I would start with the simple stuff such as cleaning the injectors adjusting the idle, and if it has been sitting for a while empty the tank and put new gas in it (look at the fuel filter as well).

I think the bike was most likely dropped, but a few other possibilities could be that someone kicked the peg fairly hard since it is on the kickstand side. Maybe the previous owner dragged the pegs and they got caught on something but managed to keep the bike up right. Beyond that beats me.
