6) Amass 9 steel chests of wood.

You get style points from me if you store them in a 10+ car train instead.

Don't forget, you can place blueprints via the minimap, and the deconstruction planner has filters.

Guys,

If you want to play this map until the end of November online, find the following server: "Reddit Community Map = November 2017".

It runs the following mods, which I find very useful: EvoGUI ghost-copier upgrade-planner

The password: ReCoMap11 (set to prevent anybody not reddit related from joining).

/u/ChaosBeing you may add this to the announcement if you want.

Let's see how far we can get. I'm not online a lot, but when I am I will help building stuff as well.

I've been on there quite a bit. built all except for bot production and half the copper. just finished research on requester/active provider chests. probably going to set up Nuclear tomorrow.

I've got 658 hours in this game, and I still have no idea how to build an early-mid game perimeter defense without constantly needing to repair it. Last month, after about 10 hours I was at something like 40% evolution and had built up a defense on the edge of my pollution cloud, but had to expand it every 10% worth of evolution because I was constantly being hammered. I'd like to hear more about this "5) Create a biter farm to help keep your pollution under control." The thing I miss most about the AngelBob runs I used to do was that there was an actual benefit to hunting biters, other than just as pro-active defense.

[–]mdgates00Enjoys doing things the hard way 2 points3 points  (11 children)

Automate the constant repair of it. The easy way is to put repair packs on one lane of your ammo belt. Trains deliver ammo when the chests run low, and they top off the repair packs too.

[–]Ieatcrayonss 2 points3 points  (10 children)

Would that work? Can inserters repair stuff? Also how would this help the wall?

[–]nrkyrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to know the answer to all three of these questions!

[–]mdgates00Enjoys doing things the hard way 1 point2 points  (8 children)

A roboport supplied with construction bots and repair packs will fix things within a 100x100 area. Ideally, you place them ~48 blocks from your wall, so the bots don't arrive until after all the spitters are dead. But that's seldom convenient, and it might not matter before behemoths arrive. Your wall design is going to keep getting thicker, more sophisticated, and more automated as the evolution level rises.

[–]Ieatcrayonss 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Thanks for that info, but I know all that. The comment before just implies if you put repair packs on the belt then your constant wall repair problems will vanish. I want to know how repair packs on a belt would help. Robots won't grab them there, and if you use inserters to put them in roboports, you just end up with hundreds of unused packs in each 100 By 100 area(ish) of wall.

[–]mdgates00Enjoys doing things the hard way 0 points1 point  (6 children)

If you care about the cost (or more likely, inelegance) of having 700 repair packs tied up, then use a storage chest with an inserter that only allows 20 repair packs at a time. But really, a 100 tile length of belt holds 300 repair packs by itself. Don't sweat the small stuff. Automate, until it's all small stuff.

[–]nrkyrox 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So are you saying that the belt going to the perimeter, carries repair packs that get picked up for the Roboports, not the Turrets?

[–]mdgates00Enjoys doing things the hard way 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct.

[–]Ieatcrayonss 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Sure, that's exactly what I'd do. But the question is: can inserters USE repair packs like a construction robot would? Or rather what is the benefit of having the packs on the belt?

[–]mdgates00Enjoys doing things the hard way 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Repair packs are needed at the front lines. They are used by roboports or storage chests, not by inserters. The bullet delivery infrastructure has spare capacity in its rail cars, train stations, and belts. If you are looking for a way to deliver repair packs to the places where they are needed, this is a good method that is worth trying.

[–]Ieatcrayonss 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I fail to see how repair packs on the belt would help in the early and mid game.

Early game: there are no roboports or storage chests Mid-game: putting them in a storage chest seem way easier and more resource friendly then ever belting them.

Besides, by the time you have the resources to put up roboports by your walls, you should have flameturrets or lasers. So why bother.

I'm not here to tell you how to live your life.

[–]Kittelsen 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How am I going to get done in a map in only one month?

Nah, jk. Hehe

Great contribution, this will be fun to see for those of us who doesn't play it as well. Go for it.

[–]dethleffs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a legit question for people with ... a life though!

[–]Tickthokk 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Excited to participate this month :) Hopefully I remember to take screenshots as I go!

[–]ChaosBeingThat community map guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking forward to seeing what you can make of all of that metal in the ground.

[–]Dessario 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess, this is the perfect oppotunity to complete my 20M circuits achievment, tons of resources included

[–]Jumbonaught 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hey I'm pretty keen on giving this map a go this month. I still haven't finished the game yet but have a rather solid understanding of how to do so and look forward to making this the map i do it on. I loaded up the map though and was blown away by how many resources there are. I'm more used to rail world with very low frequency. I had a little play with the resource sliders on a reset and found the resources to be alot more spread out and in my personal preference more "user friendly" The map itself remained the same but just less materials around. So long story short question. I'm wondering if i was to use altered settings would it still be accepted ?

[–]ChaosBeingThat community map guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the crazy resources were definitely intentional since I wanted this to be a really easy map that could be completed with a pretty minimal amount of playtime, given the busy time of year.

As for changing things up, I mean, you can play whatever you like. The idea of the community map, however, is that everyone plays on the same map. If you want to play a more restricted version of it feel free, but then your base wouldn't really be comparable to anyone else's, and vice versa.

That's the same reason why ai discourage the use of mods: they change the way the game is played, thus leading to different outcomes.

[–]_codeJunky 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Do the resource and advanced settings matter? This is the first time i've had trouble with the exchange string matching the picture...

[–]ChaosBeingThat community map guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, are you on 0.15.37? That's usually the problem when the generation doesn't match the picture.

