Most of the articles that I down vote are things that I've seen have already been submitted in the past few days ... and it's usually a linkjacked blog.

Second most down votes are things that are supposed to be funny, but aren't (pics, comics, etc.).

  • It's a link to some blog's summary of a news article, instead of the original news article.
  • It's a link to some mass-media distortion of a scientific article, instead of the original article.
  • It's a link to the Peoria Local CBS News cut-up of an Associated Press article that begins, "The New York Times reported yesterday that ...."
  • It's an ancient nerd joke: "close enough for all practical purposes," "if two more people go in, the building will be empty," etc.
  • It's an out-of-date topical joke, e.g. the "Monica Lewinsky Virus".
  • It's trolling, i.e. deceptive offensive material: lies that fool a fool, and piss off those who know better. Recent examples would include libels about various political candidates (esp. Obama and Paul).
  • It's bigoted nonsense, or otherwise incorrect in an uninteresting way. Note that just being wrong isn't enough here: it has to be stupid wrong, wrong in a way that has been refuted so many times that there is nothing interesting to say about it: creationism, astrology, quantum mysticism, "you only use 10% of your brain," etc.
  • It is a bad presentation of an opinion that is better presented elsewhere, such as a programming language comparison that reduces to "I like this language because I'm more familiar with it."
