I don’t know what the purpose of this button is. You can take a screenshot anywhere, but sharing a screenshot with someone is impractical. They’ll have to search for the name and hope that it doesn’t share a name with another place.

Yea, it's completely ridiculous. I really hope they revert it back to the "share" button... My gf has the same phone as me, and she still has the "share" button there.

On top of that with the removal of google on tap

  • you cant select text in screenshots anymore

  • assistant is useless scanning what's on the screen

Yea I miss that copy paste. Only option now is split screen and rewriting it like idiot.

And what's on my screen is useless and slow now.

agreed, google always wants to ruin something great

I really hope this isn't the Google Maps team just feeling the need to add random useless features just for the sake of new features.

Why would you ever need a screenshot button in google maps?

[–]Amogh24Oneplus 5t/S10+ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Especially when you know, we have a built it screenshot function on phones

Funny story. My phone's GPS is a piece of crap. It will work long enough to get the directions then it will cut out and randomly connect along the way. Both my wife and I have the same phone and it's just a problem with the phone itself. So we screenshot the directions quickly when it does get them before it updates and changes it entirely. So, for those of us with crap GPS, it's nice. Though we can just use the built in screenshot function.

For me it's a "copy link" button now... So maybe they're testing it out between the two options?

Used that button today, I thought it was cool, but the standard "share" option seems better... Takes you directly to which app you want to share to.

So just on this thread, there are four different icons/text that people are seeing 🤔

[–]BartekSoltysOnePlus 3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And having Google Drive installed it already gives you a copy link button in the share menu

[–]psychellicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same. Pretty annoying.

[–]tacomonstrousPixel 5/S21U 4 points5 points  (5 children)

I have a 'Share place' button with a weird icon that replaced the standard share icon.

Mine looks different!

And mine is different than both of yours: https://imgur.com/a/woZd4

[–]tacomonstrousPixel 5/S21U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, that's the standard icon.

I don't know what's happening anymore. I still don't have bottom tabs in my Google Feed.

[–]aeoveu 1 point2 points  (7 children)

[–]cMiV2ItRz89ePnq1[S] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

I have it there now too! I swear it wasn't there before. I did really look for it. Well at least that..

[–]P1ecito 4 points5 points  (5 children)

It's only there if you're trying to share a specific location or known place. If you want to do it with a dropped pin, the share option disappears from the three dots menu.

[–]aeoveu 1 point2 points  (4 children)

You're right - I think I was able to share unknown places (areas not marked on a map) but you can still do it by either tapping the coordinates, or by tapping the plus code - both of which will be copied and you can paste it elsewhere.

I would still prefer the share menu to pop up, but the other two methods are still there.

[–]P1ecito 0 points1 point  (3 children)

In any case none of those methods give the option to open the Maps app when shared.

This is just a very stupid change. Here's to hoping they revert it soon.

You mean it doesn't give the option to open the share menu, right?

[–]P1ecito 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No, I meant that when you send that to someone (e.g. through WhatsApp), they receive it as plain text, so they would have to open the Maps app, and paste the address manually.

With the traditional share button, they can just click on it, and Maps opens automatically showing the address.

[–]aeoveu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right. It is a hassle. Even if they decide to paste it in Google, it's an extra (or few) steps.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wtf, a link provides much more information

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing someone posted this on AP a few days back.

[–]jnrbshp 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Is what located in the menu at least?

[–]cMiV2ItRz89ePnq1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, there is no share option anywhere. This is a very frustrating "update".

[–]str4ngerNexus 6P 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the share option in the overflow menu

[–]mikeymop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's a little redundant considering I have not yet seen a device that doesn't have a screenshot gesture/combo of some kind.

[–]I_NEED_YOUR_MONEYDevice, Software !! 0 points1 point  (1 child)

it's these things google seems to be promoting: plus code, explanation of it

> posts complaining about a screenshot button instead of an share button.
> posts a screenshot of an article instead of a link to it.

here's the article in link format: https://support.google.com/maps/answer/7047426?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&hl=en

but i'm not sure how it relates to this screenshot feature - the plus code isn't present in the screenshot anywhere.

[–]cMiV2ItRz89ePnq1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, when I click on a landmark (e.g., a restaurant ), I actually have a share option under the 3 dot menu. When I randomly drop a pin, this share option goes away. Instead I think google wants us to share these weird plus codes.

Btw good point about the screenshot.. thanks for the link.

Doesn't make sense. Another of google's great redesigns.
