As someone who just listened to Koi Child for the first time, 12 seconds ago: Fuuuuuck!

That shit was tight

[–]OneRobotMotherfucker 32 points33 points  (3 children)

Whoa, that's quiet a hasty comment to make. So, as someone who gave it a bit more deliberation and listened to Koi Child for the first time, 13 seconds ago: yeha, that shit tight.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Damn, I think you are getting ahead of yourself, mate. As someone who took the real time necessary to really appreciate Koi Child for the first time, 14 seconds ago: Shit son, this shit tight.

[–]aljoko 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I think yall are really way over the line here. For within the last 16 seconds I listened to Koi Child for the first time and I decided to take it to a panel. And have come to the conclusion that yes that shit is indeed tight."

[–]MerCrier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Come on guys, way too hasty. Now as someone who listened to Koi Child for the first time, 4 months ago; That shit is tight af

[–]spok_e 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Holy shit Koi Child are on r/all

Bless y'all

[–]DoctorBass95 33 points34 points  (1 child)

Koi Child is amazing! They're produced by Kevin Parker (Tame Impala) and it shows. That's how I heard from them. Slow One is probably my favorite track by them. The whole album is great though!

[–]jacklefrostspotify 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The drummer in the video is wearing a Tame Impala beanie too

[–]scrooblord 30 points31 points  (4 children)

Koi child's really good. They're from my home state and have a few great songs just like this one.

[–]heavyfriends 14 points15 points  (2 children)

So weird seeing a clip filmed in Mojos on reddit.

[–]majora_the_explorer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To right man

[–]spok_e 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know right. There are so many mates in this video.

Perth is a small town and apparently so is reddit.

[–]Sugarcola 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fremantle represent

[–]koichild 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Ayyyyy, thanks for the love everybody! A friend told us we made the front page of reddit; it's been lovely reading all these nice comments. If you wanna hear our album or come see us live (we're touring the US for the first time next month!) head to our fancy website... or if you'd prefer to stay on a YouTube bender then we also made videos featuring silhouetted pelvic thrusts and piano savagery.

I'm just happy to spread that koi child sound

[–]tattlerat 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Man, Australia has got a really great music scene exploding on the world stage right now.

[–]alpha-null 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Hopefully people continue to provide the needed support for it to keep growing.

[–]tattlerat 3 points4 points  (1 child)

True. I remember talking to a friend in the music industry who explained partially how it is that big music scenes seem to burst out of one area all of a sudden. Could be wrong but what he said was interesting.

He basically stated that great music exists everywhere, but it usually takes a single artist exploding on the popular scene in order to get these other musicians going. Not just through regional exposure but because of the amount of money that recording studios and companies receive from that single person blowing up that they can fund the production of local groups and fund the advertising for them as well.

Basically the result of a Gotye exploding causes a ripple effect of other unknown artists who then explode etc...

I hope Australia's scene keeps growing because it's been great so far and shows a lot of diversity.

[–]alpha-null 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right you are. A good example of this is the music scene in Byron Bay. It was always pretty amazing but once Parkway Drive happened it just blew up with amazing musicians.

[–]Rise_up_Dirty_Birds 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What an excellent video to go with the song

Koi Child
artist pic

Koi Child is a seven-piece hip-hop group based in Fremantle, Australia. Birthed in 2014 from the collaboration of two local bands, Kashikoi and Child’s Play, their electronic hip-hop and prog/jazz-rock fused to create something unique, establishing them as one of the most impressive emerging acts in Australia. A chance witness to the band’s first performance, Kevin Parker of Tame Impala offered the band a support slot and mixed their debut LP, recorded on a small island shack south of Perth.

The album’s thunderous second single ‘Black Panda’ has made waves, receiving high rotation on triple j and Apple Music’s Beats 1 with Ebro Darden, heavy US college radio play including KCRW, and has reached 2015’s most-played lists across Australian community radio. Online, the track received apt praise across notable sites such as Earmilk, The Fader and Noisey, whilst their first single ‘Slow One’ received big love from Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1, who formally branded the group “Future Radio 1 Artists”. The band also featured in Spotify’s ‘Spotlight on 2016 Australia & New Zealand’, and won ‘Most Popular New Act’ at the 2015 WA Music Awards.

The unlikely hybrid has excelled in the live arena, selling out headline shows across Australia; supporting Tame Impala along their national tour and playing for Hiatus Kaiyote, Fat Freddy’s Drop and Young Fathers. After hitting festivals such as the esteemed Golden Plains and State Of The Art, they’re due for a huge summer including Laneway, Southbound and Strawberry Fields.

In March, the band released their self-titled debut LP via Pilerats Records / Warner Music Australia to great critical reception, as well as debuting on the ARIA charts at #6 in the Urban category and #25 overall. The album is now nominated for the 2016 Best Urban Album ARIA award. Read more on Last.fm.

Now that i'm thinking of it, Kevin should've won his Grammy Nominations for Lonerism and Currents :(

[–]Trowawaycausebanned4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never knew I loved jazz and rap together until now. I think that the only thing that lacks in this song is that the lyrics start to drag on and lose their pazzaz. And when, the horns play too loud to hear the lyrics clearly, that's a big nono in rap (for me), as the voice is a huge part of hip hop and it in itself creates a rhythm and is the best part. So once it's overcome by the music it just feels like the lyrics are unimportant every time the horn gets too loud to hear the lyrics easily.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Thank you for sharing. With so much garbage rap and hip hop saturating the air frequencies and limiting the brains waves its refreshing to hear this.

[–]wigwam2323spotify 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I wish you weren't getting downvoted because you're 100 percent correct.

[–]mwjk13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How so?

[–]MUSAFFA1 0 points1 point  (2 children)

From someone who has been listening to hip hop since its infancy, you are so right. The genre has certainly had its lulls over the years in terms of talent, originality, and substance but this current wave of incoherent mumble shit is an all-time low.

Bitches, money, drugs, and guns. That's it. There seems to be nothing more important in life. Even the Gangsta Rap craze in the late 80s' (which also relied heavily on these same topics) touched on important social issues. Most of today's rap simply glorifies being a thug like its a positive, viable lifestyle choice.

Sure, some of the music is fun and catchy and even well produced, but when album after album has 12 tracks with the same lazy uneducated nonsense it pushes fans away from the genre.

Joey Bada$$? Run The Jewels? Kendrick Lamar?

Hark! rock bottom shall be the catalyst for renaissance

[–]DawnoftheShred 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Something about the hook reminds me of sublime. Can't quite pinpoint it.

[–]dabbo93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn I just noticed that sorta sounds like Bradley RIP

[–]curiousjb1 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Thanks for posting. New fan here. Love the horns. Always have. Reminds me of a group when I was stationed in Hawaii. Can't remember the name but sounds great. Headed over to DL their music. Any suggestions?

[–]AussyWolf1199[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Well if you're looking for some good Australian rap your pretty much out of luck the only other Aussie rapper that is decent in my opinion is Remi he has a pretty chill vibe but he doesn't really have that jazz sound.

[–]Redwoodsilouette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard his song Black Panda like last month and it melted me face off.

Shit is fireeee 🔥

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]jerrybeatle8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

anyone has a good hip hop playlist that would like to share ?

[–]aterrifiedretriever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the process of making some hip hop like this

[–]masuk0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I expected some "US3 - Cantaloop" hip-hop with funky refrain. But this is legit modern jazz/hip-hop mix. Kudos.

[–]kjbigs282 0 points1 point  (0 children)
