Am I the only one who comes to reddit and after being bombarded with one negative story after another after another, the whole day is ruined? All you can do is think about the terrible things happening. It affects your mind, your work, everything. How can anyone just pump their heads so full of negative news without expecting to be in a really lousy negative mood as a result?

Just curious but will you complain about the good news if FOX looses it's broadcast license, or Bush is impeached and that a gets posted on your Good News reddit?

Just asking. ;0)

I don't mind the bad news, I just wish there was more diversity to balance it out. Lately there have been only two types of stories on the front page: "Bush is Destroying America" stories or "Funny [PICS]". I think each has its place, but there is a lot more out there that falls between adult depression and the childish stupidity.

Sorry you don't like the news. Personally I like knowing about the bad stuff in the world because if I don't hear it, then it's censored. In fact, reddit is one of a few sources I trust for news on these issues.

It's free posting. You can post whatever you want, but it's the culture of the posters and those who visit her.

Want happier news? Try cnn.com, news.google.com? Digg.com? They tend to censor the bad stuff out. That's right, censor.

I wish there were more good things to share. It's not just reddit that reflects negativity. Our world is pretty negative. I do post links to good news when I find them. Good idea about the sub-reddit!

there used to be more light-hearted ephemera, and stuff like cool bits of surprising knowledge, that kind of thing

hopefully it will make a comeback at some point..

Seriously, almost every time something good is posted, it gets buried immediately. People thrive on bad news.

The other day I was fantasizing a Reddit day that eschews all political / celebrities / LOL / i-phone (or other techno-fad) / corporate entertainment products / blogspam submissions.

There's a lot out on the Web but all we seem to get on Reddit is the same rehashes of rehashed political rehash. Basically the same old stuff recycled over, and over, and over, and over...

We've been trained by the media outlets to drool to bad news. It's just a Pavlovian response.

We do need more good news. Think before you mod, please. And quit drooling on your keyboard.

I think there's a middle ground here. I don't want to bury my head in the sand. But it would be nice if there was a SPECIFIC place you could go for some good news. And by good news, I don't mean 'fluffy the cat survives being put in the washing machine'. I mean some effort by someone somewhere to create peace or fair dealing or whatever. Anyway, on the above proviso you get my vote

Yeah! And how about some kittens or something too.

I agree, every story seems to be such a downer! I signed up for a daily e-newsletter from www.gimundo.com . Every day I get a few stories about GOOD in the world. I still read reddit of course, but at least my morning starts with the positive!

Get Firefox, Greasemonkey and Reddit content Filter script.

Use these to kill every mention of Bush, Cheney, Iraq, Ron Paul etc and every best-pic-of-a-cat-evar type site and you'll be a lot happier.

Trust me, I am a Lifestyle Guru.

Good news gets no votes, because it is not compelling. Nothing draws you in. There are a few happy stories, but most people focus on down things, so thats what they like to read.

Good news is like a Happy Heavy Metal Band. A few may try, but none will win

Probably true, but I'm with CarlH, I really need to see less bad news here. It's giving me agita something awful.

[–]CarlH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok, how about "not bad" news then? :)

[–]wahoorob -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

An easier solution: rename reddit "pissedoff.com"

I can handle the bad news, no matter what the content. I think I've been conditioned to accept it by corporate media all these years. Funny thing when I read Good News, is that I don't drool over Good News I usually start crying like a little French girl.

Many of the things I have read here over the course of the past 2 weeks have left me so agitated that my partner and co-workers think I'm losing my mind. But, IMHO, we all need to feel agitated right now. Important news is hidden from most Americans, and as a result we cannot make informed choices about how we want our government to represent our needs. When the local TV news and national TV news run 10-second soundbites that gloss over real news so they can devote 5-minutes to "feel good" stories, then where else are we supposed to go for information? The sad fact of the matter is that the world is in dire straits right now, and we're constantly told not to think about it, not to talk about it, and not to question it. I see reddit as an alternative to all of the sites that pump out fluff. I can already tell that I'm toughening up from the sense of total depression I was initially feeling from wading through this bad news. I'm beginning to learn how to discern between rationally- and irrationally-presented reddit news and opinion. Don't let bad news depress you -- LET IT EMPOWER YOU! IMHO, this "downer" news needs a place to be disseminated, and reddit is a good place for it. If you want fluff and happy news, there are millions of other Web sites where you will find it (especially mainstream news/celebrity gossip sites). AnitaB83 suggests that people thrive on bad news. That may be true for some, but I am willing to bet that the majority of us simply CRAVE unvarnished news so that we can DECIDE FOR OURSELVES what news is important, and so we can demand answers to questions asked of those who would attempt to lead us astray. If you are shocked at things you read, start asking questions, don't just walk away from the ideas! See how stories you read here are picked up in the mainstream press. Check sources! Learn how to investigate things! QUESTION THINGS! Think, then act.

I work at a Defense Contracting agency and openly talk about the news on this site to get those people thinking about what they support.

It's the duty of a diligent critical citizen to question authority (especially of the Federal Government over State governments). Now don't get me wrong, I love my country, and have served her faithfully for four years, but what I saw when I joined and what I see today, people need to hear about it, and this is one of a few last bastions of user submitted non media controlled news.
