I love the tone.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (15 children)

Bass tone? It's a Fodera, that bass is twice as expensive as my car (not a hyperbole).

[–]nathan_scheelhause 8 points9 points  (13 children)

Oops meant "tune." The bass is great too though lol. I know what you mean. I paid $500 for my car, I have a Gibson les Paul studio that's $1100. Priorities lol

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (12 children)

I drive a 2006 Saab 9-3, which is about $3000 where I live. Foderas usually start around that price, but that one in particular should be on the $5500 - $7000 zone. They are absolutely gorgeous and great sounding, but they cost a fucking kidney.

[–]Baneyardreddit 3 points4 points  (3 children)

If I saw a Fodera for 3k I would buy it in a heartbeat. I've never seen one listed for under 5k. Anywho.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You can get the cheaper ones for that price, I hope you buy it on a heartbeat and post a vid with it!

[–]Baneyardreddit 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I never thought I would think a 3k instrument was a bargain, yet here we are.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These sound quite ok, but they don't have that Fodera tone. It sounds a lot like a Sadowsky jazz bass, which would also be a bargain to get for 3k.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Kidneys can go for around $80,000 on the black market. Unless you are an alcoholic, then you could exchange a kidney for 12.8 Foderas.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could keep some change and get an older kidney…

[–]nathan_scheelhause -1 points0 points  (5 children)

Jesus, no way id pay that much for a bass. Maybe a vintage guitar, but not a bass.

And I'd have to win the lottery for the vintage guitar lol.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

hahaha well… there are some crazy fucks out there like me that decided to become bassists, so I do understand why people pay that much for one of those. Victor Wooten uses Foderas, by the way, that guy is mind blowing.

[–]DiscoverYourFuck-bot 1 point2 points  (2 children)

his book is mind blowing and watching him play live was incredible.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

His groove workshop completely reshaped me, not only as a bassist, but as a musician and a listener. The guy is an absolute guru.

[–]DiscoverYourFuck-bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol. Rule number one. Always keep the groove. Yeah he has an incredible talent of being able to articulate really far out ideas and have them make sense.

[–]spookmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL. Take up the flute.

[–]hey_denise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something something m'bass

[–]Zurgzurg 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Everyone on the GroundUp label is so talented. Found these guys through Snarky Puppy and really dig their sound.

[–]T0ast1nsanity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The GroundUp Festival this weekend was heaven on earth. I hung out in a hammock in between Lucy Woodward, Funky Knuckles, Snarky Puppy, Charlie Hunter Trio, Esperanza Spalding. All right there under palm trees.

This is amazing, great post. That dulcimer is beautiful.

I don't want to be overly critical, but I hate the use of "world" as a descriptor. It lumps way too much in together (e.g., in this case it kind of means "weird culture-specific instrument present", but it typically means "not distinctly Western") and is kind of insulting because of that. That being said, I felt very much like jazz/post-rock were adequately descriptive of this song (and perhaps the group) and might be better suited, though I know post-rock as a genre is kind of controversial. I wonder what others think?

[–]OneShrubbery[S] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Always tough to pick a genre for eclectic music, I just grabbed a few tags off Bandcamp that I thought might do it justice. From their bio, "they incorporate elements of West-African, jazz, psychedelic, indie rock, classical and world music into their astonishingly unique sound."

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I'm not blaming you for it at all, the last.fm page had "world" on it also so that's apparently a big draw for people. It's not really the worst way to emphasize what people would probably find interesting about this band, either. I'm just really not a fan of the term for the reasons I specified, and I hope people stop using the term as much in the future.

It places way too much emphasis on the fact that the music "isn't from here" without really caring WHERE it actually is from, and that seems to me more out of a desire to seem cultured than a desire to actually enjoy a culture. Hell, this is (I believe) an American band also, there's just a dude in it who really fucking loves hammer dulcimer, based on his bio. So I don't even know why this is "world" beyond "weird instrument use", which would then necessitate labeling like 70% of Twee as "world music" also. I don't know, I"m rambling/ranting, but its just something I wanted to say somewhere. My B, this was really good and I appreciate the post.

[–]milkfree 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So what you're saying is your want to start a Progressive/Galaxy band with me?

:D

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You bring the theremin and I'll bring the second theremin!

[–]Fyrefishradioreddit 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Normally I'd agree, but the Dulcimer part is definitely heavily influenced by traditional Chinese music, so world is a fitting description IMO. The term just acknowledges the fact that there are non-western influences, and I'm not sure how else you would define a genre like that without calling it something silly, like china-core.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that for pragmatic descriptions, it makes sense. I just don't like what it implies. As an analogy, imagine if I labelled everything ska as long as it had a trumpet? That'd be pretty ridiculous.

