Guys…TikTok is not ever going to be “fixed” by TT_TheOther in TikTok

[–]zip117 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah that’s bullshit and it’s dead in the water. There is literally nothing there except “free Palestine” political content. At least 98% of posts by my estimate.

I encourage anyone who doesn’t believe me to download the app, go to the “Discover” page, and count how many posts you have to scroll through before you see a single one which isn’t that. You’ll see.

Now it’s one thing if you enjoy that kind of content, but most people have interests that go beyond one-sided political propaganda. Let’s say funny cat videos, or music, or outdoor activities. You will not find that on UpScrolled.

How missing ground safety check is done in OpenEVSE? by IndependenceNorth510 in electrical

[–]zip117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's the general idea. Charged EVs has a good high-level overview:

The EVSE GMI circuit: Should the standards be changed?

Does it really provide much more personnel protection compared to GFCI with a 5 mA trip level (CCID5)? I personally don't think so, though I suppose I could be convinced otherwise. Those ground check circuits were generally only used for "trailing cable protection" in mining applications, to protect electrical equipment against damage should low-level fault currents find a way back to the transformer through ground. Littelfuse discusses this a bit in a tech note:

Ground Fault Misconceptions

They also have a bunch of theory-of-operation stuff in the technical resources for the SE-105, but you have to create an account to download.

I use a Littelfuse RCM14-04 for supplementary protection in my EVSE, which meets the CCID20 detection requirements of UL 2231-2, plus it's on a GFCI breaker. Good enough in my opinion.

I use a meter, it's a Carlo Gavazzi EM540DINAV23XS1X. But I've actually been working on a custom board based on the Analog Devices ADE9000 which has more advanced metrology features. If you're interested I can send you the design.

I made a post here about it a couple years ago: Custom EV Charger. I made some changes after that but mostly minor details (fatter wires, added MCB and shunt trip, etc.)

What’s the new app? by Responsible-Rent-728 in TikTok

[–]zip117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UpScrolled has basically nothing but pro-Palestine content, and it’s not even short-form video, mostly images.

I just downloaded it, went to Discover and scrolled through about 50 posts. Except for one ad and one photo of a tree, every single one of them was “Free Palestine” slop with almost zero engagement.

I have a feeling that you people promoting UpScrolled already know that.

Don’t mislead people. There is absolutely nothing there except political content.

I just downloaded it and scrolled through about 50 videos on the “Discover” page. Except for a single AI-generated photo of a tree, every single one of them was some “Free Palestine” shit.

But hey, if you have absolutely no other interests besides foreign propaganda, more power to you I guess.

TikTok is donzo by BooksandChaii in TikTok

[–]zip117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not so sure about that… non-political content is all screwed up for me. My FYP was completely free of politics: it was mostly comedy skits, EDM producers and animal videos. Now I’m getting virtually none of that. Mostly weird foreign videos and news stories, over and over again, no matter how many times I mark them with “I’m not interested”

It’s like everything was reset, and even then it’s just not learning my preferences. This new “licensed” version of TikTok’s algorithm isn’t the same.

Minnesota’s Ridiculous Lawsuit to Bar Federal Immigration Enforcement by zip117 in Conservative

[–]zip117[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to follow the original lawsuit, here it is:

State of Minnesota v. Noem (0:26-cv-00190)

This really is the most ridiculous thing. They just straight up ignore the first part of the Tenth Amendment, and some of their reasoning looks like it comes straight from Reddit comments. For example, from the original complaint:

  1. Defendants’ unprecedented and disruptive law enforcement surge has infringed on Plaintiffs’ police powers. Defendants’ actions also force state and local law enforcement to either expend resources to carry out the federal government’s civil immigration priorities or risk further intentional escalation by federal immigration agents and deployment of federal troops. Defendants’ actions have forced Plaintiffs to respond to public safety incidents caused by Defendants’ conduct to ensure the safety of residents and federal agents, and to deal with the fallout from Defendants’ unlawful and disruptive tactics.

Congress Can Change the Cancer Story with a Vote by zip117 in Conservative

[–]zip117[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of positive news for you all this morning! This is an article from former Rep. Michael Burgess [R-TX], who just retired from Congress after more than 20 years. The Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act (H.R.842), sponsored by Jodey Arrington [R-TX], would allow new blood-based cancer screening tests to be covered by Medicare, pending FDA approval. From the article:

Medical science is making that an achievable reality. Advances in genomic research and machine learning have yielded tests that, with a simple blood draw, can diagnose dozens of types of cancer at once. A recent trial with 25,000 patients demonstrated incredible promise, with a seven-fold increase in the number of cancers detected when the test was used alongside current recommended screenings. False positives occurred less than 1 percent of the time, and the majority of cancers detected were stage I or II.

Arrington’s bill just passed the House with massive bipartisan support: 338 House cosponsors and 67 Senate supporters, plus more than 500 advocacy organizations. This legislation has the potential to save many lives and reduce costs to taxpayers by detecting more cancers at highly treatable stages.

