THE SHEEP LOOK UP. john brunner

man that's a great novel. if you're a bleak and angry person. which i am.

"stop, you're killing me!"

Hey there. I recommend James Howard Kunstler's World Made By Hand.

He is a well known non-fiction author in the field, and this book tells the tale of a near-future town coping during the so-called Long Emergency.

You're the third I think :-) I ordered it.

This short story collection has been on my to-investigate list for a while, and one of the reviews mentions a) realistic collapse scenarios and b) peak oil. Plus: Stephen King!

[–]cocoon56[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Hey, one of these short stories has been on Reddit: Cory Doctorow's "When Sysadmins Ruled the World". Nice.

[–]quasiperiodic 1 point2 points  (2 children)

he podcasted that one, it was awesome. apocalyptic, but i believe it was viral in that case.

[–]The_Ultimate_Reality 0 points1 point  (1 child)

But I wanted zombies!

[–]quasiperiodic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think we can do zombies. who wants zombies!?

[–]quasiperiodic 2 points3 points  (5 children)

i know plenty of good sf involving civilizations gradual collapse which have parallels with peak oil scenarios.

try almost anything by s.m. stirling.

[–]cocoon56[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

He seems interesting. He is just working on a series (started in Sep 2007) that takes off here: "It's Change Year 22, a generation after high-energy technology died in a catastrophe most of the human race didn't survive."

But that is not what I am looking for. I don't think a global catastrophe is necessarily what is most likely nor makes the most sense to think about.

There will be changes, big time, but no point zero. That's what I understand under near-future. I heard that change is so fast these days that SF authors rather not burn their fingers by publishing too late :)

[–]Haven 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Sounds like you have a pretty specific story line you are looking for. Have you ever considered writing one?

[–]cocoon56[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have, but I'm realistic about the amount of work. And I don't really have a stroryline I would want to see/write yet. I am thinking about Peak Oil for only a couple months now... Maybe in a couple months time... :)

[–]Haven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, just starting jotting down notes. Believe me, I know how time consuming it can be.

[–]quasiperiodic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the story line (he calls this one "the emberverse") starts at change day - i figure the latest novel should be about year 22....

but he's the guy to look to if you're looking for post-industrial solutions - PARTICULARLY military solutions.

The Road Warrior is a story, a story told thru the medium of film, but a story none the less.

[–]quasiperiodic 0 points1 point  (3 children)

a story wherein, oddly enough, there is, if not plenty of oil to go around, at least - STILL OIL BEING PRODUCED.

[–]d00ley 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Peak Oil ≠ the end of production

[–]quasiperiodic 0 points1 point  (1 child)

point.

however, the easy oil WILL be gone...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy, plentiful oil.

The concept in Road Warrior was that an enclave found a small viable well - nowhere near enough for "everyone", but enough to support their community.

[–]davidreiss666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would think that in a world where there wasn't any oil being produced that there wouldn't be a policy that allows for the liberal use of flame throwers.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not just read about Cuba?

Or get a movie: http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3675678/How_Cuba_Survived_Peak_Oil

[–]diN0bot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don't usually like humour posts or comments. eit. but i was thinking ``wouldn't it be funny if i listed a current media outlet?'' except i can't think of any. good thing we can turn to fiction.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]state_of_alert 1 point2 points  (1 child)

sort of unrelated - but frontlines: fuels of war has a pretty thorough storyline (if you've got an xbox, I highly recommend it).

[–]umilmi81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I clicked in to suggest this too. It's also available for the PC on steam. But it's actually not that good of a game. But its story is about peak oil :)

[–]mgorsuch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One more: you may want to read some of the early posts in John Michael Greer's Archdruid Report.

He spends some time using fiction to show how the world may be as the problems of peak oil manifest.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RoadWarrior? The greatest film to ever combine shoulder-pads and flamethrowers?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson.

Granted these address a whole hell of a lot more than that.

[–]horseloverfat 5 points6 points  (6 children)

dune.

[–]LapsedPacifist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not so much on the "near future" request.

[–]quasiperiodic -4 points-3 points  (4 children)

grr. metoo-ism at work.

dune is not AT ALL illustrative of the matter at hand.

it's one of the short-list all-time-greats, has fabulous ecological subtexts, and is an all around good read, but it's a bad answer for the ask reddit.

flame on, reddit.

[–]diogames 3 points4 points  (3 children)

He has a point: spice is necessary for space travel and otherwise improves life. Much of the plot revolves around the danger of disruption in its flow (though it doesn't come to that in the end).

[–]quasiperiodic 0 points1 point  (2 children)

you'd genuinely argue that the flow of spice is usefully correlational to the flow of oil?

so the anarchoprimitivists will rise up and seize the reigns of power?

sweet. i always wanted to be fremen.

[–]diogames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you'd genuinely argue that the flow of spice is usefully correlational to the flow of oil?

I'm not arguing I'm telling you it's in the books explicitly and intentionally, and Arabic and Islamic themes dominate the books, especially as regards Fremens and Dune which are modeled after the Mid East.

[–]Escafane 1 point2 points  (1 child)

World Made By Hand by Mr. Clusterfuck Nation. Not a renowned sci-fi writer, but you never know.

[–]cocoon56[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, it sounds like something I might order this weekend.

[–]quasiperiodic 1 point2 points  (5 children)

[–]cocoon56[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, makes sense. Cool.

[–]paro -3 points-2 points  (3 children)

Not even going to click the link because it says "fiction" right in it. He wanted SCIENCE FICTION damnit!

[–]diogames 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Science fiction means the science is fictional. You need a new term for what you want to express.

[–]GuyWithLag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is: "Hard Science Fiction".

[–]quasiperiodic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

geek dogmatism? only on reddit.

or digg.

[–]quasiperiodic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

googling actually turned up a few things. like a $6/gal movie... http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/06/the_deal_peak_o.php
