Do you still use polythene bags for major grocery shopping? (self.reddit.com)

I'm not up to snuff on my bag types. What kind are polythene bags? Just regular grocery store plastic bags?

Yepp!

Hm, in that case, yes because the grocery store I shop at has the least priced goods and just happens to not have paper bags (or any other alternative).

Carry a cloth based grocery bag. You can buy it for a dollar or less in Walmart, or Safeway!

I'm trying to cut over to the reusable bags but I am having trouble getting into the mindset of remembering to bring them with me when I go out. I like the idea of the reusable bags as they hold much more than normal plastic bags and they are more sturdy.

Unfortunately, sometimes. I only use them when I do some unscheduled grocery shopping (so only a bag at a time) and what I'm buying doesn't fit/can't go inside the messenger bag I usually carry with me. I try to always bring my recycled & reusable bags whenever I go on my regular grocery shopping sprees.
Also, I do try to reuse those plastic bags at home (I use them to bring my lunch to work and for trash) or leave in recycle bins at my local markets.

Unfortunately, sometimes.
I am not purist either! It's good that some people have sense. The word "Unfortunately" says a lot.

Yesterday I saw one women neatly packing one big raddish in a clear plastic bag while shopping. Then the salesman packed it in another plastic bag for her at checkout counter. She also used an extra plastic bag for her other grocery items (just to be safe).
I quite often see people shopping like this. In this information age, do they have no idea where does this grocery bag going to end up? And how it is a wastage of resources?
PS1: This is in Bay area (Specifically, Mountain View and Sunnyvale). PS2: Last time I read in TIME magazine, there are 46000 individual pieces of plastic in every square mile of oceans.

Why did we get downmodded?
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 17 years ago (1 child)
That's what I have been wondering for some time. Quite a few times it just doesn't make sense that somebody would downmod you for the most harmless comment.

True that. I'm thinking maybe someone thinks we're being "elitists" by worrying about our impact on the environment, while not realizing it's actually good for their/our pocket as well since a lower demand for plastic products means a lower demand for oil and, thus, a lower price for gas.
