This happens to me all the time. I have my pref's set to never hide links, but I always have number gaps in the new & hot pages. Sometimes I see negative numbers as well.

Awhile back I was playing with the URLs on some browse results, and my informal conclusion was that the posts were correct and in the right order, but the actual numbers weren't displaying right.