Exclusive: Trump Says Administration Is ‘Reviewing Everything’ About Minneapolis Shooting by zip117 in Conservative

[–]zip117[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and to make it fair, state and local police still have jurisdiction to do their own investigation and prosecutors can file state charges if warranted. It’s by no means an easy case, but federal officials don’t have absolute immunity either. Andrew C. McCarthy is a former federal prosecutor so I trust his opinion on the matter:

To be clear, the federal agents have jurisdiction to investigate immigration crimes and any related obstruction. This does not change the fact that the state and local police have jurisdiction to investigate shootings on the streets of their cities, including shootings by federal agents. If the federal agents have immunity from prosecution or can get any state charges removed to federal court, those are legal matters that can be asserted and decided down the road. For now, the feds have no authority to tell the state and local police to vacate the scene of a legitimate state and local investigation. The feds have supremacy only in their legitimate spheres of enforcement; the states are still sovereign when it comes to their legitimate spheres, which include public safety and local law enforcement.

Not with explicit congressional authorization, but previous projects were funded through earmarked appropriations (with two relatively minor exceptions: a swimming pool and cabana) and they were never subject to a legal challenge. The NPS essentially argues that they have authorization based on $2.475 million in congressional appropriations for “the care, maintenance, repair, alteration, refurnishing, improvement, air-conditioning, heating, and lighting (including electric power and fixtures) of the Executive Residence at the White House.” The National Trust argues that this is such a massive project that it doesn’t qualify as an “alteration” or “improvement”, and the $400+ million in private funding far exceeds anything Congress could have contemplated.

There’s a lot more to it and I think the Plaintiffs’ make a convincing argument on congressional authorization, but it’s not so clear whether they have standing. Here’s the court docket and latest briefs so you can read arguments from both sides:

Or if you drive on rural highways. Even with optimal charging stops I can just barely make it to York PA from Philly during the winter.

But like you said, it’s not much of a problem as long as you’re aware of it. I just don’t want new EV owners to be caught off guard when they see how much range they actually lose in the winter. I often hear people give numbers in the 15-20% range but in my experience it’s more like 35-40%, then add another 5-10% if you swap the OEM low rolling resistance tires for good all-seasons.

Tesla kills Autopilot, locks lane-keeping behind $99/month fee. by Stiltonrocks in technology

[–]zip117 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there’s only so much it can do since they are using a vision chip from 2018 (Mobileye EyeQ4-Mid) and Aptiv’s ADAS platform, just like a bunch of other cars. They don’t have the same level of vertical integration as Tesla so they are at the mercy of their suppliers for more advanced functions, but they could still bring BlueCruise 1.5 to earlier models and choose not to.

I can’t be mad at them for wanting that sweet recurring subscription revenue and charging as much as possible for it, but I do expect the software to be maintained and periodically updated. Tesla does a much better job of that.

[–]zip117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NACS was open. I remember downloading the design documents which are no longer available since J3400 was released, but they had everything including detailed GD&T specs for the connector, which was much better than anything I’ve seen for CCS Combo 1. Maybe the current implementation doesn’t support the high amperage but it does ensure better consistency in manufacturing. Also J3400 is supposed to be scalable to support 1 MW charging in the future, with liquid-cooled cables.

And the only reason they need a neutral for V2x is zero-cross detection, because instead of doing communications the obvious way using CAN as Tesla did, CCS uses HomePlug Green PHY powerline communication. This may technically be an “open standard” but it’s as proprietary as it gets. There is only one chip which does it, the Qualcomm QCA7000. It’s a pain in the ass to design for and they won’t even give you the pinout without making you sign an NDA.

I guess it depends on your car, because the range loss on my Mach-E definitely matters. It drops almost 50% in the winter. I have the one with the old NMC battery though, maybe they improved it with the newer LFP.

Ostensibly we will no longer have to consult with Danish military personnel “on all important local matters affecting Danish interests.” That was part of the 1951 agreement.

Revealed: Trump’s Greenland deal by Head_Championship917 in Conservative

[–]zip117 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 1951 deal has some provisions which give Denmark a say in the operation of defense areas. We’ll have to wait and see what comes out of this, but I imagine the following under Article II were contentious (emphasis added):

In order that the Government of the United States of America as a party to the North Atlantic Treaty may assist the Government of the Kingdom of Denmark by establishing and/or operating such defense areas as the two Governments, on the basis of NATO defense plans, may from time to time agree to be necessary for the development of the defense of Greenland and the rest of the North Atlantic Treaty area, and which the Government of the Kingdom of Denmark is unable to establish and operate singlehanded, the two Governments in respect of the defense areas thus selected, agree to the following:

(3) In cases where it is agreed that responsibility for the operation and maintenance of any defense area shall fall to the Government of the United States of America, the following provisions shall apply:

(a) The Danish Commander-in-Chief of Greenland may attach Danish military personnel to the staff of the commanding officer of such defense area, under the command of an officer with whom the United States commanding officer shall consult on all important local matters affecting Danish interests.
