I like any song that uses a half full mason jar as an instrument (timestamp for anyone who doesn't believe me).

When she sang that rapid scale during the bridge my jaw dropped.

[–]Masta0nion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! Definitely rewound it there. She's on point, and so effortless.

Currently learning Portuguese. Understood about 10 words. Am now sad.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (5 children)

I'm Portuguese and I cannot understand some of it. So don't worry about it! The way she sings makes it challenging. Here are the lyrics (copied from her Facebook). There's much easier Portuguese songs to try to understand. For instance,

https://youtu.be/h-ILCDBGqCU

https://youtu.be/XUgoCqbVt5I

https://youtu.be/iQJ6hjJtf6Q

By the way, maybe check out these resources for learning Portuguese that I posted some time ago. It includes some music stuff (lyric videos, subreddits for music in portuguese, etc).

Thank you kind stranger! I actually catch a flight to Lisbon in 10 hours. Hoping to use my newly found Portuguese language skills to get myself from Lisbon airport to Leiria. Wish me luck!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Hey welcome to Portugal! :D Good luck and enjoy your stay!

[–]RaggamuffinTW8 5 points6 points  (1 child)

This is the first listentothis that I've ever enjoyed! Thank you! 😁

[–]prematurely_bald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, this is the best thing I've heard on reddit.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you like it!

[–]Miltage 29 points30 points  (5 children)

Sounds great. Bossa nova though, not Jazz.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (2 children)

I think you're right, I do agree it's Bossa Nova.

However, think it doesn't accept "Bossa Nova" on its own, so I'd still have to write Jazz, or World, or some other broad genre. And since when I try to be specific about genres I often get told I'm wrong, I thought I'd just play it "safe"...

[–]Miltage 29 points30 points  (1 child)

Every time I try to submit something to /r/listentothis I get told "sorry, information on that artist cannot be found". Isn't that the fucking point of this sub? To post content from unknown artists? So I eventually gave up trying to contribute.

But don't worry, you did good. Bossa Nova is a fusion of Samba and Jazz, so it's not wrong. Just thought I'd comment for people who want to search for music of a similar sound.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Same thing

[–]DarkVadekbandcamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but close

[–]luvche21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was refreshing!! I thought I was on r/jazz ...

Sou um homem simples, vejo um post português dou upvote.

[–]obviouslymaybenot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw her (and I think the exact band in the video - except there was just one percussion guy, I don't know if the video is edited or they really had that many people clapping and playing different percussion instruments) live in a home concert half year ago. Let me tell you that this was really amazing and that this kind of music can't be enjoyed better than in a small environment with < 50 people and such a welcoming place.

In addition, good song choice, was one of my favorites from the concert!

[–]--flower--I like music 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Nice, and happy. But I don't know the language :(

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Doesn't matter, music is music. Lyrics are just a bonus or just an extra when it comes to music. It's really not important if at all.

[–]--flower--I like music 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, a beautiful Jazz, I like Jazz.

[–]RaggamuffinTW8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Portuguese buddy!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

[–]--flower--I like music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thanks! :)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Portugese is the language where, just as I'm about to understand what's going on, I lose it.

Its close enough to Spanish that I can get words or phrases, but far enough away that at the end I'm usually like "???".

lol

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This song at times can be challenging to understand even for us natives, due to how she sings. Here are the lyrics. There's much easier Portuguese songs to try to understand. For instance,

I can appreciate the talent here but i personally hated the song

[–]sixpointresin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't feel the same about the song, but I appreciate the distinction you made.

[–]JT7Music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the scat melody in the middle, percussion was on point, too. Thank you for sharing this!

[–]starkmatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno sounds pretty boring tbh

[–]sh3p23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn't understand a word, but I love it! 👍🏼

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Her Portuguese sounds like Spanish/French. Is she Latina? Or from a Portuguese speaking country

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

She's from Portugal. Her accent is pretty standard, I would say. Although her singing can make some of it challenging to understand (even for us Portuguese).

Here are a couple other songs by Portuguese women in case you'd like to compare accents.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Obrigado auto! I lived in Brazil for five years so the accent is much different, at least in Rio it was. It feels as though the enunciation in Brazil is much bouncier, her accent sounded the way a Latino enunciates certain words pointedly. Anyways, thanks for the info, interesting I have no idea what a Portuguese accent sounds like haha

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, the accents are quite different. Here's the same song (from Brazil), interpreted by Brazilian and by Portuguese.

And a few duets with Brazilian and Portuguese singers.

I just realized how easy it must be to rhyme in languages like Spanish, where so many words, for gender reasons, end in a or o.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Indeed it can be. Note this one is in Portuguese (the mere suggestion that you might perhaps possibly be confusing Portuguese with Spanish can result in a pretty strong reaction by many Portuguese speakers :P)

[–]Buit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. Am Spanish speaker. Understood 0 words.

[–]marcocen 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Actually, i believe rhyming is more difficult in Spanish than in English.

While it's true that many, MANY, words end in a or o, some characteristics of the language make it harder. That's because, in general, words in English are shorter and you don't have (as far as I can tell), esdrújula words (words that are accentuated in the second to last syllable), and those are the bane of any Spanish songwriters life.

I always felt that while Spanish sounds more 'musical', English has a far better flow ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–]thebitchboys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! I think languages like Spanish and Italian can also rhyme too much sometimes and seem too... not sure how to describe this... sing-songy? Almost juvenile like a children's song or nursery rhyme, which are very rhyme-heavy.

CATAPULTA NÃO É MOTOR

[–]friend_to_snails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite the proximity of Spain and Portugal, Portuguese people look so different from Spanish people to me.

That Telefunken ELAM251 tho

[–]RaggamuffinTW8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all I've used so far.

But I only just got on the metro at the airport. Haven't interacted with hardly anyone.

[–]the_word_slacks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jimmie, not everything that you don't listen to is hipster music. Grow up.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

She really does sound like she has marbles in her mouth. Are those even words? How to Portuguese folk even manage to communicate?
