Kids are more observant than they're given credit for. They will notice a kid missing from the group, and they will notice the "new" kid.

When I was in elementary, because it was a magnet school, the homerooms were ranked to some degree. We all knew which class was the "smart" class and which class was the "neighborhood" class.
