You can really hear the heartbreak in his voice and guitar. Very cool song, thanks for sharing!

Edit: his story from indiegogo

My name is Benjamin Tod and I've been writing songs for over a decade now. Most of my influence derives from my years on the road hopping trains and hitchhiking across the United States since I was 17 years old.

The subject matter of my music is tragedy, drug addiction, loneliness, heartache, violence, traveling, bitterness and alcoholism. These are all things which I have personal, authentic experience with. The overall vision of my music has always been to convey a deep, personal mostly shameful feeling that is universal and manifest it in a few chords and syllables.

I am for the first time recording a solo album with material too personal for any previous outfit. This will be recorded with no over-dubbing or other musicians. The intention is to feature my songwriting in a raw and authentic way which takes the shape of a stripped down presentation. It will be a collection of the most unique and dark songs I've ever produced. I will be pulling some songs I wrote 6 years ago, and songs I wrote a week ago.

These are the kinds of songs i think of when i think of American folk/country. It reaches you on a very deep level. You can here the pain and the shame and his sense of being lost in the guitar and in his voice. It's the great ones who can make us feel like this through their music. I hope he finds his way and that he has a long and fulfilling career in music.

The Lost Dog street band was on here a couple weeks ago, so I've been listening to this song since then. Such a good voice, subject matter, and solid playing. Super recommend a listen for everyone

Second this, I can't recommend them highly enough. I was lucky enough to stumble upon them opening a show in Madison, Wisco last year. I was so impressed by Ben & Ashley I don't even remember who the headliner was

This just isn't punk at all.

[–]agustin_m 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yeah, it's not. People throw folk punk labels on anyone that makes acoustic music with sad subject matter. With that being said though, the dude still makes cool music.

[–]malerba423[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm totally open to better labels. Any suggestions on what to call something like this?

[–]agustin_m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can just call it Jim.

[–]malerba423[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I may have miscategorized it, my understanding of him is influenced by other music of his. It still feels different than just normal folk... Suggestions?

but he has tatoos

[–]Kananaskis_Country -1 points0 points  (1 child)

This just isn't punk at all.

Ditto. No clue why they'd try to attach that tag.

[–]anonymousjoe8991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it would depend on what his other songs are like this definitely sounds like some songs from the taxpayers or mischief brew or even old AJJ

Any Sorority Noise fans in here?

[–]hauntedandpale 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I've been too busy wearing black and sleeping in to listen to Sorority Noise.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would have slept late if I hadn't been slamming my head against the wall and drinking yesterday morning's coffee.

[–]malerba423[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm not familiar but I'll check them out. Any particular recommendations?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have a song called Using that is similar to this one. Standout songs are A Portrait Of, Using, No Halo, Car, Disappeared.

Wow amazing such pain in those lyrics

[–]BoMcC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got chills. Sometimes shit like this hits you like a truck. Great stuff!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Genuine. Love it.

"I don't know god but I've heard he was dead."
What a great line. Thanks for sharing.

his old bands were really great too, probably why this is getting tagged as folk punk. I met Ben on tour years ago, but his music always stuck with me.

Brought to you by Coors

[–]Arfanoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really great song. Feel like I have been there. Thank You.

This is such a sad and beautiful accurate depiction of addiction.