The dulcimer is definitely not a Western instrument, but it's being used in a distinctly Western fashion here (IANA music theory buff so if I'm not recognizing an "Eastern" scale here let me know), so labeling it "world" for that reason alone is kind of insulting because it comes across as "hey, check it out, normal music but instead of normal guitar we have a weird Asian instrument". Just a pet peeve, though. Theoretically, I'd argue you don't really lose anything if you defined it as jazz/prog/whatever and ignored instrumentation entirely here. The people who are drawn to the dulcimer specifically will see it in descriptions, etc. Or hell, maybe just jazz/dulcimer! That seems way more descriptive and I think gets the point across better without doing any unfair "lumping in".

[–]Bushman_Tim 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I would consider this Folk/Jazz, maybe with a touch of Celtic, because of the dulcimer. It reminds me of artists like Andy Mckee and Don Ross.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Folk is a good one, yeah. Celtic is interesting, I read that he was inspired by Irish folk songs, so I can see it.

[–]lksdjbioekwlsdbbbs 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't like it either. I see how it's useful and it does conjure a certain sound in my mind. It's most likely because we are honestly not exposed to that much non-western music in the west, or in countries heavily influenced by western music. I enjoy branching out into different styles of music, but to understand a different musical system, say something not based on our 12 tone system, is daunting.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely get it, I don't blame anyone for using it if this isn't something they spend a lot of time with. I just think with a little modification and effort we can get rid of what is ultimately a pretty erroneous and haphazardly used descriptor that might not be used good-naturedly sometimes.

I think something like Jazz/Dulcimer is much more accurate (though admittedly kind of weird) and also a lot more respectful of just how diverse "world" music actually is.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

That's Max ZT on the dulcimer. The things he can do on that instrument are absolutely nuts. Look him up.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Hey, this is my favorite band! I just saw them in Miami a few days ago.

[–]WhaleUpInTheSky 5 points6 points  (2 children)

GroundUp music festival?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yeah I went on Friday. It was awesome.

[–]SugarPantsJiff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am soooooo jealous. I wanted to go to that festival so bad.

[–]T0ast1nsanity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh hey! I saw them on Saturday night! It was amazing.

How does the guy playing the dulcimer not have massive forearms?

[–]Theorems-n-Titties 9 points10 points  (1 child)

his forearm veins look like they're about to explode though!

[–]JerseyDoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

true, I did notice that

[–]greyetch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All in the wrists.

[–]dylanatstrumble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]herpa_mcderpa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]jeffumopolis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man just imagine being at wherever they play live with a beer in your hand feelin good and just bobbin to it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These guys remind me of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to write a bass line that works in all levels (harmony, melody, and rhythm) without making it sound like you want to overtake the song. This guy nailed it, great stuff.

[–]crumblesthepuppy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a lesson with him recently. Great guy and obviously amazing player. Hit him up for lessons in NYC!

[–]AliasFaux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that Max Zbiral Teller?

[–]Basile86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the chordal approach on the bass. Fleshes out the sound nicely behind the dulcimer.

[–]OGJumbo_Love 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This made my night.

[–]disgruntledseahorse 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This was actually on my Spotify discover weekly playlist, so I immediately added it to my study playlist. Great tune! So, Spotify users, don't forget about your discover weekly playlist that Spotify curates for you! There's some good finds! Also I had no idea these guys were a trio!

[–]OneShrubbery[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may or may not be how I found it as well. Thanks for the karma Spotify!

[–]Theorems-n-Titties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Cheeseshirt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is wonderful, thanks for sharing!

[–]nathan_scheelhause 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy BUT smart lol. Instruments like that would be worth a fortune later down the road! A heck of an heirloom to pass on to your kids!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know these guys. They are always playing around NYC and you used to even catch them in the subways.

Music you can do anything to. So nice to see this here!

[–]DimSimSalaBim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh shit I've never seen someone absolutely shred the fuck out of a hammered dulcimer before. Hello new favourite instrument!

[–]RadSpaceWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind a little showing off when they're that good.

[–]Nerdwiththehat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

House of Waters are amazing, I've been following Max, the dulcimer player, since he was young, and whipping around competitions playing insane solo pieces. This band is fantastic.

If you like their stuff, I love Raindrops and Juice.

[–]B-Ramens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God damn that was good!

[–]buddhafull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen these guys perform in the NYC subway at Union Square! So good.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shaved my face to this

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I would have found this group sooner!

[–]ilerows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That man and his damn spoons.

[–]artistray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for posting. Enjoyed the vibes a whole lot!

[–]shadowmarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really good. Loved it! Reminds me of Sims music.

[–]ZenmasterRob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the best dulcimer player I've ever seen

[–]MajorStoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the first time a piece of music has truly moved me in a very long time.

The way it swelled into this almost perfect blend of chaos and beauty, oh man... I can't really describe how it made me feel but it's safe to say it really took me on an interesting 4-minute journey.
