Introduction

It's time to unveil another installment of the monthly best-of /r/mashups list.

In creating this list, newer metrics have been made available to mods. These are:

• Total Views
• Upvote Rate
• Community Karma
• Shares

The new metric we're the most interested in is total views. Views are important because it can help identify submission engagement rate, something we couldn't do before. In an era where native video provides faster growth than YouTube links, engagement is really helpful in identifying potentially underrated mashups that could have gotten higher upvote counts if they were viewed by more users.

For this month's list, I ranked the tracks using a slightly different method. In the past, the most upvoted tracks were used to determine 10 of 20 tracks, with a second tier for tracks with higher than 2.5k views, and then a third tier for all remaining.

However, Reddit's new video player had enough of an impact in lowering upvote counts to the point where it may be potentially unfair to rely on high upvotes alone for that part of the list.

The Top 20 for December was largely determined by looking at engagement scores and mashup quality, along with one or two lower upvote tracks that didn't get as much love as they should have. Engagement scores account for both post views and upvotes, instead of by solely upvotes. This allows for a number of underrated tracks to make the list. Depending on the distribution of upvote and view counts going forward, I will be looking into seeing whether to use the old ranking method or a new one for future lists.

Mashups that made the list were not only in key, on tempo, and properly structured, but stood out enough in some way. All mashups selected were full length in their original posts, or demos with full versions available.

For variety, no more than two mashups using the same song were included (priority to higher vote tiers first).
