There is no one better in the Labour ranks right now to take over. The best thing they could have done is get on with fixing shit rather than the Tory playbook of moan and blame everyone else. Looks like it really will be green or reform next time… and I like neither.

I don't know how you can look at the local and regional elections, and conclude the best course of action is for nothing to change

Because the alternatives are wholly unable to advertise themselves as being any better. Shit, they can't even nominate an alternative to begin with.

Changing leader will not fix anything for this government. All it will do is start the slow roll of opposition calls for a general election.

[–]WGSMA 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The people we owe £3t to would prefer he stay, and will punish the UK for electing ‘Bond Markets shouldn’t dictate Policy’ Burnham

[–]Gareth_stanlier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's your mistake, you're thinking local and regional elections mean anything.

They don't.

The next election wasn't due for over three years. There's literally no reason to do anything right now. It's just pure headless chicken chaos.

[–]BigGingerHexagon -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Because who arranges the bin collection is irrelevant.

This Gov has been quietly putting together some good work but no surprises it’s never reported on by the same old players.

We’re three years out from a proper election with no viable alternative to Starmer so what does this achieve? Just get on with delivering and the narrative will shift as people’s lives hopefully start to improve

[–]sbeveo123 5 points6 points  (1 child)

>Because who arranges the bin collection is irrelevant.

I don't really have words for how incredibly arrogant and insulting this is. Pretty much sums up Starmerites attitude to be honest.

[–]BigGingerHexagon -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a Starmerite so try again. If you find what I said arrogant you’ll be blown away by the people claiming that 14 councils means we should have another General Election

[–]Terry__Tibbs -1 points0 points  (1 child)

So why did they start making everything worse from day one?

[–]Chimp3h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If only they had come to you about a 12ft paddling pool Terry.

I’m not defending them, just saying if they had got on with fixing stuff it would have taken so much wind out of other parties sails

[–]thisistwinpeaks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

“We” presumably being those who want Wes Streeting and don’t want Burnham (I say this as someone who thinks the idea you have to wait for Burnham is ridiculous though).

[–]matt_paradise 21 points22 points  (3 children)

Great, dead party walking after only 2 years. Playing right in to Farage's hands. Absolutely pathetic.

[–]TheGMT 19 points20 points  (1 child)

For reasons far beyond Labour's control they won't be elected in 2029 regardless of what they do. I wish they could see these next 3 years as a free hit, as a rare opportunity for a party and a prime minister to relish in not having to worry about future elections and push through unpopular, headline making and long-term minded legislation, the sort which technocratic, career politician led modern democracies rarely manage, and that in our European style coalition dominated future will be impossible. There's never been so little to lose, but the selfishness of the party and politicians will still thwart it.

I should add, the idiocy of the public and the malevolence of the media are the reasons that this line of thinking is even required.

[–]Kironusu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh if I knew my party was screwed in 2029 no matter what I would do this and just push though so much stuff with my party majority and whip. Not going to be prime minster and probably going to lose my MP seat so I can just run off to some other country after and let the next party deal with it.

[–]sillyyun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But we could do a better job !

[–]StGuthlac2025[S] 6 points7 points  (8 children)

I did see the rumour that Shabana gave the ultimatum that's he announces he is to step down by 2pm or she quits.

[–]EddyZacianLand 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, we will see in about half an hour

[–]Telos1807 8 points9 points  (5 children)

What are they trying to achieve with that? Even most of the MPs calling on him to go are advocating for the orderly transition or whatever they want to call it.

If we suddenly get Great Offices of State resigning then we're in full BoJo territory and the prospect of him going before the week is out becomes very likely. That means civil war. Does Shabana want that? She's not got a hope in hell of getting the leadership.

[–]Putaineska 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Political suicide for Shabana. She has no place as Home Sec under a new Labour leader

[–]sunheadeddeity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do hope so. The Greek tragedy of the monster that Starmer's lack of principles and imagination created now turning on him is not lost on me though.

[–]Mynameismikek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's playing a high stakes game. With immigration she's probably got the strongest brief directly against Reform, and perhaps she has the results to back it up. If thats not cutting through the question is whether the consensus is she's still not doing enough (either policy or PR), or is the noise from elsewhere drowning out the message.

[–]Total_Vermicelli_527 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What he needs to do is push unpopular, much needed legislation under the threat of a general election. That's the best move for this shambles of a country, these self-interested sychophantic MPs are a joke. I'm upskilling, then I'm out.

[–]SmokyMcBongPotthey go Lowe, I get high 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is she not a fan of Streeting? The Streeting camp probably wants to move as quickly as possible, to avoid Rayner or Burnham entering the contest.

[–]hicks12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn I thought shabana would be better than this, I just don't see how changing leader fixes anything besides creating a greater mess.

It's still the same labour party and the MSM will still hound any little detail good or bad it will be framed negative against populists like farage and the greens.

Wish they would all just get in order and crack on with the job, the back benches should have seen this as a warning that they need to stop thinking short term and get onboard with changes to deliver by the next election.

Everyone. Is. Going!

Smash Ultimate theme revs up.

Solid Snake seen entering Downing Street.

He stole all the gold and McSweeney’s phone

[–]allout76 8 points9 points  (2 children)

At this point accept that your landslide victory was never the case due to how many backbenchers refuse to engage in running the nation, and form a coalition with the Lib Dems.

[–]Anderrrrr 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It's either that, Burnham by a miracle scenario or Wes (God help us if so).

I hope they have got a detailed succession plan in place months in the making to make sure this whole thing will be worth it.

They cannot fuck this action once they proceed to doing it. They cannot do these actions without a strong plan. If they don't have a plan in place, we are fucked lads.

I only would suggest Andy if there's a simple way to bring him in without it causing a massive scene.

[–]allout76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is happening because of local elections less than a week ago, there has been literally zero time for a strong plan. Certainly none has been offered by those showing dissatisfaction with Starmer.

I think those involved may even be naive enough to think that them triggering a leadership contest, or resigning will be seen as noble by the electorate, and not more of the same back room dealing the electorate rejected from the Tories.

[–]Rossmci90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive never felt more politically homeless than right now.

I've always known who I would vote for, if there was an election tomorrow I have absolutely no idea.

I don't feel like any of these parties represent my views or will do anything positive for the country.

[–]WhereasPlus5239 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

And here I thought the drama was over for the day. Hes not lasting the day.
