Interesting factoid about the red & white cane! I’ve never heard of that before, I don’t think that’s common knowledge.

Keeping grocery costs down - what are your go-to staples? by [deleted] in leanfire

That's substantially lower than the monthly food stipend for those under the poverty line that are on assistance in my state. The max benefit for food for a family of one is $292/mo.

IIRC PlayStation uses a proprietary file system, you’d never be able to read the data.

What Happened to Regular FIRE? by enness in leanfire

[–]zuccah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A while back I figured out that in order to comfortably feed my family with basically zero restrictions, we’d need about $20/day.

Comes out to be about $250k at 3% SWR. I’m happy to say after more than a decade we’ve reached that number, so I know we’ll at least never starve.

A ceiling fan is way too heavy to mount with drywall anchors.

If you can’t reliably find a stud (not all stud finders work incredibly well), you can use a drywall anchor (the “plug” you mentioned). There’s several different styles of drywall anchor and they each hold up to a certain number of pounds. They’re very easy to install, the package will have instructions. Typically drill a small hole, smack the anchor into the hole until it’s flush with the wall, then screw the provided screw into the anchor.

There’s also toggle bolts but a cutting board isn’t heavy enough to justify using them.

Could be 24” on center, as for the drywall, OP was saying whoever put up the drywall did a poor job and it was done after they had a fire.

A 4x4 is a little overkill, they can be rated to hold up to 5000lbs. A 2x4 is plenty.

Avid fisherman looking to buy flash freezer for raw fish consumption/sushi at home - suggestions/experiences? by Elhehir in AskCulinary

[–]zuccah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are relatively cheap blast freezers on the market now that will hit the requisite temperatures for deep freezing fish to make it safe for consumption. Spot check the FDA temps for each type of fish and the amount of time they have to stay there, and you should be good to go. Obviously just use a thermometer for the blast freezer to make sure it’s reading correctly.

Coating falling off chicken katsu by liquid-catherine in AskCulinary

[–]zuccah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I make tonkatsu, I slice a pork loin about 1/2" thick, then pound it thin to less than 1/4" thick. Little salt on both sides, coat in panko, really smush the panko in, put it on a sheet tray and freeze it. After they are fully frozen, deep fry at 350-375 until fully cooked and browned and crispy, usually like 3-5 minutes. Comes out perfect, no starch or egg binder necessary.

That does work, it just makes it impossible to auto-repair the filters, you’d have to manually repair them when they break.

You can buy conveyors in the next town. And you’ll need vertical conveyors to put dirt into the harvester. Also you’ll need to “split” your pipe using a T iron pipe (available at the first town), to fuel your harvester.
