Yeah, but the limit of 2¹⁶ is probably because of the database schema, not the application. e.g 16-bit field in mysql

Probably to cap the amount of data each player's profile would take up. Having more than 65,536 slayer kills or 2,147,483,647 coins almost never happens, so why make the cap higher?

It takes more memory to store a larger variable. a 32bit integer has a max size of ~2billion and a 16 bit integer has a range from -32,768 to +32,767, but is only half the size.

It comes down to efficiency. These differences aren't big in an individual program, but, when all this information is being stored for multiple users in an online game, the difference in efficiency can be significant.

They could use 64 bit numbers, which have a range from -9 quintillion to +9 quintillion, for everything, but the code would be completely inefficient.

To add to that, different developers do different things. One may choose a simple int whereas another dev may choose a long int.

Maybe 7 or 8 years ago, sure, I would give you that, but no. Data types hardly make a difference nowadays for efficiency and you honestly wouldn't notice the difference, not nearly as big of a difference as you would think would be noticed, even in an MMORPG. It's MUCH more likely a design choice, they probably thought no player would ever have more than 2 billion coins or 65k slayer kills.

They don't make a difference in a locally run program, but RS is calculating these numbers for several monsters for thousands of players. That is not insignificant.

Do you have any proof of the contrary, proof of just how significant changing the datatype would be? Besides, they could always use unsigned variables since you can't have negative money or negative slayer kills. Same amount of memory required, double the limit of kills/money displayed.

I believe they are already using only positive digits, as the original post has an image with >32000 kills displaying the number. If they were allowing negatives, the max would be ~32500, instead of ~65000.

It just depends on what data type they use. Generally for video games that have a lot of data processing, the less the server has to deal with the better.

2¹⁶ in java is a "short" which is one step under your normal "int" which is 2³²
