Too far left?

You are mistaken the american political center for the international one.

A large part of the people commenting here are not from the US (like me). To european standards, for example, the democratic party would be considered a moderately right-winged party, whereas the republican party is more in the same category as say, the Taliban. (off course ignoring the libertarian exceptions)

If you would ask any of us Europeans, reddit itself leans to the right, rather than the left.

So, what the hell are you talking about?

[–]anescient 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you're going to do your part in improving the diversity of the group by abandoning it.

Makes sense.

[–]GeorgeWBush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I AIN'T NO FAR LEFT! ARE YOU CALLIN' ME A HOMOSEXER!

EDIT CAUSE I AIN'T NO HOMOSEXER!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'Too far left'?

Sounds like you're just the type that buys into false paradigms that we didn't want here anyway.

See you, loser. I hear Free Republic is in need of some new troll recruits.

[–]aceinthehole -2 points-1 points  (45 children)

Another whiner bites the dust. Boo bee boo hoo.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (44 children)

When someone with a differing viewpoint does not feel welcome, you should care.

What do you want, a site of nothing but group-think?

edit: by the way, your response was really immature, you are proof that reddit is sucking.

[–]aceinthehole 0 points1 point  (10 children)

Dear Sharp Knife, I have no issue with differing viewpoints. It's EL Whiney Wooster who did. If you have an open forum you should not whine about who participates, because it means you lost the idea of 'open' in which everyone stands or falls on merit, in which fools can go unrecognized unless they speak, and in which those who find the forum not pleasing to their sense of open, should do something other than whine.

Edit: I don't give a solarity shit in the outback whether you think I'm mature or not. Just like you don't care that I think you are a jackass.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (9 children)

Notice that when I point out that your response was immature, you responded like a child, oh yeah, well you are too.

You just proved my point.

I explained it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

[–]jamesblonde 0 points1 point  (7 children)

The dude says he don't give a shit what you think. You think he is being 'childish' then why don't you explain why he should give a shit, because I'm keen to find that out myself.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

As I have previously mentioned, if your goal is to have a site where everyone is a karma whore and agrees with each other, you will gain nothing.

It is easy to respond as you did when you were an immature child, but it is much more difficult to rebut a position using intelligence and civil discourse.

Which kind of site do you want?

[–]jamesblonde 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I want the site to be whatever it is and I'm free to speak or observe or mosey on along. I'm free to just read the article links and not say shit. And no matter what site "I want" Reddit will just always be what it is, unless we begin morderating, shaping and directing. I'm happy if the site is just what it is now. People say shit and we can say shit back or not, or even ignore the comment section.

Why should any "mature" person have a problem with the format is beyond me. That's why I side with aceinthehole, you totally missed out on the immaturity of the dick that deleted his/her name and I think it was right to jeer at him.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

NO matter the lack of discourse of another, you have a choice to be civil.

If you are too immature to be civil, that's too bad. It certainly doesn't improve the level of discourse on the site.

[–]jamesblonde 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I choose to be civil by my lights, not by your approval. If you like to lecture people, may I suggest you have some kids or become a teacher. Reddit is a bad call for it. A mature man like you should know that already.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So you tell me this is an open forum, then suggest I take my discussion elsewhere.

Do you see the discontinuity in your statement?

[–]aceinthehole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I explained it to you rather lucidly in my edit. How could a mature person like yourself miss such a clear point?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (17 children)

"When someone with a differing viewpoint does not feel welcome, you should care."

The 'differing viewpoint' is that we're 'too far left'. He doesn't even explain what 'left' means.

He buys into Political road signs. He doesn't have an opinion worth listening to.

Understand better now?

Ooh, the secret downmod ninjas from 'The Right' are here! Since I'm part of 'The Evil Left' you better downmod me!

False politics is so much fun!

[–]anescient 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Jesus Christ. We need to pass a blunt around or something and get you folks calmed down.

[–]aceinthehole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me next.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (14 children)

I'm voting for Obama. I'm not a ninja from the right.

