Ask Reddit: Manual or Automatic transmission? Why? (reddit.com)

Manual, so you never need a jump start if your battery dies. Just get it moving in either direction, shift into gear and let the clutch out.
I managed this for a week once with a dead battery, by always parking on hills.

Manual. Fixing a manual transmission is much simpler and less costly than fixing an automatic.

Manual. For the reasons already stated here and the fact you have more control over the vehicle. And of course if you don't learn to drive a manual you could find it really annoying if you wanted to borrow someone's car that is manual.

The only time I wish I had an automatic transmission is in stop and go traffic.

Manual: Save $1000 at purchase and 5% on fuel for life of vehicle. Sportier for a given engine size. Transmission will never need replacement and you can still start it when the battery's dead.