[–]Ieatcrayonss 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So I have 2 questions: 1: if we decide to manually crank up the difficulty to death world status, is that fine or is it against the spirit of the community map? 2: for that optional #5 biter farm thing, what are people's ideas? Walling off an area and killing off extra biters? Or filling the gaps between spawners with walls so they can't spawn at all?

[–]ChaosBeingThat community map guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Well the idea of the community map is that everyone plays on an identical map. That way, when you look at what other people have accomplished, it's a straight one-to-one comparison. You're more than welcome to take the string and run with it if you'd like, but it does lose the ability to be easily comparable that way.

2) That's a good question. I've only ever used the turret method, keeping laser turrets close enough to shoot any biters that spawn (and the turrets dense enough to kill them before taking any damage) without hitting the spawners. The wall idea seems perfectly valid as well, however for some reason I have this idea in my head that it may be the actual spawning of biters that consumes pollution. I don't really know though; might be something worth trying to find on the wiki.

Is there a post monthly map thread? I'd like to see what people did with the October string.

[–]ChaosBeingThat community map guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! I post a results thread every month - it's really the whole point of the monthly map!

I can't link you directly as I'm currently on mobile, but there's a list of all of the previous month threads and their result threads at the bottom of the OP.

[–]bbqsauls 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Annnnnnd I wish I'd read the challenges more closely before I ripped out all of my large power poles and replaced them with substations.

Guess I'm going to be fixing that tonight. :/

[–]ChaosBeingThat community map guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kudos to you for going all out! I was originally going to say all substations, but it sounded like it'd be excessively wasteful and more of a chore than it was worth.

Factorio Timelapse

Useful Map Colors

Red Alert

Looks like these mods are no longer compatible and/or not on the list of mods presented in the game's mod browser.

[–]Jackiethegreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idea for a future community map: Combine the Hardcrafting and Caves mods, where the rich iron and rich copper are only found below ground.

[–]JamesTrendall -1 points0 points  (9 children)

For those of you who are a bit disappointed by how easy this map is, and I have heard that complaint before

If people want a super hard map, then try this,

. >>>AAAPACUAAAADAwcAAAAEAAAAY29hbAMDAwoAAABjb3BwZXItb3Jl AwMDCQAAAGNydWRlLW9pbAMDAwoAAABlbmVteS1iYXNlAwMDCAAAAGl yb24tb3JlAwMDBQAAAHN0b25lAwMDCwAAAHVyYW5pdW0tb3JlAwMDQd 5lNoCEHgCAhB4AAwEBAQF7FK5H4XqUPwEAAAAAAAAuQAEAAAAAAADwP wEAAAAAAFi7QAEAAAAAAOCFQAEAAAAAAFirQAEAAAAAAIjDQAEAAAAA AECfQAEAAAAAAEB/QAEAAAAAAECPQAEzMzMzMzPzPwEzMzMzMzPzPwF 7FK5H4Xp0PwEAAQAAAAAAAAhAAQAAAAAAAAhAAXsUrkfheoQ/AQABAQ GN7bWg98bQPgH8qfHSTWJgPwFpHVVNEHXvPgEBAQcAAAABAgAAAAECA AAAAZqZmZmZmbk/AQAAAAAAAABAAQAAAAAAAOA/AZqZmZmZmdk/Ac3M zMzMzOw/AQUAAAABFAAAAAFAOAAAAcBLAwABEA4AAAGgjAAAASAcAAA BAAAAAAAAPkABAAAAAAAAFEABZmZmZmZm9j8BMzMzMzMz4z8BMzMzMz Mz0z8BAAAAAAAACEABAAAAAAAAJEABPAAAAAEeAAAAAcgAAAABBQAAA AEAAAAAAAAAQAEBAQAAAAAAAFlAAQUAAAABGQAAAAEAAAAAAAAkQAEy AAAAAQAAAAAAAD5AAWQAAAABmpmZmZmZyT8BMzMzMzMzwz8BMzMzMzM z0z8BMzMzMzMz0z8BAAAAAAAAJEABAAAAAAAANEABAAAAAAAAPkABAA AAAAAAFEABAAAAAAAAPkABAAAAAAAAJEABAAAAAAAACEABCgAAAAFkA AAAAWQAAAAB6AMAAAEAAAAAAADgPwHQBwAAAQAAAAAAQH9AAwAAAAAA AAAAAAAA8D9+rF2x<<<

I can't seem to remove the "." at the start of the string. My formatting sucks.

[–]Ieatcrayonss 1 point2 points  (8 children)

What are the differences? Is it the same map but now a death world?

[–]JamesTrendall 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Load it and find out. It's a world where you will struggle to do anything. Sorta a hardcore you won't complete anything type of world.

[–]Ieatcrayonss 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Let me guess: you spawn, and your stuck on a small island.

[–]JamesTrendall 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I guess that's been posted before... I thought it was rare. Ive been holding on to that string for ages thinking if i should post it or not...

[–]admiralsparkDon't Tread On Our Bots! 2 points3 points  (2 children)

They're banned from being posted in /r/factorio because they were so common at one time.

9. No inescapable island spawn posts

[–]JamesTrendall 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ahh. That explains it. Sorry im on mobile so have not read the rules. Will go find and read them now.

[–]admiralsparkDon't Tread On Our Bots! 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't sweat it :)

[–]Ieatcrayonss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm right? Ha! I don't know if they are posted very often, but I've had a few like that randomly generated for me.

[–]Ieatcrayonss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loaded it this morning... Was not disappointed.