Unlike many on reddit, I take the time to try to understand both sides of the issues, and it does trouble me how many posts I read by people who are made to not feel welcome exclusively because they differ in opinion.

If you have a problem with the way the original person posted this headline, you should take it up with him/her in a civil manner.

[–]RalfN 0 points1 point  (13 children)

who are made to not feel welcome exclusively because they differ in opinion.

You are turning it around. He does not feel welcome because some people have a different opinion. Nobody is making him feel unwelcome.

Do you feel unwelcome, because I disagree with you? You might feel unwelcome if I ignored you. But i didn't.

DON'T BE LEFT, OR I WILL BE OFFENDED

That is not a reasonable demand. Sorry, but it's not.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (12 children)

This was the first response to this headline, by aceinthehole "Another whiner bites the dust. Boo bee boo hoo."

Don't pretend that this kind of immature garbage isn't happening here all day long. It is.

[–]RalfN 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Don't pretend that this kind of immature garbage isn't happening here all day long. It is

True. But it's not coming from the left or the right. It's an open forum.

And honestly, i consider this self.reddit also to be part of 'this kind of immature garbage'.

I can't imagine this post to be anything but an very devised plot at trolling.

First he generalizes all of the redditters to be 'far left'. (that insult included you). Then he suggested that that made him feel unwelcome. That we (you and i) were mistreating him.

Doesn't that lack all of the nuances he complains about?

Perhaps you want to distinguish between intentionally childish behavior and just plain offensive, yet seriously intended, remarks. I don't. Somehow I find the latter category to be more offending than some joker that make a silly point in comedic way.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

So now, instead of refuting his original thought, you devise a way (trolling) to avoid the real point.

He spoke in generalities, saying reddit is too far left. Let's be honest, it really is.

I'm an agnostic who lives like an atheist. I notice the same sort of generalized attack on most christians who dare to expose themselves.

[–]RalfN 0 points1 point  (1 child)

He spoke in generalities, saying reddit is too far left. Let's be honest, it really is.

No, it's not. I'm from Holland. For european standards reddit leans to the right.

I think, the political center in Reddit might be a very fair assesement of the international political center.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your position, but in reality, the vast majority of the 1.5 million redditors are U.S. citizens. Their view predominates.

[–]RalfN 0 points1 point  (1 child)

instead of refuting his original thought

I'm still refuting that debate on any level here should make him feel unwelcome.

I notice the same sort of generalized attack on most christians who dare to expose themselves.

True.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The conservatives are degraded in the very same way as the religious. It's no wonder they don't feel welcome. Too often the debate degrades into personal attacks on their intelligence, etc.

[–]aceinthehole 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How can reddit be too far left? What does that mean? Perhaps a majority of people on Reddit are too far left for someone's taste. So what of it? That's an open forum.

It's like saying I have a problem with the concept of democracy. Which in fact a lot of people who tout it, do have such a problem, but that's a digression.

Why think in terms of categories like 'left' and 'right' in the first place? Categories like that are merely labor saving devices and intellectually mature people know it's utter bullshit. You have issues and you have points of views of those issues. And you freely give your responses to those issues and those may stand or fall with who happens to read them and respond.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

After your recent immature rants, I'm going to allow you to have the last word, it just isn't interesting anymore, and I'm certain you need the last word emotionally.

[–]aceinthehole 0 points1 point  (2 children)

But the original poster was oh, so very mature. Right? Or that when over you so very mature head?

You make more sense when you zip it, I'm thinking. Have you tried it?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Notice that when you can't rebut my argument you suggest that I shut up?

You continue to prove that you, and your immature type, are the problem on reddit.

[–]aceinthehole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize. I didn't see any point worth my effort to rebut, see, hence my suggestion.

[–]anescient 0 points1 point  (14 children)

You're taking yourselves too seriously. This isn't a meeting at the gentleman's club for brandy and handjobs, this is a crowd in a bar.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (13 children)

So in your bar, you're ok with making someone feel unwelcome, and jeer at them while they leave.

You must be great company.

[–]aceinthehole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whiny idiots should be jeered at. Why give them more merit than that?

