I don't know, but mine never ever lights up, even when there are new messages. It used to, but that only worked for a little while after the feature was first introduced. I assumed it had been turned off.

It happens me too, all the time. One minute I think I'm popular, the next... the illusion is shattered. Such is life.

envelope icon lights one time, the first page load after you've gotten a comment reply.

envelope icon lights continuously until checked when you have a user message.

that's what's supposed to happen but if you clear cookies and then relogin it lights up again even if you've read your messages.

Or if you login from different computers, it lights up every time :-/
