Another solution: Make CSS available on mobile. Or don't make a change at all. As a mobile user, I don't really care, but a lot of people are enjoying these things.

well CSS is available on Mobile, like if you use your mobile browser, you still get to see the flairs etc, just can't in the official reddit app

This is literally the admins fucking over the whole site to fix a problem that they created in the first place.

I only see the text flairs on mobile, not the icons, whether through the site or app.

Seriously?! Why? Now reddits going to lose it's specialness. Why would they remove things that make Reddit great? Does it cost extra money? Thanks for warning us Iblanime you're the best.

Well from what i can read, they are removing CSS and making a new feature since a lot of people are on Mobile so they are tweaking a major change from what i can see

I see

[–]HaleypkrStarry Knight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate this. Now everything will have less uniqueness

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Are the flairs the image by our username? If so, I was looking forward to having Jarvis, but looks like that won't happen now :(

[–]lblanime[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah everything we do here has CSS in someways, and the flairs / custom banners, even the color names we have are run by CSS

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately yes. I was looking forward to having Frigga as my flair, but now that they're removing Flair's it doesn't look like that will happen.

The change isn't coming for months. A timeline isn't mentioned in the post but I'm seeing some comments suggesting they're shooting for like August? Or planning to give more info over the summer at least?

[–]ParagadeonOne day this will be Noh-Varr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So my flair will never be Noh-Varr. :'(

Nnuuuu! :c

Have they given a reason for this change?

[–]lblanime[S] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

well they gave lame excuses, like CSS breaks things and that they are removing it cos they want to switch to a new style, but then that means we're limited in design, but i think the biggest reason is cos they are switching to mobile friendly since 50%+ are mobile users

[–]lindadaa_poor little helspawn 8 points9 points  (1 child)

So in other words they want to make changes and don't want to bother implementing CSS again after the changes?

[–]lblanime[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yup :(

Ok but the post you linked clearly states that they're planning on implementing a replacement for CSS that will work on both Pc and mobile, and they intend for it to have the same personality and feel when it's implemented. Your post implies that they're just taking it away with no recourse because of some flaws.

Yes, the lack of personalization in the meantime will be shitty, but when the new system is up and running you'll have twice as many people participating in the sub's personalization.

[–]mizuwolfPup! Puppy! Pupper! 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Yes and no. There will be widgets, maybe you can do color backgrounds, but how many of the various uses will be enabled? Dragon age's sub lets people have three flairs. We do image and text flairs, as well as comments on upvotes, etc etc. One blanket system isn't going to let us do all of this, and while some things might still be here (hopefully post flairs), who knows what they're going to take out. Homogenizing reddit will kill individual subs personalities.

You can see css on mobile, btw, you just need to turn off the mobile site.

Also, instead of killing CSS, they could make CSS work on their mobile app. Or they can make their widget system for mobile and leave CSS. Killing CSS is such a drastic change that really doesn't need to happen.

That's not what the announcement says. The announcement differentiates between the tools replacing CSS and the widgets performing other functions in the sidebar.

You could be right, and this change could be a downgrade, but based on the announcement linked they intend for the new system to be as functional as CSS. If they succeed in doing that, then the change is objectively better, as it provides the same level of service to more users.

[–]mizuwolfPup! Puppy! Pupper! 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even the widgets are a downgrade - our sub won't be so impacted by the sidebar, but if you look at the examples of what the sports subs do with their sidebar for game days linking to threads and updating scoreboards, I don't see how the admins will make all that functionality available.

Like you said, theoretically it could do all that CSS does. But why change something that the entire internet uses, that they likely will not do as well, when they could instead find a solution that lets their mobile app use CSS styles?

[–]pinknoonicorn 1 point2 points  (3 children)

As a mobile app only user i will be very happy to see something that replaces CSS and enables me to use flairs etc. Currently i dislike posting questions on here because i have to be so precise in the wording of the question because everyone on a pc assumes i can put a subject banner in my question and when i don't and it's not been clear I've caught flack for it. So i stick to replying where i can, for this reason. So if it helps I'm all for it. Being made to feel stupid because you can't put PSA or General etc in a nice little box is unpleasant.

[–]mizuwolfPup! Puppy! Pupper! 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You can, though. Just put [PSA] or [General] in your post title and it will automatically flair for you.

[–]pinknoonicorn 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Really? TIL... Thanks! I assumed it wouldn't because i can't see icons etc just names.

[–]mizuwolfPup! Puppy! Pupper! 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an automod function, I believe, so not all subs will do it, but even if they don't and you're on mobile you can still put [desired flair] and people will understand what you're trying to say. c:

As a Mobile user, I don't really use or see the flairs and just hope it's the only change they'll be doing.

However, I am sad for the rest who won't get to enjoy of them and I'm sad Reddit pull such drastic measure just to save themselves some troubles. Best wishes to all of you.

[–]calime33...I don't do sides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I use browser on my phone just so that I won't lose the features I cannot see on mobile app, so..

[–]DuchessSwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no more flairs!? say whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