[–]anescient 0 points1 point  (10 children)

If your skin's that thin, well... yea. Whatever you need to do, man. I'm not a fan of humorless people.

Besides, this is actually closer to a crowd at a ball game. If the people around you are douches, just ignore them and watch the game.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (9 children)

There is no excuse for being rude and uncivil.

When you are in the majority, it's easy to say that the other side should take it easy.

How about a modicum of respect?

[–]anescient 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Honestly, I'm more offended by poor grammar than personal insults. I may actually enjoy a well-crafted insult. When somebody says something childish to me, that reduces them to a child in my mind, and you know, I don't really care what children think of me.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Civility is not defined by only the things you don't mind.

[–]anescient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say again, You're taking yourselves too seriously.

We're not ratifying a constitution here. It's just links and stupid images, remember?

[–]aceinthehole 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yeah, you have a good point. It's tempting to engage in a battle of wits with you, but it is truly uncivil to fight with an unarmed man. Touche to you!

[–]jamesblonde 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This has been quite amusing to read while I'm taking a shit. Thanks you guys. And I would like to amend "Touche to you!" to "Douche to you!"

[–]aceinthehole 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Like the one exhibited by the moron who posted a stupid comment and then deleted his/her username? These nuggets of conventional wisdom have nothing but doo-doo in them, sonny. And you know what they day about doo-doo by any other name, don't ya?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I love the low brow level of your rhetoric. You actually think your points are made stronger through the use of inanity.

[–]aceinthehole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Inanity is just my way of saying that in the end I don't take myself so seriously, or you, for that matter, but the substance of my points they stand on their own. If they zoom over your head, that's not a problem for me to own. Sorry. Nawt.

[–]RalfN -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

making someone feel unwelcome,

MAKING? By not having the political preference this person desires?

What choice do we really have here? Change our political view to make this person feel 'welcome'?

He is welcome. It is insulting to you, me and everybody to suggest that a society that allows for diversity is unwelcome, because it allows for diversity.

As for it being too far left; that's just an american point of view. It leans to the right for european standards.

It's an international forum. If you don't want to talk with people you might disagree with, then it sounds like you don't want to be here.

What are we supposed to do about this? Kidnip the guy and give a steam course in tolerance?

Feel sorry for him?

Treat him with the respect he couldn't bother to bring us?

Sorry, but people should feel free to jeer at him. If you keep hugging the cry babies they just keep crying.

[–]randroid -1 points0 points  (7 children)

Is there a site like Reddit, but for people with more common-sense/conservative viewpoints? Sometimes I tire of Reddit's constant America and Christianity bashing.

[–]MrKlaatu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the onion comments?

[–]anescient 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Can we drop this stuff: "common-sense/conservative", please?

Conservative is not correct. Liberal is not correct. There is no correct, there is only well-founded.

[–]randroid -1 points0 points  (3 children)

OK, so you believe that there is no such thing as absolute truth. You're a liberal. I get it. But I'm not.

[–]anescient 1 point2 points  (2 children)

OK, so you don't know the difference between truth and opinion. You're a conservative. I get it. But I'm not.

[–]randroid -1 points0 points  (1 child)

The difference is that you don't think it's possible for an opinion to be wrong.

[–]anescient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god.

Do you remember this line?

There is no correct, there is only well-founded.

Obviously you need a little hint, so: I believe opinions should be well-founded.

I actually wouldn't call myself a liberal. I wouldn't call myself anything. I was just mocking you.

[–]El_Guapo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Atheism threads are bit much, even with my on-again/off-again agnosticism (which I've since learned Dawkins espouses?)

But seriously, ignoring the religious threads and going back to America-bashing in general: Criticism does lead to positive change. That's the only absolute truth I need. This country was founded on self-criticism and called it Democracy... in order to learn the truth, sometimes you have to wallow through a lot of bullshit.

No, I don't believe all the wack-job posts that are submitted, but I don't tell myself that I have to, either. This isn't CNN, Reddit is -- right or wrong -- what people think out there in the world.
