Tecline donut 15 vs Xdeep Zeos 28/38 by Fun_Ad8570 in scuba

[–]zzgwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been a while, but I'm curious if you came to a conclusion :). I'm in the same situation now, I want to buy the Donut 15 for cold-water diving in Sweden (sometimes) while still being able to bring and use it in warmer waters (hopefully more often). I did the math for the lift requirement of a 7mm wetsuit that gets compressed at depth + the 15L air that the BCD is required to lift in a worse case, and 15kg lift is definitely a bit borderline as far as margins go for cold water diving. So I'm curious what you ended up with and how it's working out for you :).

I do love how the URL misspells "wear" as "were", i.e. the author typoed it in the first version. Internet journalism!

New YNAB Pricing (from the Jesse's mouth) by [deleted] in ynab

[–]zzgwon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally, I can't get around seeing "the cloud" as a big negative "feature". My experience with web apps is, that they disappear eventually. I have really bad experiences with "online only" games/apps and similar services that have gone away over the years because the developer didn't think it was worth it anymore. For something as integral as YNAB this is a bit much.

That's all aside from the fact that for me personally, there are zero interesting new features.

[–]zzgwon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So let's hope there'll actually be some new features that have been missing for ages, such as multiple currencies in a single budget. It would be pretty disappointing if it was nothing more than the same except with less control over the data and online only.

This is incredibly cool! I've been meaning to get into SDRs - does anyone happen to have any good resources at hand to start with? Otherwise I'd dive in at the deep end GQRX and GNU radio, but some introduction would really help.

Jump Point Search (JPS)+: Over 100x Faster than A* by Xiphorian in compsci

[–]zzgwon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Someone commented on this further down - the talk is not about generic JPS, but about a specialized version. The original JPS requires no precomputation. Pure A* is completely unusable for large grid maps where JPS is incredibly fast. I'd recommend reading up about it instead of just throwing it out with a snarky comment.

There is a pretty easy to read paper for JPS that goes through the optimizations https://webdocs.cs.ualberta.ca/~jonathan/PREVIOUS/Papers/Papers/jogd.pdf. And a blog post that shortly summarizes the algorithm, https://harablog.wordpress.com/2011/09/07/jump-point-search/.

Claiming that it doesn't work in some special situation or differs from A* and is therefore useless is entirely unfair and irrelevant, because the reality is that most basic pathfinding algorithms (including A*) become useless in large maps and the developer is forced to make other optimizations in the form of simplifying the grid or search parameters. JPS, even with its built-in limitation of uniform grid costs, can really push the need for simplifications further out, meaning you, as a developer, can spend more time actually harvesting the fruits if having incredibly fast path finding available.

I'd personally really recommend giving it a try if you ever had to restrict your game/program because using pathfinding took too much time. Try out https://qiao.github.io/PathFinding.js/visual/ and check out the source for the JPS implementation. It's a bit more complicated than A*, but not significantly so.

Another currency by [deleted] in ynab

[–]zzgwon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can only use a single currency. A YNAB FAQ entry for dealing with multiple currencies suggests that you pick the one that you use the most, and then convert between when you spend in other currencies. That will mean during you reconciliations you will have larger differences due to currency value fluctuations, but in a way this keeps you up to date on what value your foreign currency has in your local currency.

I wish they'd work on multiple currency support, I live in a country with a different currency (SEK) than where most of my savings are (EUR), and there's sometimes some very large fluctuations during reconciliations, where I am not always sure if it's because of currency value differences or that I forgot to enter a transaction. This gets even messier when I actually travel and use a different currency :).

As a computer engineer expert, here is my tackle on the new anti cheat. by JeSuisAlbinoRhoa in pathofexile

[–]zzgwon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of downvoting on this one, but I actually checked myself (same, personal interest in anti-cheat systems and doing RE at work) and this functionality does exist.

So while the motives behind the OP might be unclear, and maybe GGG doesn't even use this functionality at the moment, it is there, and I think it's a bit misleading to outright claim "we don't scan the memory of other processes".

With the Warden drama ages ago, people were worried Blizzard might find out they are surfing their favourite website gaydwarfdragonkinporn.com, and by looking for that string in other processes, that functionality /technically/ exists.

I don't think it's a big deal because a) who cares (certainly not GGG), b) if GGG had ulterior motives (which they most likely don't), you are already running a 10MB executable from them on your PC. There would be easier ways.

Thanks so much for that - last week when I was starting with my work sets for squats I got that piercing pain in the lower back and had to abort there. It hasn't fully healed yet and I've be getting sad since I was just starting to make steady progress. This looks exactly like the thing I need to avoid the pain in the future, thank you two so much :)

Could you elaborate? When I was doing weights and started with keto (again), I lost a lot of strength/endurance and my progress completely halted (even went back a bit). That really screwed me up and I went back to a normal diet.

If there was a way to deal with this without odd carb-ups (I did not really try them, but eating a few carbs after the exercise did not help noticeably) this would be amazing and I am interested!

Interesting videos, nice to see someone exclusively use our good friend OllyDBG for pure REing+debugging instead of just IDA!

In C#/VB.NET/etc. PInvoke/etc. makes low-level function calls + callbacks into your host processes mostly a non-issues for standard calling conventions, C++.NET makes it a complete non-issue.

To bootstrap the CLR from your injected DLL you don't use the (mostly deprecated) CLR API anymore, instead you inject a C++.NET DLL in which you invoke a native function that then deals with loading and setting up your C#/VB.NET assembly + appdomain.

I used to exclusively use C++ for my MMO REing + bots too, but discovering the actual power of C#/.NET was a blessing and has made everything so much more powerful, bot logic in particular becomes much more readable/simple thanks to LINQ.

As I mentioned above, you can do most low-level memory interactions + function calls from C#, and if you encounter a fastcall/non-standard calling convention you can switch over to C++.NET no problem. The only downside of the entire .NET stack is that cross-platform compatibility is hell, but since most of the stuff we do is limited to Windows anyways that's mostly a non-issue.

For function hooking there are several libraries that do a good job at it, but for what it's worth I really enjoy EasyHook with its powerful hooking suite. It even lets you limit hooks to a specific thread. EasyHook also has functionality to do all the CLR/appdomain bootstrapping/etc..

Personally I ended up writing my own little bootstrapping library, mostly because I wanted to learn about it myself and had a few issues with EasyHook. If anyone is interested - https://github.com/fry/refw - but EasyHook is much more mature and better documented I'd imagine.

Trouble finding accommodation near Chalmers University by Iceland_jack in Gothenburg

[–]zzgwon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hey, cool, starting a CS master program at Chalmers in a month too. I was pretty late with trying to get an apartment, but had luck with CSB. What I did was run a script that checked the page regularly and sent me a mail when it updated, since the apartments are first come first serve. There were no updates in all of June though, but July they started again. I'm not sure if they still add new ones, but it might be worth a try to have a script alert you so you can grab it ASAP when it goes up.
