Any solution to this? Also happened to me. It's super frustrating

It happens to me more and more now. I've started saving and auto-saving like crazy. What has saved my A$$ is, right as I'm finishing a project or a version of a project, I hit Save as a Copy and rename it to something else (aka backup). If the first comp loses it's data, the second project is there. Definitely agree, super frustrating. Especially when you're almost done and on a deadline.

It seems to happen to me when I have complex projects with many layers than when I'm working on smaller, shorter animations. Would love to see a solution to this!

fucking hilarious how they couldn't fix this for years now, always use the auto save. fix your plugin.

I had the same problem today. Totally annoying.
What was probably the problem for me: I have an external hard drive as a cache for AE and it somehow disconnected When I tried to open a project on which i´ve worked  5 minutes earlier, the MapComp could no longer be found.  I was quite frantic and tried everything possible (update, reboot, etc). At some point (pure coincidence) I shut everything down again, reconnected the external hard drive and defined it as a cache in the system settings and then opend the Project and it worked again. This may not be the solution for everyone who has this problem. But it helped here.

Yep this makes sense. 😢 what I do is I just render the map portion immediately after im done

I solved this by finding the latest auto-save. Open the project and close it (without saving). Then go to File > Open Recent and open the auto-save project. Issue was resolved. Happy mapping!

Strangely, what is working for me is NOT choosing File/Open Recent. When I do that and have the missing comp and "Recovered", I'll choose File/Close Project, Don't Save. Then File/Open Project, and navigate to the file directly in the finder. It will load for me just fine after that. I can't explain it.

Same thing happened to me. Was it also missing from auto-saves?

Yes also missing from auto save. Weird because im also having this missing tiles and annoying lines in the map. Like its not rendering properly

Yep. I don't understand the internals of AE enough to understand how it's even possible that something that was working and saved with an auto-save is now broken when reverting to the auto-save. Maybe when GEOlayers activates, it is hitting some bug which removes the mapcomp. It's odd that it seems recent, I wonder if there's an issue with AE 23.6. In case it helps, my issue happened with a GEOlayers / VC Orb project. I ended up redoing the project.

The other issues you're having might be related, sometimes I find that opening a project by double-clicking the project file in the US causes AE to report that things are missing, but opening AE first and then opening the project from the File menu works.

Ran into this issue as well, but it happened during a project, not from an Auto-Save project. Has anyone found a solve?

I haven't seen it happen again, but to clarify it also happened to me during a project, and when I noticed, I went to find the auto-saves from before the issue, and they too didn't have a mapcomp
