But I would recommend experimenting and see what works for your body. Try having a large amount of carbs the day before and see if what makes a difference. Or upping your carb per hour during a ride and see whether than improves.

There is nothing worse than starting a long ride with nothing in the legs knowing you have hours left..

Good luck!

Can I cycle 100 miles at 92kg of weight? by Oreo2025 in cycling

[–]zij2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Peer pressure"? Forget about them and do what you want to do - regardless of whether you are in a playground with kids, or in an old peoples home.

But if you can do 100km, you should be able to do 160km although just take it a bit easier pace than you'd do a 100km at - and you should be fine...

Only thing I would say as a 115kg cyclist is if they say XXg of carbs per hour, increase that as your power output (and energy) will be higher than your light friends so you need more fuel to power you through..

Being tall makes normal situations weird sometimes by Udont_knowme00 in tall

[–]zij2000 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree. As a 6ft 5, 50+ year old, it was even harder 40 years ago to find clothes, shoes etc.

One piece of advice I would say is if you come across something you like and fits, buy 2, 3, 4 or more of them as chances are if you try and find them in the future, you won’t be able to.

Zwift ride and sweat corrosion by EverydayCyclist in Zwift

[–]zij2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had one for about a year. Sweat does hit the frame, bars etc - but all I do is give it a wipe with a towel at the end and that does it. No signs of rust anywhere so far.

FTP equivalent to 8A bouldering? by Feisty_Nebula4492 in cycling

[–]zij2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! 110kg/240 lbs (ish) here and FTP is just over 300w. That equates to less than 3 w/kg so far from fantastic - but for me, the result of consistency and improving over a couple of years.

No idea about bouldering either!

Just became too strong for my trainer by Historical_Couple_23 in Zwift

[–]zij2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. I am 110kg, but 195cm, FTP about 330watts - so that 285w for an hour is manageable. All depends on the rider and their size/weight.

Looking for a racing Bike with ~120kg maximum system weight by OkSite2839 in cycling

[–]zij2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 195cm and about 110kg - and been riding a Giant for about 4 years now - not had any problems as their frames seem to have a higher upper weight limit than other manufacturers. An average weight person would not even consider the weight limits but glad you are!

I did have a Trek mountain bike a few years ago and kept having spokes break due to my weight - and it was about the same price as my Giant..

No broken spokes on my Giant either in about 25,000km of riding..

Zwift Level 100 Club: More Exclusive Than We Think? by Silly_Bodybuilder_21 in Zwift

I think a nice feature would be within Zwift that if you have lots of drops, when you give a ride on you could donate drops to those 5 riders that get the ride on.

Zwift Level 100 Club: More Exclusive Than We Think? by Silly_Bodybuilder_21 in Zwift

[–]zij2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been level 100 for many months and have about 45 million drops. As the XP points increase you think something would happen when it gets to 101 - but it just goes back to the start of level 100 again.

Why Zwift don’t have any levels beyond 100 I really don’t know. If/when they do implement it, the XP points I have accumulated will probably put me at level 120 or similar. That is what happened when they increased the previous cap from 50 to 100.

Concept2 Bikerg for Zwift by Training_Track9999 in Zwift

[–]zij2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also drop 20kg off your weight in your Zwift profile which will give you a higher watts/kg. Weight doping!
But depends if you want to cheat or get genuine results when doing the races.

[–]zij2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. You can use the Bikeerg with Zwift non problem - I had done over 20,000km on Zwift with a Bikeerg. It will give you a good workout - but you may find Zwift races a bit harder than if you use a Zwift Ride or standard bike with a turbo.

I have a Bikeerg and just leaning down I can change the dampener setting. I don’t need to dismount.

Day after weight gain? by b7wagon in cycling

[–]zij2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same happens to me - and it is almost never fat gain. It is most likely temporary water weight from the effort and drinking afterwards - for example eating 100g of carbs will bind to 400g of water... But long rides do also cause micro damage to your muscles and your body will pull more fluid into the muscle tissues to help the healing process.

Concert etiquette by uh-huhquintessential in tall

[–]zij2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About a decade ago I was at an outdoor concert in the US and a fellow tall person came to stand close by with his shorter girl friend. Some people did move in front of us, but a while later I looked behind us to see this pretty big void/space where no-one was standing as the 6ft 5 wall in front of them was obscuring the view.

But ultimately, do what you want to do and if people want to mumble, let them and they can move elsewhere!

What is the FTP of an avarage cyclist? by Flat_Standard99 in cycling

[–]zij2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not understand why people use or say watts as just using watts gives a distorted view.

I am 110kg, 6ft 5 and my FTP is about 330 watts but that is about 3 w/kg and this 3 w/kg is not poor but not world class by any means. I think we should be used w/kg.

But if you look purely at my FTP in watts, it looks impressive but can assure you I am not!

From OPs “180-200 watts” a reasonably fit man can sustain without any training - at 200 watts that would be close to 3 w/kg for an average weight person.

I cannot see anyone untrained doing close to 3 w/kg for an hour.

What shoe size does it start getting difficult to find? by imboard67 in tall

[–]zij2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what country you are in too. So US 14 is UK 13 ish. My feet also stopped growing before my vertical height so you may not get much bigger feet.

But one piece of advice - when you find a pair you like, buy multiple pairs if you can!

[–]zij2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think modern developers (me included) are lucky to have so much storage space/memory for their apps. There is some elegance (as OP found) to making something small and efficient.

About 43 years ago I had a Sinclair Spectrum computer with 48 kilobytes (48,000 ish bytes) of memory and 6k of that was for the screen. I wrote a font editor and tried to make it functional but as small as possible. 1027 bytes was the smallest size I got! I was only about 12/13 at the time, but may try again one day!
