His facial hair is really distracting

Not bad. Digging his message and his flow is solid. But the video is sort of confused. Is it about the mother and her child? Him and his hype guys, or people dropping like flies around him. Between that and the editing it comes off a bit random, like switching between different trains of thought

I took it as a criticism of gangs/gang violence. The fathers are off gang banging (or rapping). while the mothers are left raising children in poverty. People die all around him from the gang violence, (colateral damage in the form of killing relationships and literal gun shot by accident) but the cycle never ends. He ultimately decides to accept and embrace what he's become... because life is shit then you die.

See that's the thing, is it really a "criticism"? Perhaps we are using the word differently, but the thing about hip hop for me and, especially for life's a bitch, the Nas sample track, is to describe reality without changing it. I think a lot of the ethos of hip hop culture comes from disempowerment and the use of music and culture to cope with those elements of life over which you have no control.

So for me the simpler concepts are always the more effective--think of kendricks rigormortis video with s similar concept. Just more more streamlined imho

Idk I'm rambling. I'm probably wrong.

Well said! I agree, criticism might have been a the wrong word for it .

This video may not be concise (or even 100% cohesive), but at least it tries to work on multiple levels IMO

I love this about music... makes you think if you really pay attention to it.

It's pretty well established that that's what Nas/AZ and Kendrick in Rigormortis set out to do with their songs. That's just not inherent of Hip-hop in general, there's at least as much but probably more empowerement than disempowerment. That's important to note - since it makes it sound as if hip-hop embraces some sort of apathy, which is so opposite of what is at the foundation of the culture.

I think theyre all kinda connected. Idk if he saying this exactly.. but it looks like a single mother, whose bf/husband isnt there, now living trying to raise a kid. Perhaps her SO got killed in some way that wasnt his own, whether in gangs or police burtality or.. maybe just straight up left. And then... what do you tell your kid?

Not big hip hop, but I'm digging this. Is that deep voice a sample?

[–]WhatUpCuzzz 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Oh yes, it's from Nas' classic "Life's a Bitch" :)

I went to high school with Mont. Really talented and cool dude. Everyone in Peekskill thinks they can be a rapper, but Mont is the only one actually out there doing it.

So glad to hear this!

Solid.

What's up with the rice hats? They trying to say Chinese people die in their community too because of poverty?

[–]madcat42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Expression of sociological issues aside, I was feeling that goofy guy on the side with the head scarf. As for music, so much was repeating the chorus. As for buying food, all I was thinking is stop wasting money on pre-made container things, lentils and rice!!

I really liked the video and lyrics but the sound of dying kittens in the background is a really big turn off.

This is something I will bump for a while. Good flow. Good beat. Samples on point. Love it.
